DOCTOR OF SACRED THEOLOGY- Hugh Elmer Brown

Eminent preacher of the Christian gospel; pastor for thirty years of the First Congregational Church of Evanston; distinguished leader in his own denomination and in wider church circles; untiring in efforts for the good of this community and of the world as a whole. Possessing extraordinary gifts of insight and humor and a genuine love for people, he has mediated to many the healing compassion of God.

Doctor of Science — Detlev Wulf Bronk

Physiologist and physicist, eminent in research and administration; expositor and demonstrator of the wealth of knowledge to be found in the regions common to several sciences; Director of the Eldridge Reeves Johnson Foundation for Medical Physics at the University of Pennsylvania, and Chairman of the National Research Council; a scientist whose wise counsel has done much to promote human welfare in Europe as well as in America.

Doctor of Science — Fang Hsuin Lee

Distinguished chemist, teacher, and administrator, who, after earning his doctorate at North- western University, returned to his alma mater, Nanking University, where he became successively chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. When invading armies engulfed his country he supervised the removal of the university to far western China where, under most trying conditions and with meager equipment, he carried on both teaching and research. He exemplifies the patience, fortitude, and determination of true scholar- ship in whatever country, whatever age.

Doctor of Humane Letters — Louis Booker Wright

Former professor of research at the Huntington Library and newly appointed director of the Folger Shakespeare Library; noted authority in the civilizations of the English Renaissance and Colonial America; literary scholar, historian, editor, and teacher, whose researches have revaluated a large segment of our culture, and whose active concern for the advancement of learning has given example, guidance, and encouragement to a new generation of scholars.

Doctor of Science — Vernon C. David

Rush Professor of Surgery at the University of Illinois, and surgeon-in-chief at the Presbyterian Hospital of ; an international leader in his profession, whose significant contributions to medical science, and whose constant and untiring interest in the welfare of his fellow man, have made him one of our most distinguished citizens.
