When I walk up the steep hill from Valley House every day to attend Morning Meeting, I am entering an international community of one hundred thirty students and sixty adults from ten countries and twenty states. It is a community where curiosity is fostered and thinking celebrated, where students and adults are challenged to take risks and pursue new opportunities, and where we strive to support and learn from one another both when we enjoy success or make mistakes. In my short time at Dublin, I have witnessed the vision of one couple, Paul and Nancy Lehmann, who believed in the possibility of starting a transformative school for young people in the midst of a catastrophic economic downturn. Today we celebrate their vision and nurture the sense of possibility that they unleashed seventy-five years ago this year. We have witnessed the possibility created by gifts to the School both large and small, of both dollar capital and sweat capital. We can look at the stars millions of light years away in the Perkin Observatory; we can sing, dance and act in a spectacular new Fountain Arts Building; we can row, sail and ski with the appropriate equipment on stunning lakes, trails, and hills. I witnessed the power of possibility just this summer when I was speaking with some trustees and we talked about how great it would be if we could bring downhill skiing back to Dublin for our seventy-fifth year. Now just three months later, with the help of generous trustee donors, we have constructed a beautiful ski area right in the middle of campus that we will name after former teacher and Coach Norm “Pro” Wight.

The Dubliner | Dublin School, Fall 2010 5 Perkin Observatory Dedication, Saturday, September 18, 2010 “The Sense of Possibility”

Swan Nebula

“ e have been anticipating this day for some time and W it is wonderful to have such a supportive crowd in attendance. This beautiful observatory represents to me everything that is special and unique about Dublin School. It represents the sense of possibility that confronts those of us who are fortunate to be a part of this community.” These words from Head of School, Brad Bates, commenced the dedication ceremony. With over 200 people in attendance, Brad explained how the observatory came to be. “This sense of possibility began with the vision of one man. John Gray, class of 1988, studied our school’s campus master plan when it Carl von Mertens, John Gray ’88, Winifred Gray and Brad Bates came out in 2008 and saw a small stone gazebo structure on this field that our architect had added almost as an afterthought. The architect wanted to draw people’s attention to this point of our campus to remind them that it even extended this high. John Gray took one look at that structure scribbled on the paper and said that we should build an observatory on Memorial Field on that very spot. John’s statement started the wheels rolling and trustee David Howe called his friend Landon Clay who suggested we visit the Clay Observatory at the Dexter Southfield School. There we met a very enthusiastic Ron Dantowitz, the Director of the Clay Observatory, who encouraged us to think BIG about our observatory. When I returned from this visit I called John Gray to share all that we had learned. John paused after

6 Envisioning a World of Possibilities “Science, the attempt to make rational sense of the world around us, begins with carefully looking at that world. Astronomy has the advantage that the objects we are looking at are so beautiful and astonishing that simply to see them is to be moved. Too often we forget to look up, to think on the stars, the patterns of their motion, and to use what we see to better understand our place in the universe. The sky becomes commonplace if we let it. But looking through our telescope at Jupiter and its bright, ever shifting, little moons, as Galileo did, forces us to join him in reexamining our beliefs about our position in the heavens. The sky cannot seem commonplace after we have taken the time to see it more carefully. Our new facility gives us access to vast gas clouds, brilliant star clusters, unimagined without a telescope, and galaxies of a remoteness that surpasses any understanding. The Perkin Observatory is transforming science at Dublin by transforming our ability to see the world beyond us.”

“There is an old farmer that lives up the road in Chesham. He farms his grandfather’s farm, a farm that has been in his family since before the Civil War. He heats the main house with wood and splits a couple of cords every year in preparation for the long New England winter.

If you ask the farmer about his life, the conversation invariably comes around to his favorite, most faithful tool. You see, he uses the axe that his father and grandfather used before him. With evident pride, he will tell you: Yup, this is my grandfather’s axe. I’ve only changed the handle three times and changed the head twice. To our farmer, despite the fact that nothing actually remains of the original axe, it remains his grandfather’s axe.

And to us, this remains Paul and Nancy Lehmann’s School.

As we enter our 75th year, the paradox of the farmer’s axe is something to ponder. Like the axe, we would be hard pressed to find anything that actually remains from what the Lehmanns’ began with.

Where we sit now was a wooded lot. The early school buildings that we treasure: Lehmann, the School House and the Pump House, while authentic to their character if not purpose, have been altered and repaired countless times over the years. One of the “newer” buildings, the AB is vivid proof of our ability to reuse and reinvent our past.

Would we not all agree that despite changing the axe head and the handle many times, that Dublin remains Mr. Lehmann’s School?”

“When you leave here today you will leave with the voices of Dublin inside you. These may be voices you did not fully hear while at school, but they will forever be part of your education, and you will find that you will hear them at unexpected times throughout your lives.” – Brad Bates, Head of School

“Dublin still has the pioneer spirit that I love and it has been very exciting and rewarding to be here at this time. I have been blessed… This tent, for these short hours, is filled with the Dublin family of 2010. Graduation day is the day that I am most aware of how the whole is greater than the parts.”

