Collection Description

Biographical Note John Bratton was a South Carolina slave owner from the vicinity, probably, of Winnsboro, He entered the service of the Confederate States in April 1861 as a lieutenant in the 6th South Carolina Regiment. His first service was in the vicinity of Charleston. In July the regiment moved to Virginia but did.not arrive in time to participate in the Battle of Manassas. In the reorganization o f the regiment after passage of the Confederate conscript law, Bratton became colonel of the 6th South Carolina. He was in the Peninsular Campaign and apparently was wounded in the Seven Days Campaign. He was in the , and the Wilderness-Spottsylvania Campaign including Second Cold Harbor. In July 1864 he became a Brigadier-General was given a in Jenkin's Division, Longstreet's Corps.

Scope and Content Note Collection consists of a microfilm copy of the typescripts of approximately 168 letters written between February 1861 and March 1865 by John Bratton to his wife Bettie. The typescript consists of 148 pages, single spaced. The first few letters were written before the war. The remainder were written during his service in the Civil War and reveal much of the man and of the attitudes of an upper class Southerner of the period. Two letters dated April 24 and July 26, 1865 are misdated; they should be 1863. (Notes on the letters were made by Dr. Theodore DuBose Bratton; these notes were written in pencil on the original typescript.)
