Update No.162 - Two Full On Weekends

HIGHLIGHTS OF TWO FULL WEEKENDS OF CRICKET 2 & 3 Feb. and 9 & 10 Feb. Much REAL cricket – IT20s, for Black Caps and White Ferns, vs India, for our Seniors - two day games over Saturday, Sunday, then the Prelim Final of the Jeff Crowe Cup for our Prems. For me, one of the major highlights was the success of the opening attack of our Fourths but, first, our Women’s Premier Reserves:

OUR WOMEN’S PREMIER RESERVES: Renee Macmillan and Kate Irwin - 146 unbroken opening partnership to beat Cornwall by 10

Sat. 2 Feb. - Renee Macmillan 70* and Kate Irwin 57* - unbroken 1st parnership of 146 to win the game! NOTE: Renee is 16 years old, Kate Irwin is only 12 – a truly outstanding performance Good thing they were playing Women’s Open Grade – in a Junior Boys’ Grade, Kate would have been made to retire after facing 30 balls!

OUR PREMIER MEN – PRELIM. SEMI FINAL Sun. 10 Feb. Parnell vs. Takapuna at Onewa Domain

Ben Horne – 136* off 121 balls and Nikith Perera, 16 years old , first full Premier game, 9* (17) saw us home! Chasing Takapuna’s 258 we lost wickets early. Enter Ben Horne at no. 4 – score 2/41, then 5/128. Ollie, then Aniket, steadied the ship taking the total to 223/6. Ben had reached his ton -plain sailing – NO, Aniket caught behind, Josh caught at slip next ball 223/8. 36 still needed, enter 16 year old Nikith – no sign of nerves, blocked first , pushed second passed cover for 2. Ben took over – superbly, he farmed the bowling but then showed full confidence in Nikith and together they knocked off the last remaing runs – truly great game!

OUR MEN’S FOURTHS Our opening attack of 40 year old Rudi Bischoff and 13 year old Zac Essenhigh dominated Howick Pak

Rudi 5/22 (13) plus 49 & 20* Zac – 2/7 off 9 on Sat. for Fourths plus game clinching 16* for Thirds on Sunday Our opening attack, Rudi Bisschoff aged 40 and 13 year old Zac Essenhigh bowled superbly restricting Howick Pak to only 8 runs in the first 10 overs. Rudi finished with 5/22 off 13 overs, Zac with 2/7 off 9 of which 5 were maidens. On Sunday, Zac was called up to our Thirds. Needing only 45 for outright victory, Zac, batting at 3, saved the day being 16 whilst 5 wickets fell before the 45 was reached and victory achieved. Great weekend for the 13 year old. And Rudi – 5/22 and scores of 49 and 25* - not bad for a 40 year old.

SUMMING UP – YOUTH TRIUMPHS: KATE IRWIN aged 12, ZAC ESSENHIGH 13, RENEE MACMILLAN and NIKITH PERERA 16 ALL PLAYING IN ADULT, SENIOR GRADES, REAL CRICKET WITH NO ARBITRARY RESTRICTIONS

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS OVER THE FORTNIGHT MAKERS Brad Rodden - 144 for our Prems vs Suburbs NL Cam Gibbons – 112 off 174 balls for Prem Reserves vs Waitakere

Brad Rodden’s 144 of just 75 balls included 12 x 4s & 12 x 6s Cam Gibbons’ 112 helped Reserves to 320/9 dec. Brad’s 12 sixes is a Club Premier Grade record Cam & his Skipper, Will Ormiston, put on 104 for the 1st wicket

Round 4. Sat. & Sun. 2 & 3 February PARNELL vs SUBURBS NEW LYNN at Ken Maunder Park 1. PARNELL 118/10 Ben Rainger 37 (78), Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 33 (61), S Solia 2/32 (12) M Barry 2/24 (8), D Watson 3/27 (12) & 288/10 Ben Rainger 53 (94), Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 31 (83), Brad Rodden 144 (75) J Parslow 5/67 (7) SUBURBS NL 191/9 dec. J Bassett-Graham 69, O Pringle 2/33 (17), Aniket Parikh 4/41 (10) Nikith Perera 2/21 (6) & 219/5 (30.4) Jeet Raval 71 (60), J Cracknell 30 (17), J Parslow 41 (55), V Davies 39 (23) Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 3/59 (11) RESULT: PARNELL LOST OUTRIGHT BY 5 WICKETS Ben Rainger, back from injury, and Flynn McGregor-Sumpter were the only batsmen who put their hands up on our 1st innings and it was the same in the 2nd innings, that is until Skipper Brad took the SNL bowlers (including part timers) apart in an astonishing knock of just 75 balls. Brad’s 12 sixes sets a new Club record – last season he hit 36 overall and, already, has cleared the 24 times this season. This left SNL almost 200 to score in 34 overs – over to the bowlers who, sadly, weren’t able to contain a most competent batting side - all credit to Jeet Raval (who said he isn’t a Limited Overs bat??). Jeet and Joe Cracknell, Middlesex 2nds ‘keeper/bat, got the chase off to a cracking start and James Parslow and Victor Davies completed the task.

