  • Land Under Pressure: the Value of Irish Land in a Period of Rapid Population Growth, 1730–1844*
Land under pressure: The value of Irish land in a period of rapid population growth, 1730–1844* land under pressure by Peter M. Solar and Luc Hens Abstract This paper uses information on almost 5000 leases to arrive at estimates for the trends in current land values in County Armagh from 1730 to 1844. The estimates control for the length of the lease, the holding size, and the quality of land in the townland where the property was located, the last relying on information from the General Valuation of Ireland. They show growth in nominal rents up to the early 1770s, a plateau in the 1770s, 1780s and 1790s, an increase to the early 1810s, followed by a fall to the early 1820s and another plateau thereafter, stretching until the famine of the late 1840s. Taken together with information on wage and price trends, the new estimates show little change in real rents and negative total factor productivity growth from the 1780s to the 1830s. The Irish economy in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was predominantly agricultural. In 1841, 53 per cent of the labour force worked on the land, and in the early eighteenth century the share was probably higher.1 The timing and direction of change in the intervening years are a matter of dispute, which is unlikely ever to be resolved fully in the absence of sufficiently reliable statistical information.2 Ireland was also experiencing one of the highest population growth rates in Europe: from the early 1750s until the 1820s upwards of 1.4 per cent per annum.3 The natural rate of population growth remained relatively high into the 1830s and early 1840s, with the actual rate slowing only with the beginnings of mass emigration.

  • Scat Daddy Stars at Craven Cont
THURSDAY, 19 APRIL, 2018 and the second time I loved him. He is still developing all the SCAT DADDY STARS time and he looks ready to go. This is probably the last sale where you can get them to [Royal] Ascot so I don't think he'll be AT CRAVEN waiting around too long." Hillen was acting for an existing client, who wished to remain anonymous, but was able to confirm that the colt will be staying in Britain. "Scat Daddy has obviously been a great sire and I think nearly all his that breezed last year have won," Hillen added. "I bought one for 60 grand tonight and one for 900, so that's two ends of the spectrum." Even Scat Daddy, then, is not immune to the feast-or-famine flavour of the sector this spring. "It's polarised," confirmed Hillen. "There have been horses going through today I bought on spec, just because they were too cheap. I had a longer list today, I thought they were better horses, but it's a buyers' market. It is easier to get 300 grand than it is to get 75Cwhen there's not the gulf in class. It's all or nothing." cont. p2 The 900,000gns sale-topping son of Scat Daddy | Tattersalls IN TDN AMERICA TODAY TDN Q & A: OGDEN PHIPPS II By Chris McGrath The TDN speaks with Ogden Phipps II on his recent NEWMARKET, UK--The sickle moon hanging over the appointment to the NYRA board and his family’s stable. • Serpentine Sublime in the Derby Cont
SUNDAY, 5 JULY 2020 LOVE ROMPS IN THE OAKS SERPENTINE SUBLIME IN Already an emphatic winner of the G1 1000 Guineas, THE DERBY Coolmore=s Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) entered elite territory on Saturday with a nine-length romp in the G1 Investec Oaks at Epsom. While not quite in the arena of the 12-length 1983 heroine Sun Princess (GB), this winning margin equalled that of the 1996 heroine Lady Carla (GB) (Caerleon) and there have been only four fillies in this race=s history to have won by further. Settled behind a duo among the main six-strong group racing adrift of the runaway pacemakers Tiempo Vuela (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) early, the chestnut moved forward to swamp stablemate Ennistymon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) approaching two out. Powering clear from there, she led home another one-two for Ballydoyle as Ennistymon held off Frankly Darling (GB) (Frankel {GB}) by 3/4 of a length for the runner=s-up spot.
