LIBERATION LAUGHTER by Jacqueline Cain

If you happen to come to the center on a Friday, between 10:00 and 11:30 am, you’ll most likely hear a “whole lot of laughing going on”. Since laughter is contagious, you’ll most likely break out laughing yourself, and this will please Nancy Lewars, the lady behind all that raucous merriment, no end. She is the creator and facilitator of the highly popular Liberation Laughter class that’s been “going on” eight years this coming January. The inspiration behind the conception of this class was sparked by Nancy’s realization she wasn’t truly enjoying some of the assorted volunteer commitments she’d been doing. Owning up to this feeling freed her to change from being the “good” volunteer to being the “fun” volunteer. “It was a release,” Nancy says. “I felt liberated from the onus of being “good”. What this retired English teacher really wanted to do on a volunteer basis was teach a class that would empower participants to think on their feet and have fun. She chose the name Liberation Laughter because laughter frees us to stop taking ourselves so seriously. When we laugh, we liberate ourselves. ` Even though Nancy has studied improvisation, she’s quick to point out that hers is not an improv or joke-telling class. What participants do is play Though women’s work is never done, games. This is accomplished through team exercises where the dialogue They do get out to have some fun. moves back and forth. Noland week. Sophia Weber, who turns 100 in April, is a class regular and highlight of the group. “If you are feeling down when you come, you are not when you leave,” she enthuses. A sampling of other comments from regulars are: “Laughter is very important in my life, and I get lots of it here and especially enjoy the people that come;” “participating in the class has made me more comfortable when I speak to any group and has also sharpened my ability to think on my feet;” “it is mind stimulating with new physical and mental exer- cises each week;” “the class is a mix of word games, songs, mimes, silliness and laughs.” Newcomers to the Liberation Laughter class can be assured they’ll be welcomed with open arms by the regulars, and like them, will enjoy an hour and a half of games, relaxation, camaraderie and merriment. To be sure, when Nancy’s class is in session, laughter can be heard from one end of BISC to the other and it’s contagious. “Don’t be afraid to join,” Sophia (our soon to be centenarian) advises. “Nobody does anything wrong. If you don’t come you won’t know what you are missing.”

The tremendous amount of support participants have received from taking Nancy’s class, and the close friendships that have formed, have inspired a number of spin-offs by individuals and groups. There is a book discussion group; a group that goes to the matinees at Act Theatre; another group meets to play board games; a group goes to the Edge performances; one member is now making movies of the Liberation Laughter class from the videos she takes on her iPhone; another opens her home to host the annual Liberation Laughter Christmas party; another writes poems in honor of each participants birthday; one member is a long-time docent at the Seattle Aquarium and takes groups on tours. Waterfront Thrift - Tijen Sion-Hotchkiss,

In the spirit of gratefulness, I would like to thank all of the volunteers and customers that make the thrift shop such a wonderful place to work. I feel so fortunate that I look forward to coming to work. Also, a big thanks to you angels who so quickly fulfill our requests for puzzles, boxes, paper and plastic bags, and countless other items.

Our after Thanksgiving/Christmas sale was a success! We sold plenty of Christmas ornaments, dishes, wrapping paper and decorative items. Fortunately, ongoing Christmas donations have kept the shop full.

We are very thankful for daily donations that keep the shop fresh and full. With that said, because of storage and shop space restrictions, there are some items we cannot accept. Below is a list of these items:

Books: encyclopedias, reference books, dictionaries, outdated travel and computer books, text books.

Furniture: We will accept small and medium items of furniture by appointment only. Please feel free to call Tijen at 206-713-3937. We cannot accept beds and mattresses, computer chairs and file cabinets.

Baby items: Cribs, playpens, car seats, strollers and baby clothing.

Mobility Aids: Crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs

Undergarments: We can only accept unworn/packaged men’s and women’s underwear.

Flammable liquids: Due to safety reasons, we cannot accept paints, oils, solvents and camp stove gases.

On the flip side, here are some in-demand items that sell quite quickly: Gently used towels and sheets, pots and pans (especially cast iron), knit gloves and hats, leather gloves, like-new socks (especially for men) warm boots, flashlights, art supplies, 500 piece puzzles, silverware, costume jewelry, kitchen gadgets, small lamps.