Flynn on the left, Nikith making his Prem debut ( U17 rep., Nikith is Saint Kentigern College’s 1st XI for 2019) & Ben Rainger

Ben Horne ‘keeping – great leg side catch off Aniket And yet another 6 to Brad!

Round 5. Saturdays 9 & 16 February PARNELL vs HOWICK PAKURANGA at Shore Road Reserve 1. PARNELL 178/10 Ollie Pringle 54, D Fernz 4/57, M McEwen 3/53 HOWICK PAKURANGA 55/1 TO BE CONTINUED NEXT SATURDAY, 16 FEBRUARY

Parnell didn’t make the most of batting first on an excellent track with only Ollie Pringle showing any real resolution. Admittedly Howick Pak’s attack is a top one – Danry Fernz and Matt McEwen are opening bowlers for the Aces but the opportunity for our lads to step up was lost. Howick Pak lie only 1 point behind leader Suburbs NL’s 60 so they are very keen. In 3rd is Takapuna (53) and we are a distant 4th on 38.

Jeff Crowe Cup – Limited Overs Major Championship

Preliminary Semi Final 10 February TAKAPUNA vs. PARNELL Onewa Domain 1. TAKAPUNA 258/10 (50) G Harley 64 (99), W O’Donnell 74 (83), H van Vuuren 53 (45), Ollie Pringle 1/54, Henry King 3/43, Josh Fisher2/47, Nikith 1/54, Aniket Parikt 3/59 (all bowlers 10 overs) PARNELL 259/8 (47) Ben Rae 20 (29), 19 (29), Ben Horne 136* (121), Ollie Pringle 28 (27) M Jones 4/37 (10), J Sussex 2/62 (7) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 2 WICKETS & SO QUALIFYING FOR SEMI FINAL vs HOWICK PAKURANGA, at LLOYD ELSMORE PARK, SUNDAY, 17 FEBRUARY at 11 am

Our pace attack – Ollie Pringle, Henry King – wicket in his 1st over & should have had 2 and Josh Fisher Parnell got off to a great start – Henry having Sunde caught by Ben Rae in his first over. But hen O’Donnell was dropped of him – O’Donnell who had scored a double century for his club and a ton for Auckland A in the past week. Not so good – Harley and O’Donnell competently took the score to 129 when Aniket struck – O’Donnell lbw. From there wickets fell quite regularly after small 20 odd partnerships – Henry returned to have Harley caught by Josh. Nikith, left arm spin, had been introduced early and was economical as were all our bowlers. Van Vuuren put up resistance but he was finally caught behind off Josh. Last pair added 21 till Jones was snared by Nikith off his very last ball.

Our spinners – Nikith Perera, left arm orthodox, on debut and off spinner Aniket Parikt In reply to Takapuna’s 258, Ben Rainger was caught behind off ter Braak early but Ben Rae and Chappie were settling in till, at 41, Chappie had a brain storm and holed out at square leg. For quite a while it was downhill – Andy hit a poor golf shot to long on, Brad drove to midoff who threw his wicket down. Ben Horne, in at 4, remained in very good touch and was joined by Ollie – 128/5. Finally a partnership – 52 added but Ollie was caught off Sussex. Ben Horne was looking better every ball but much now rested on Aniket and he didn’t fail. Ben reached his very well deserved ton and, at 223/6, we looked home and hosed. Jones, left arm spinner who had opened the bowling, returned – Aniket caught behind. Josh to the crease – very first ball caught at slip!! Now 223/8,

Ben Rae and Mark Chapman both got starts but didn’t go on 36 still needed, enter 16 year old Nikith to join Ben. Cool as, the 16 year old played a sound forward defensive shot to his first ball and off the second a classical drive past cover for two. End of over – Ben farmed the bowling for the next couple but then showed complete faith in Nikith by taking a run off the first ball of the next over. Nikith didn’t falter – he picked up singles, Ben pulled a 6 way over the western fence and the runs came steadily. Ben had kept us well ahead of the required run rate so that was never an issue and, with neither batsman troubled, the final 36 needed were knocked off with only the spectators showing signs of nerves!

