I regularly report that the Awards scheme continues to grow from strength to strength, but you really have excelled yourselves this year! In 2018, we had a record 74 entries, but this year the total has gone up to no less than 98, clearly underlining the regard and prestige which the Awards scheme now commands, across the whole of Sussex, including Brighton & Hove, and much further afield.

Our judges had difficult decisions to make in reaching their conclusions on which projects were to receive Awards and which justified Highly Commended status. The new lead covering uses the heaviest sand-cast lead available, requiring great skill and experience to lay. The end result is spectacular. GOODWOOD CHAMPAGNE BAR GOODWOOD RACECOURSE The Champagne Bar is the sixth successful project with R W Armstrong working on the BEFORE Goodwood Estate. WEALDEN CREMATORIUM HORAM ROAD, HORAM, HEATHFIELD TN21 0FX A striking contemporary single- INTERIOR storey building, with seating for up to 120 mourners in the ceremony hall. Set in a new country park created in 13 hectares of previously agricultural land, the modern design uses stone, glass and water to provide a contemplative setting within the folds of the local landscape. Neil Holland - Architect and Artist The winner of the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Award 2018 was Neil Holland, recognising his extraordinary contribution to architecture in the county. His work includes the early 1970s commission to design the reception building for Sir Peter Scott’s Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in Arundel, followed by numerous award winning residential and other projects across Sussex. Neil is also a successful and renowned artist, painting landscapes of the South East of England and focusing on his home country of Sussex. His paintings and architectural drawings have been exhibited at the Mall Galleries, London and the Royal Academy. On presenting the Award to Neil at last year’s ceremony, Dr John Godfrey said “in his painting, as well as his architecture, Neil celebrates the English landscape and the harmonious relationship between landscape and man’s use of it, especially in building design. It is for this reason, and for his outstanding contribution to the architectural landscape of Sussex over so many years, that Neil is awarded the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year 2018.” The winner of the 2019 Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Award will be announced at the awards presentation on Wednesday 3rd July at Pangdean Old Barn, Pyecombe.