This is such a busy and fun time of the year. Please stop by the shop and say hello!

THE BETTER HOMES & GARDENS COOKBOOK by Ruth Flanagan

Over the years the cookbooks on my shelf have come and gone, replaced by the lighter, leaner, healthier versions. Except for one --- my red and white checked Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook. Faded now from years of use, its spine broken and some of its pages coming loose, it still holds a prominent place in my cookbook arsenal. I received this treasured volume as a shower gift just before I got married and relied heavily on its contents during the early years of my marriage. As a young bride I knew very little about preparing meals. My sister was the one who spent time in the kitchen with Mom while I was most likely climbing a tree or hiding somewhere reading a book.

The numerous stains on page 71 testify to the many loaves of Banana Nut bread made at Christmas and sometimes given as gifts. The well-worn pages of the Meat section demonstrate how often I checked on cooking times for a roast, a ham or Thanksgiving turkey. Page 63 is where I got the recipe for a cheese ball that my family asks for at holiday time. My favorite recipe was for scalloped potatoes, which I served often and always at Easter with ham. Once when my sister was helping me prepare dinner for a family gathering, I asked her if she would make the scalloped potatoes and I handed her my trusty cookbook. She asked me where I kept my skillets and I explained that she should just fix them in the casserole dish I had sitting on the counter. She said she needed the skillet to make the white sauce called for in the recipe and gave me a look that indicated I should really know that. When I told her that I always just mixed together the flour, milk and butter and poured that over the potato and onion slices, she called me all kinds of stupid and proceeded to show me the proper way to make a white sauce.

Say what you will, my scalloped potatoes always came out fine, never curdled, but the ones my sister made “properly” that day were curdled. Getting to Know You Page 13

Introducing our new Mistress of Ceremonies, Ms. Frazzle! Submitted by Colleen Keilbart

Ms. Frazzle will be attending all our parties to help lead us through the event. Ms. Frazzle is a substitute teacher who has a support pet named Hiss, who is always wrapped around her neck. She comes from a small Midwest town and is getting acclimated to living on Bainbridge Island. Ms. Frazzle was developed by our own Karen King, who is someone you all probably know. Karen has been a volunteer extraordinaire at the Senior Center for more than ten years, becoming a member when her husband, Bob, joined the softball team! When Karen’s board position was ending as of December 31, 2018, she upped her game by developing Ms. Frazzle.

She will continue to lead the Wanna B Karaoke singers, a group she started after feeling some people just aren’t inclined to sing with the Evergreen Singers. Karen was also responsible for initiating the Fob Friday program, where 31 businesses give Senior Center members a 10% discount every Friday (see page 15 for a list) and has served on the Marketing Committee for ten years. Come to our next event and meet Ms. Frazzle and say hello to Karen.

Hello! I am Sara Prout (and yes, that rhymes with sauerkraut, and, yes, I make my own), your freshly minted Volunteer Director here at BISC --- at the ready to help make your participation here, as a member and/or a volunteer, as seamless and enjoyable as possible.

Originally from New York, after undergrad at Wellesley College I quickly found my way out into world -- studying, volunteering and working abroad, eventually landing and earning an MS in Community Development at UC-Davis, focused on community food security and farmland preservation .

In and around raising three kids (all high school teens this year!), I've been serving community-based and environmental organizations for nearly three decades. I find joy in matching passionate people with remarkable programs and have lived and worked towards this end in the Northeastern US, Western Europe, India, California's Central Valley, and now Washington's Puget Sound -- primarily raising funds for local, regional and global orgs such as The Nature Conservancy, IslandWood, One Call for All, the Tyler Moniz Project, Yes! Magazine and the former Bainbridge Graduate Institute (BGI).

I'm a pianist at heart and along the way I've also managed an organic farm, made at least one quilt, knitted a sweater or two, and love making my own dilly beans, applesauce and other sweet and/or spicy condiments to share with others in the off-season.

I'm thrilled to be here, and truly looking forward to working and playing with each of you. You may have seen me popping up here and there over the last couple weeks, getting to know the who, what, where and when of all things BISC and now you can expect to see me daily -- so, in the event I haven't done so first, please reach out and introduce yourself!