Cometh the hour, cometh the men – an awesome innings by Ben Horne and Nikith, a debut he will always remember!

So concluded a great game of cricket and the fullest possible credit to Ben Horne for quite probably his best ever innings for Parnell – 17 fours, 1 six, Ben showed total composure! And Nikith, the 16 year old in his first full Premier game – what a debut! Now for the Semi Final against Howick Pakuranga on Sunday – yet another MUST WIN! And great to see the lads back in maroon again!!

Premier Women’s Grade – Prichard Cup (Limited Overs Champs)

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade – Two Day Major Championship

Saturday & Sunday , 2 & 3 February Round 4. PARNELL vs WAITAKERE at Shore Road 1. PARNELL 320/8 dec. Will Ormiston 50, Cam Gibbons 112, Sam Klippel 34, Giacomo Lamplough 68 WAITAKERE 149/10 Keegan Russell 2/49 (17), Hugh Teesdale 1/31 (13), Giacomo Lamplough 1/6 (7) Sam Klippel 3/22 (7), Razin Bharde 2/20 (7), Simon Walker 0/13 (5), Cam Gibbons 1/0 (1) & 177/8 no bowling figures available RESULT: MATCH DRAWN – Parnell earning 1st innings points

Skipper Will Ormiston won the toss, elected to bat on an excellent track, and, with Cam Gibbons, put on 104 for the 1st wicket. Will was caught immediately on getting his 50 but Cam continued in great form helped by Sam Klippel. Cam’s 112 came in 174 balls but he was dismissed at 190 and a further 3 wickets fell with only another 27 added. Then came Giacomo who, with Keegan (0 off 4 balls), took the total to 260 when the latter was . Fortunately Razin put in some stout resistance whilst Giacomo scored at better than a run a ball. Razin was bowled at 317 and, 3 runs later Giacomo’s innings (of 62 balls) ended and the declaration came – 320/8. Our bowlers all performed well - a sharp opening attack (Keegan and Hugh), Giacomo bowled very economically indeed, Razin had two caught but Sam, with his leggies was the most successful bowler capturing 3. Hugh finally nabbed a wicket after an undeserved drought, Cam picked up on just prior to a break, and Simon bowled tightly but without success. The result being that Waitakere was dismissed for 149 and the follow -on was enforced. Waitaker fared badly in their 2nd innings – both openers being sismissed for ducks.and prospects of an outright were most promising till Hollister dug in and scored a half century. Still hope – two more ducks but then numbers 9 and 10 spoilt the party scoring 41* and 34* respectively. Their 9th wicket partnership could not be broken, stumps were drawn with their total at 177/8 and the Match a Draw.

Chak Reporting: Lovely beach view and a perfect sun with lightening quick outfield was a perfect recipe for the game. After losing the toss Kings, led by Chak, were forced to bowl first. Opponents started to swing their bats around to upset the bowlers initially and got few lucky boundaries to get off to a good start. Arul got the first break through for kings when the batsmen was caught by Roy at extra covers. Karthik, on his come back game, was sharp in the field and got rid of another opening batsmen when he tried to steal a quick single off him. When he was later introduced to bowl, Karthik bowled in the right channels and got 3 quick wickets. Opponents were 5 down for 65. But they put on over 100 runs for the sixth wicket. Chak tried every option he could but couldn't break the partnership. Arul came back into the attack and provided the much needed break for kings. It was just formalities after that but the opponents made a competitive score of 200. Abrar and Chak opened the batting for Kings and made a cautious start. They were happy to nudge the ball around and take singles. They waited for the bad balls and put them away with ease. They matched each other with their elegant stroke play. Chak tried to accelerate and skied one to the skipper, who wasn't in the right position for it but took the catch with no problem. Pavan joined Abrar in the middle and continued to keep the fielders busy. Abrar completed yet another well made half century. Soon after, he was was undone by the bowler and was holed out at deep mid-wicket. Roopesh and Pavan continued to rotate strike and smashed boundaries almost every over to get closer to the target. Pavan lost his middle stump to an in-swinger. Karthik made sure he was there till the end and scored the winning runs. Nobody means to drop a catch, but Kings were shelling too many today. Kings dropped seven catches in this game. Something to work on for the next game. A big thank you to our sponsors and supporters for their continuing support.

