From the “brain freeze” department: In last weekend’s bulletin, I wrote that Fr. John Fraser was the last priestly vocation to come from St. John’s. In fact, that distinction belongs to Fr. George La Grutta, who was ordained in 2010; he is the pastor of St. Anthony of Padua-St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Yulan (Sullivan County). Fr. George’s family is long established in the par- ish; he is a graduate of both St. John School and Burke Catholic. He worked for many years as a pharmacist, dur-

BIBLE BASICS 21: THE PROPHETS, PART I Fr. Peter Heasley The history of Israel and Judah recounts the actions of some prophets, and many of the prophets have their own books as well. We hear of Samuel, Nathan, Elijah, and Elisha only within the greater narrative, whereas Isaiah’s words and deeds are contained both in II Kings and in his own book. Jeremiah, though living through the events of II Kings, is not mentioned there, though the last chapter of his book is taken directly from the last chapter of II Kings. The prophecy of Ezekiel and many of the Twelve Prophets occurs during or after the exile to Babylon. The books of the prophets contain their words and narrate their PROPHETS actions, and yet, as books, they perform a prophetic action themselves. The Isaiah Obadiah Book of Isaiah, for instance, famously contains a great deal more than the Jeremiah Jonah words of the prophet Isaiah. From the , scholars have Lamentations Micah recognized a great difference between Isaiah 1–39 and 40–66. Now, Baruch Nahum scholars typically recognize three “Isaiah’s” in the one book: chapters 1–39, which recount the historical Isaiah of the 8th century BC; 40–55, which tell Ezekiel Habakkuk of the Suffering Servant; and 56–66, which tell of a new order in Zion. All Daniel Zephaniah together, these three sections do act as one book, and indeed, as a whole, Hosea Haggai the book anticipates the life of the Church, in Old Testament preparation, Joel Zechariah the life, death and resurrection of Christ Jesus, and the age of the Church. Amos Malachi Isaiah, in fact, has been called a “fifth gospel” for the many times it anticipates the birth, suffering, and glory of Christ. The Book of Jeremiah is more straightforwardly a collection of his words and actions. It is more or less chronological, though there is a great difference in the Greek and Hebrew versions of his book, in terms of chapter order. Jeremiah lives and works in the 7th and 6th centuries BC, immediately before the exile. We do not hear from him during the exile, unless the tradition is true that he is the author of Lamentations. The prophet Baruch is Jeremiah’s secretary and has his own book as well. The Book of Ezekiel is, perhaps, the most rigorously constructed as one book (as opposed to a collection of oracles). He prophesies during the exile, in Babylon itself. In Ezekiel, some new themes begin to emerge, especially the presence of God among the people, outside and without the temple. Ezekiel employs dramatic actions and apocalyptic imagery, which we will discuss in greater detail next time. Ezekiel’s book anticipates and perhaps brings about the importance of the Old Testament priesthood and the Priestly strain of theology found in Leviticus and other parts of the Pentateuch. In addition to these three Major Prophets, there are twelve Minor Prophets, each with their own book. They are not given in chronological order. They live in all periods of Israel’s history: the two kingdoms (Amos, Hosea, Micah, Zephaniah, Nahum); the exile itself (Habakkuk, Obadiah); and after the exile (Haggai, Zechariah, Joel, Malachi, and Jonah). What unites their individual prophecies is that their warnings point to a coming “Day of the Lord,” a moment of judgment and restoration. The Book of Daniel is unique among the prophets in being composed of apocalyptic scenes, didactic stories, and prophetic utterances. It falls outside the categories of Major and Minor Prophets.
