Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947) Symphony No. 2 / Kullervo / Elegy 1. Kullervo, Symphonic Poem, Op. 15 14:13 Symphony No. 2, Op. 35 2. I. Allegro moderato – 13:23 LEEVI MADETOJA II. Andante 13:36 SYMPHONY NO. 2 III. Allegro non troppo – 9:39 KULLERVO IV. Andantino 4:53 ELEGY 3. Elegy, Op. 4/1 (First movement from the Symphonic Suite, Op. 4) 5:53 –2– Leevi Madetoja To be an orchestral composer in Finland as a contemporary of Sibelius and nevertheless create an independent composer profile was no mean feat, but Leevi Madetoja managed it. Though even he was not LEEVI MADETOJA completely immune to the influence of SYMPHONY NO. 2 his great colleague, he did find a voice for KULLERVO ELEGY himself where the elegiac nature of the landscape and folk songs of his native province of Ostrobothnia merged with a French elegance. Madetoja’s three symphonies did not follow the trail blazed by Sibelius, and another mark of his independence as a composer is that his principal works include two operas, Pohjalaisia (The Ostrobothnians, 1924) and Juha (1935), a genre that Sibelius never embraced. Madetoja emerged as a composer while still a student at the Helsinki Music Institute, when Robert Kajanus conducted his first orchestral work, elegy (1909) for strings, in January 1910. The work was favourably received and was given four further performances in Helsinki that spring. It is a melodically charming and harmonically nuanced miniature that betrays the influence of Tchaikovsky in its achingly tender tones. Later, Madetoja incorporated Elegia into his four-movement Sinfoninen sarja (Symphonic Suite, 1910), but even so it is better known as a separate number.

  • Scaramouche and the Commedia Dell'arte
Scaramouche Sibelius’s horror story Eija Kurki © Finnish National Opera and Ballet archives / Tenhovaara Scaramouche. Ballet in 3 scenes; libr. Paul [!] Knudsen; mus. Sibelius; ch. Emilie Walbom. Prod. 12 May 1922, Royal Dan. B., CopenhaGen. The b. tells of a demonic fiddler who seduces an aristocratic lady; afterwards she sees no alternative to killinG him, but she is so haunted by his melody that she dances herself to death. Sibelius composed this, his only b. score, in 1913. Later versions by Lemanis in Riga (1936), R. HiGhtower for de Cuevas B. (1951), and Irja Koskkinen [!] in Helsinki (1955). This is the description of Sibelius’s Scaramouche, Op. 71, in The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Ballet. Initially, however, Sibelius’s Scaramouche was not a ballet but a pantomime. It was completed in 1913, to a Danish text of the same name by Poul Knudsen, with the subtitle ‘Tragic Pantomime’. The title of the work refers to Italian theatre, to the commedia dell’arte Scaramuccia character. Although the title of the work is Scaramouche, its main character is the female dancing role Blondelaine. After Scaramouche was completed, it was then more or less forgotten until it was published five years later, whereupon plans for a performance were constantly being made until it was eventually premièred in 1922. Performances of Scaramouche have 1 attracted little attention, and also Sibelius’s music has remained unknown. It did not become more widely known until the 1990s, when the first full-length recording of this remarkable composition – lasting more than an hour – appeared. Previous research There is very little previous research on Sibelius’s Scaramouche.

