In past, no study highlights the assessment of the fish biodiversity of this state in holistic way except by Khan (2000) who justreported a compilation of 129 fishes under 27 families [2]. To substantiate and Pathak AK, ICAR- National Bureau revise the assessment, the fish diversity of this state was assessed by investigating these rivers, analyzing and of Fish Genetic Resources, Canal documenting the information on different fisheries measurements including biology, distribution and conservation Ring Road, Post-Dilkusha, Devikhera, status. About 10,000 individuals were collected and the analysis of individuals revealed 126 fish species under 28 families and 74 genera nearly mitigating the earlier reports. The highest species diversity was recorded in Lucknow-226002, Uttar Pradesh, India, the river Ganga (90) followed by Gerua (87) and then Gomati (68). -

FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. Pure App. Biosci. 3 (1): 247-256 (2015) Research Article INTERNATIONAL JO URNAL OF PURE & APPLIED BIOSCIENCE Ichthyofauna Diversity of River Kaljani in Cooch Behar District of West Bengal, India Arpita Dey 1, Ruksa Nur 1, Debapriya Sarkar 2 and Sudip Barat 1* 1Aquaculture and Limnology Research Unit, Department of Zoology, University of North Bengal, Darjeeling, Siliguri - 734 013, West Bengal, India 2Fishery Unit, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Pundibari-736165, Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India ABSTRAC T The present study was conducted to generate a primary database on ichthyofauna diversity of river Kaljani flowing through Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India. 138 indigenous fish species belonging to 31 families were identified. The family Cyprinidae represented the largest diversity accommodating 20 genera and 50 species. Amongst all the fishes 58 species have ornamental value and 55 species the food value. Ornamental fishes are dominant over the food fishes and carnivorous fishes are dominant over the omnivorous and herbivorous fishes. According to IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature ) and CAMP (Conservation Assessment and Management Plan) the conservation status of the fishes are listed as, 1(0.72%) species as Critically Endangered,13(9.42%) species as Endangered 41(29.71%) species as Vulnerable, 35 (25.36%) species as at Lower Risk Near Threatened, 41(29.71%) species as Lower Risk Least Concerned,4 (2.89%)species as Data Deficient and 3(2.17%) species as Not Evaluated. It is concluded, that anthropogenic pressure arising out of agriculture run offs, indiscriminatory use of fishing with new fishing technologies and widespread habitation of people have contributed to the vulnerability of the fish diversity. -

IN!fRODUCTION C·onsiderable amount of interest has been s,hown in the study of fishes of Doon Valley for the last three dacades (Hora and Mukerji, 1936; Lal and Ch'atterji, 1962; Lal, 1963; and Singh, 1964) but a thorough collection from the whole of the Doon Valley was never made. Recently patties. from Zoological Survey ·of India have extensively surveyed the known waters of whole of Doon Valley and Inade a representative collection of fishes, which has recently been studied. The collection con tains a large number of species not so far reported from the Doon Valley; a detailed account of this will be published separately. In this paper interesting observations on the mor phology and distribution of some glyptothoracoid fishes have been recorded. OBSERVATIONS Th'e glyptothoracoid fishes differ from the glyptostern'oid group of fishes mainly in the presence of an adhesive thoracic apparatus on the ch'es't. No representative of glyptostcrnoid fishes has been as yet reported from Doon Valley, although Euchiloglanis hodgarti (Hora) exists in an adjoining area, i.e., Kali River, District Nainital, U.P. (Menon and Sen, 1966). Of' th'e glyptothoracoid fishes, only G. pectinopterus (McClelland) has thus far been known from poon Valley (Hora & Mukerji, 392 Records of the Zoological Survey of India 1936, and Singh, 1964). -
