Abstract Background: Traumatic experiences can have severe emotional and psychological consequences, which may affect the capacity to process both internal and external sensory information. Such aberrations may have cascading effects in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), where alterations in sensory processing may hinder the capacity for higher-order executive functions, including emotion regulation. Delineating the neural circuitry of subcortical and cortical structures thought to be central to sensory processing is therefore critical to the study of PTSD and may help to develop an understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this often debilitating disorder. Methods: Various neuroimaging approaches were employed to investigate sensory processing in PTSD, its dissociative subtype, and healthy controls. First, resting-state connectivity patterns of subcortical brainstem structures linked to interoceptive and exteroceptive sensory processing, including the periaqueductal gray and the vestibular nuclei, were examined (chapters 2 and 3). In addition, given that the insula is critical for relaying exteroceptive and interoceptive sensory information to other neurocognitive networks in the brain, resting-state whole brain seed-based connectivity patterns of different insula subregions were investigated (chapter 4). Furthermore, machine learning analyses were used to assess the utility of insula subregion resting-state connectivity patterns as a diagnostic predictor for classifying PTSD, its dissociative subtype, and healthy controls. Finally, a task- based paradigm using oculomotor stimuli with simultaneous traumatic autobiographical memory recall was employed to examine cortical brain structures involved in the convergence of exteroceptive and interoceptive sensory information (chapter 5). ii Results and Discussion: As compared to controls, widespread periaqueductal gray connectivity was observed with cortical structures associated with emotional reactivity and defensive responding in PTSD and its dissociative subtype at rest. In addition, as compared to controls, decreased vestibular nuclei connectivity with cortical structures essential to exteroceptive sensory processing and multisensory integration was observed in individuals with the PTSD dissociative subtype. Moreover, PTSD showed limited cortical insula subregion resting-state connectivity with frontal lobe structures involved in the central executive network, which may be associated with impairment of higher-order executive functions, including emotion regulation, in PTSD. Finally, exposure to simultaneous exteroceptive and interoceptive sensory stimuli through oculomotor eye movements performed simultaneous to traumatic memory recall engaged the dorsal attentional network and default-mode frontoparietal networks that have been demonstrated to work in tandem to facilitate connectivity with structures in the central executive network, including the dorsolateral and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, necessary for multisensory integration and emotion regulation. This effect was greater in individuals with PTSD and may provide a neurobiological account for how oculomotion may influence the frontoparietal cortical representation of traumatic memories. Overall, the findings of this dissertation reveal that individuals with PTSD experience aberrations in the neural circuitry necessary for processing both interoceptive and exteroceptive sensory information. We hypothesize that these observed alterations in interoceptive and exteroceptive neural processing may underlie, in part, the emotion dysregulation and maladaptive responses to chronic stress, including hypervigilance and dissociative symptoms, observed in PTSD and its dissociative subtype. iii Keywords post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociation, sensory processing, neuroimaging, brainstem, periaqueductal gray, vestibular system, insula, prefrontal cortex, frontoparietal network, multisensory integration, executive function, emotion regulation Summary for Lay Audience Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that is triggered by an individual experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, which may precipitate persistent flashbacks and severe anxiety, causing individuals to be fearful and hypervigilant of their surroundings. Approximately 14-30% of traumatized individuals may present with a dissociative subtype of PTSD, which is often associated with repeated trauma or childhood trauma. These patients may present with additional symptoms, including depersonalization and derealization, where they may feel as if the world or self is “dream-like” and not real and/or describe “out-of-body” experiences. This dissertation explores potential neural alterations that may signify how traumatized individuals with PTSD and its dissociative subtype experience sensations differently, whether they are from the outside world (i.e. touch, auditory, visual sensations) or from the internal body (i.e. emotions, visceral sensations). It is hypothesized that alterations in neural pathways important for the processing of these sensations may have cascading effects on the performance of higher- order cognitive functions, including emotion regulation. Dr. Andrew Nicholson supervised the machine learning neuroimaging analysis used in Chapter 4 and was consulted about the neuroscientific inferences made from experimental findings in Chapters 3 and 4. Dr. Mischa Tursich helped design the task-based paradigm used in Chapter 5. Dr. Jean Théberge oversaw the implementation of brain imaging acquisition methods used to collect neuroimaging data in Chapters 2-5. Dr. Margaret McKinnon was consulted about the neuroscientific inferences made from the experimental findings for Chapter 5 and helped revise the experimental manuscripts for Chapter 2-5.     Mind Blown Lesson 2: Anger, Murder, Adultery and Lust! [Reader: group leader] We’re in the second lesson of a series on the Sermon on the ​ ​ Mount (Matthew 5, 6 and 7). Jesus was the preacher of that sermon, and He said some pretty mind-blowing things. In the first study we read how Jesus said the whole Old Testament centered around Him. Imagine some preacher telling you that in this day and age. Your reaction might be something like that of the kids in this video whose parent hadn’t told them the identity of Darth Vader. Watch Mind=Blown Star Wars Video In this lesson, we’ll see what Jesus has to say about murder, anger, adultery and lust. Hint: It’s not just going to be mind-blowing; it’s going to be completely counter-cultural! But first, let’s be a little counter-cultural ourselves and open in prayer. [Leader prays.] Part 1: MURDER, HATRED, REVENGE AND ANGER [Reader: person with the longest hair)] ​ ​ Here’s what Jesus’ had to say about murder in the Sermon on the Mount: “You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder.     7 Deadly Sins: Lust In order to organize the way that we go through the 7 deadly sins, we will follow the pattern that Dante gave us in the Purgatory. In the poem, he is being led in a vision through purgatory and he sees it as a vast mountain, near the bottom are the worst sins and near the top the lesser sins. The penitents climb the mountain, leaving sins behind and eventually attaining heaven. We are actually going to go backwards, down the mountain, starting with the lesser sins and working our way to the more grave ones. The sin that, while still deadly, is considered the least, is Lust. Is Lust even a sin? (Obviously we know it is because it is one of the 7 deadly sins, but suspend belief with me for a moment.) It seems as though perhaps it is not a sin. After all, lust is not an action, it is not hurting anybody else, but it is a feeling. Typically, a sin is an action that we willfully carry out. We cannot be judged by what tempts us, after all, Our Lord was tempted in the desert for 40 days and we know that he never sinned. However, Our Lord also says this, “27 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery. 28 But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This is a part of the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus teaches us how to take the law, the rules and precepts of the moral life, and inscribe those rules on our hearts.