  • Analysing the Brand-Building of Einojuhani Rautavaara from the 1950S to 2010S
How to Build a Brand for a Composer: Analysing the Brand-building of Einojuhani Rautavaara from the 1950s to 2010s Joel Valkila Bachelor’s Thesis Degree Programme in International Business… 2020 Abstract 20 May, 2020 Author(s) Joel Valkila Degree programme International Business Report/thesis title Number of pages How to Build a Brand for a Composer: Analysing the Brand-build- and attachment ing of Einojuhani Rautavaara from the 1950s to 2010s pages 95 The aim of this study was to analyse the brand building of Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928– 2016), one of the most successful names in Finnish music exports of the last decades. The purpose is to collect a resource on how composers, publishers, record companies and other affiliates can support the personal branding and promotion of music artists and com- posers. For this qualitative study, Rautavaara’s own writings were used as primary data and com- bined with secondary data from archival and documentary research. Interviews with indi- viduals from the music industry were also conducted. This information enables us to see in detail the marketing efforts on Rautavaara’s music that intensified since the 1990s, and how they affected the composer’s brand. The analysis of the composer’s brand also in- cludes, besides various branding theories, the composer’s sonic and visual branding. This study can be a helpful resource for artists, composers, recording companies and pub- lishers in enabling them to identify features that can be of benefit in marketing and brand- ing efforts. Key findings of this study suggest that building a brand for an artist, such as a composer, is a long-term process that requires time and effort.

  • Fundamental Techniques in Viola Spaces of Garth Knox. (2016) Directed by Dr
ÉRTZ, SIMON ISTVÁN, D.M.A. Beyond Extended Techniques: Fundamental Techniques in Viola Spaces of Garth Knox. (2016) Directed by Dr. Scott Rawls. 49 pp. Viola Spaces are often seen as interesting extra projects rather than valuable pedagogical tool that can be used to fill where other material falls short. These works can fill various gaps in the violist’s literature, both as pedagogical and performance works. Each of these works makes a valuable addition to the violist’s contemporary performance repertoire as a short, imaginative, and musically satisfying work and can be performed either individually or as part of a smaller set in a larger program (see Appendix A). They all also present interesting technical challenges that explore what are seen as extended techniques but can also be traced back to work on some of the fundamentals of viola technique. Etudes for viola are often limited to violin transcriptions mostly written in the eighteenth, nineteenth, or early twentieth centuries. Contemporary etudes written specifically for viola are valuable but are usually not as comprehensive or as suitable for performance etudes as are Viola Spaces. Few performance etudes cover the technical varieties that are presented in these works of Garth Knox. In this paper I will discuss the historical background of the viola and etudes written for viola. Many viola etudes written in the earlier history of the viola have not continued to be published; this study will also look at why some survived and others are no longer used. Compared to literature for the violin there are large gaps in the violists’ repertoire that Viola Spaces does much to fill; furthermore many violinists have asked for transcriptions of these works.

  • 103 CHAPTER V STRING SEXTET, OP. 47 in the Standard
CHAPTER V STRING SEXTET, OP. 47 In the standard instrumentation of two violins, two violas, and two cellos, only a half-dozen works for string sextet, all from the Romantic tradition, enjoy a place in the standard repertoire today. These are: the two sextets of Johannes Brahms, op. 18 in B f and op. 36 in G; Dvorak’s Sextet in A, op. 48; and the program works of the Romantic era, Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht, Tchaikowsky’s Souvenir di Florence, and Richard Strauss’s Prelude to Capriccio. The efforts by Vincent d’Indy and Joseph Joachim Raff, as well as a handful of their lesser-known contemporaries, have fallen into obscurity. In the post-Romantic era, contributions to the genre have come from Frank Bridge, Erich Korngold, Bohuslav Martinu˚, Darius Milhaud, Walter Piston, Quincy Porter, and Max Reger, along with a few dozen works from lesser-known composers.1 Part of the reason for this sparsity of repertoire can be attributed to the overwhelming popularity of the string quartet, which since Haydn’s time has been the accepted proving ground for composers of chamber music. Another factor, in the post- 1 Margaret K. Farish, String Music in Print, 2nd ed. (New York, R.R. Bowker & Co, 1973), 289–90; 1984 Supplement (Philadelphia: Musicdata, Inc., 1984), 99–101; 1998 Supplement (Philadelphia: Musicdata, Inc.), 101–4. This periodically updated catalog offers the most complete listing of string chamber music available in the last thirty years. 103 104 tonal era, is the exploration of new and atypical sound combinations, which has led to a great proliferation of untraditional mixed ensembles, including acoustic and electronic instruments.