CORNWALL FIELD DAY - SUNDAY, 10 FEBRUARY

Idyllic! Year 7a Game Photo Craig Presland

A hugely successful Day was held last Sunday with Cornwall teams coming out overall on top with 9 wins to 4. The Crowe Morgan Cup was therefore presented to Cornwall by Ross Morgan (after whom the Cup is partly named – the late being the other, both Martin and Ross being icons for our respective clubs). A glorious Day weatherwise and, as always, Cornwall Park looked superb – quite the loveliest ground, a wonderful place to play cricket! Our very grateful thanks go to Nick Butler, Cornwall’s Junior Chairman for hosting and organising the Day. As Nick himself said in an email to , our Director of Cricket – “It was a fantastic day of cricket- played in excellent spirit with a number or really close games. It was great to have Ross Morgan present at prizegiving. In all, wonderfully enjoyable, the only regret heard expressed was that the “Age and Stages” restrictions had to be imposed on the older age groups despite these being representative matches. These dictates distort the games, spoil them for the older players and quite unnecessarily complicate matters for the umpires and scorers. As one parent put it, the dictates “are insulting to the players”.

And the Year 7bs and 7cs on Cornwall nos. 2. and 3. Craig, many thanks for the photos!

GRADE 5: PARNELL LATHAM vs AUCC TITANS 2 February at Auckland War Memorial Domain

The victorious Parnell Team with the coveted Trophy and Tom McCulloch, Man of the Match – a 5 wicket bag and 43 off just 23 balls

The Domain is a wonderful and ground. In 1862 Parnell cricketers were the first to start clearing the scrub and to drain the swamp to create this cricket ground. By the 1880s it was regarded as “one of the most beautiful in Australasia” and games against English and Australian teams were played there. Sadly, other civic interests intervened and cricket authorities had to look elsewhere and so Eden Park was founded. If only could be returned to the Domain – it would be the perfect setting.

GRADE 1s - THEY MEET AT SHORE ROAD, FRIDAY EVENINGS – 4.30 to 6.00pm

Feb 2, 2019 - The complete tale of cricket's infamous underarm incident of 1981 has never been told – until now. Underarm: The Ball That Changed Cricket ...

Per your Editor who watched this documentary on Prime, Monday, 4 February. As one who watched intently the TV coverage of that fateful ODI as it unfolded in 1981, I have to saw that this is an exceptional documentary. I couldn’t fault the facts presented nor the opinions expressed. I congratulate Greg Chappell for fronting in the manner he did and, likewise all the other players who appeared and spoke so honestly and frankly. I also very much respect Rod Marsh for his refusal to be interviewed. If there is a regret, there was no mention of either of the umpires even being approached for an interview but, then, that could be a delicate area. I can say, thank goodness we now have not only neutral umpires but also the DRS. If you haven’t see this Doco then I urge you to hunt it up – it woll be well worth your effort and, finally, I congratulate the producers on doing such a fine job! Bryan Haggitt, Editor

Profile (per Martin Williamson, ESPNcricinfo) Ole Mortensen was a big, burly, brisk seamer who was a member of the Derbyshire side for more than a decade from 1983. A tax inspector from Denmark, he was established in the Danish national side by the time he first played for Derbyshire's 2nd XI in 1981. Two years later he made his first-team debut, enjoying a memorable debut season, taking 66 wickets including a career-best 6 for 27 (match figures of 11 for 89) in a narrow win over Yorkshire. Accurate and economical, he was particularly effective in the one-day game and was a key part of Derbyshire's 1990 Sunday League success, and his 1 for 41 was crucial in their six-run defeat of Lancashire in the 1993 B&H final. His batting was usually restricted to a determined forward-defensive thrust (although he claimed to have made a double hundred in Denmark) but the presence of Devon Malcolm in the county XI meant he was often promoted to the dizzy heights of No. 10. He bowed out in 1994 with a benefit, and county matches that summer saw a proliferation of Viking helmets, a tribute to the his popularity. For Denmark, Mortensen appeared in four ICC Trophy tournaments (1979, 1986, 1990 and 1994), claiming 63 wickets at 10.41, including 7 for 19 against Israel in Nairobi in 1994. He coached Denmark in the 2001 ICC Trophy.

Quiz

Above are photos of two cricketers who played for a club that visited, and played, Parnell not too long ago. Note that these two were not current players nor part of that touring party here but, way back, they were instrumental in setting up that club and making it famous.

QUESTIONS: 1. Who are they? 2. Which club did they form and where? 3. Which one of the two played Test cricket?