It is also intended to promote a consistent decision making process that can address unique site considerations and circumstances. Closing LUST sites that do not meet lookup cleanup concentrations may range from the use of formal risk assessment procedures with the imposition of institutional controls such as deed restrictions, to making a best professional judgment determination that a site does not pose an adverse health risk based on the evaluation of a conceptual site model developed from site-specific data. With this understanding, Region 10 recognizes that between a clean site closure and a comprehensive site-specific risk assessment there is a continuum of activities that could comprise a risk-based closure strategy. In general however, more robust and thorough scientific site evaluations are always preferred, and it is generally not appropriate to close a contaminated site that does not meet cleanup standards simply because it is “good enough” or because it is not practical to do more cleanup. Since few risk-based LUST site closures have been completed at EPA-lead sites, and many questions remain regarding technical implementation and policy decisions, this memo should be regarded as a “living” document, and reevaluated and updated regularly as additional policy decisions are made both regionally and nationally.

Horace § 1. The Noumenal Character of Lust and Unlust The feeling of Lust and Unlust occupies a prominent position in both Critique of Practical Reason and Critique of Judgment as well as in Kant’s lectures and writings on metaphysics and anthropology. But what is it that stands as Object of this idea? The idea of Lust und Unlust is central to both the practical and judicial Standpoints. But it is also one of the least well explained ideas in Kant’s writings. This is not only because Lust and Unlust taken together as disjunction in a single Object (Lust per se) is a noumenon but also because it belongs to the metaphysics of Kantian anthropology, which Kant left as a task for future generations to work out. We have described Lust as “a kind of motivated wanting.” Clearly this is not sufficient. The exposition of Lust and Unlust requires more detail than this, and this detail we must uncover carefully bit by bit. We must begin by clearly understanding the implications of dealing with an Object that is a pure noumenon. Kant remarks: Now one calls the capability to have Lust or Unlust during a representation feeling for this reason: because both contain the merely subjective in the relationship of our representation and contain absolutely no reference to an Object for the possible cognition of the same (not even the cognition of our state) .

Supposedly, a higher awareness of both positive and negative subtle stimuli and a deeper processing thereof are the central characteristics of the construct. These might be driven by differences in the allocation of attention. To further explore these ideas, an emotional variant of the Posner exogenous cueing task was conducted. Participants classified as high in sensory processing sensitivity as well as controls were presented with neutral, happy, angry, and sad faces for durations of 200 ms and 1000 ms. Cue validity, engagement, and disengagement effects were analyzed. This allowed for an examination of processing differences for the various emotional valences at early (200 ms, indicative of a possible lower threshold to subtle stimuli) and later stages of attention (1000 ms, indicative of a deeper elaboration of information).

TAt school, his Irish brogue and quick mind made him unpopular among school- mates. Then, at age 81/2, the boy experienced an intimate relationship with a 13-year-old boy that transformed his life. The two boys remained unpopular with other children, but they developed close bonds with each other. Most scholars (Alexander, 1990, 1995; Chapman, 1976; Havens, 1987) believe that the relationship between these boys—Harry Stack Sullivan and Clarence Bellinger—was at least in some ways homosexual, but others (Perry, 1982) believed that the two boys were never sexually intimate.
