I regularly report that the Awards scheme continues to grow from strength to strength, but you really have excelled yourselves this year! In 2018, we had a record 74 entries, but this year the total has gone up to no less than 98, clearly underlining the regard and prestige which the Awards scheme now commands, across the whole of Sussex, including Brighton & Hove, and much further afield.

CHICHESTER FREE SCHOOL HUNSTON ROAD, HUNSTON, CHICHESTER PO20 1NP The former Carmelite Convent site in Hunston, West Sussex was built in 1870, had fallen into a dilapidated state following the building being vacated in 1994. The Building was converted to build an ‘all through’ school and to completely renovate the Convent to become the ‘Heart of the School’. THE ANNEXE LEWES An understated, contemporary addition, to an imposing Victorian building provides a self- contained living space for an elderly relative in a garden setting. Carefully framed openings connect the new spaces to the Victorian grandeur of the rooms beyond. Although physically attached to the house, the interface is a subtle transition, formed with frameless glass. Neil Holland - Architect and Artist The winner of the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Award 2018 was Neil Holland, recognising his extraordinary contribution to architecture in the county. His work includes the early 1970s commission to design the reception building for Sir Peter Scott’s Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in Arundel, followed by numerous award winning residential and other projects across Sussex. Neil is also a successful and renowned artist, painting landscapes of the South East of England and focusing on his home country of Sussex. His paintings and architectural drawings have been exhibited at the Mall Galleries, London and the Royal Academy. On presenting the Award to Neil at last year’s ceremony, Dr John Godfrey said “in his painting, as well as his architecture, Neil celebrates the English landscape and the harmonious relationship between landscape and man’s use of it, especially in building design. It is for this reason, and for his outstanding contribution to the architectural landscape of Sussex over so many years, that Neil is awarded the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year 2018.” The winner of the 2019 Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Award will be announced at the awards presentation on Wednesday 3rd July at Pangdean Old Barn, Pyecombe.