– Caleb Davis, Teacher

10 Envisioning a World of Possibilities “Here at Dublin, the word “community” is thrown around a lot – but I can promise you that this is more than just a buzzword cooked up by the admission department. This is the kind of environment where you learn the things that can’t be taught.”

– Perrin Herman, Class of ’10

“Fall in love with the process and results will follow. Just try. Love acting more than you want to be an actor. Love healing more than you want to be a doctor. Love painting more than you want to be an artist. Love teaching more than you want to be a teacher. The job is in the process.”

– Zhen (Sunny) Zeng, Class of ’10

“Believe in yourself, don’t let anyone ever define who you are. That’s your job. My final words of advice, and I think you know what they will be: Work hard and make good decisions.”

14 Envisioning a World of Possibilities Dublin Athletics – Coming Full Circle By Brooks Johnson, Athletic Director

feel very fortunate to be in my second year at the I helm of the Athletics Department while the School celebrates its 75th Anniversary. It has given me reason to take pause and reflect on Dublin athletics of the past, present and future. We continue to develop and compete in the core team sports of soccer, basketball, tennis, and lacrosse; all sports that have enjoyed a successful and storied history on the hill. But I have also made it my intention to reintroduce our students to those sports that have defined Dublin School in the past and are setting Dublin apart from other small schools - sailing, skiing, and crew. In the fall of 2009, Dublin once again took to the waters of Dublin Lake. With the gift of four small sailing vessels our students were re-introduced to the recreational sport of sailing and basked in the beauty and serenity of the lake. This fall Dublin School invaded the lake with an armada of racing boats and our newly formed Sailing Team competed for the first time in nearly a decade. Thanks to Back row l to r: Coach Rich Connell, Jeffrey Brathwaite ’13, a gift from the Wheeler Family, Dublin students will once Alex Zanzucchi ’14, Tucker Wheeler ’12, Brennan Pramberg ’14, again face-off with other New England prep schools to Hugh Gideon-Murphy ’13. Front row: Coach Marlijne Cook, prove their mastery of their sailing craft. Sailing and use Emma Morgan ’13, Iva deMartelly ’14, and Margaret Elliott ’13. of Dublin Lake have been the subjects of

The Dubliner | Dublin School, Fall 2010 15 Dublin Athletics continued from p. 15 innumerable stories from our alumni and so, too, now will our current students have the opportunity to make memories on the water. Beginning last winter with the re-establishment of the Nordic ski program and with the current opening of the Norm Wight Ski Area, skiing has enjoyed a new breath of life at Dublin. For many years our students flocked to the slopes at nearby Crotched Mountain for recreational skiing and snowboarding. In 2009-10 we required all skiers and boarders to participate in racing instruction. This winter we will race in the Lakes Region Alpine Ski series and in the NEPSAC GS and LS Championships. The new slope on campus has only re-energized our students and the appointment of David Stone and Rich Connell to the ski coaching staff ensures that our students will be fully prepared to ski and compete with some of the best prep skiers in New England. For ten years Caleb Davis shared his passion for Crew with Dublin Students. In his final season he was able to lead this team to compete in various local venues. With the gift of a new racing shell from current parent, Tim Steele, we will be able to continue this new tradition and give our students the opportunity to compete on an even level with other prep crew programs. The Dublin Crew team will practice and host races at Thorndike Pond. Just as in the fall and winter, Dublin students will Dublin School Sailing, 1980’s. spend their spring outdoors taking advantage of and experiencing our extended campus. If you would like to learn more about the athletic program at Dublin School, please contact Brooks Johnson at (603) 563-1246 or [email protected]

The Dubliner | Dublin School, Fall 2010 25 When Disaster Struck Life after a catastrophe Needless to say, in the days and weeks after Mike died, keeping up the lawn was not my first priority – and so, as I said – I was afraid everyone would know where the “Widow McGinty” lived. That is, until the day that Chris Mitchell showed up. I didn’t know Chris very well. He’s a longtime resident of Foxboro – very involved in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts -- and he runs a local landscaping firm. But a couple of weeks after 9/11, without asking, he shows up and mows my lawn. A week after that, he did it again. And then a week later, he did it again. I said, “Chris …”And he said “Cindy, don’t worry about it. Focus on your sons, focus on your life, leave your lawn to me and my guys.” Then on the very first Mother’s Day following 9/11, Chris says, “Cindy, there are a few extra things we need to do around the house. Don’t worry about it, but you may see some extra activity, okay?” Okay, Chris. The next thing I know, plants start being delivered and trees start coming down and Chris – along with a team of Boy Scouts and their fathers converge on my yard and -- for Mother’s Day -- they re-landscaped my front yard and laid y name is Cindy McGinty. Golf Tournament at Dublin Lake Club Golf Course

On October 2, 2010 Dublin School celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a golf tournament at the beautiful Dublin Lake Club golf course. We were honored to have such a great group of alumni, students, parents, faculty and friends come out for the day. We would like to say a special “Thank You” to trustee and former faculty member Suzie Vogel for hosting a reception at her home after the tournament.
