Preserving Photographic Materials (Live and Online)

Date: January 9th and 10th, 2012

Time: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Please note: This class is an interactive, learn at your desk session. The class is held over TWO sessions and may require some minimal homework to receive your certificates. Class Description:

Photographic materials present significant preservation concerns in library and archival collections. They are often heavily used and are fragile and susceptible to damage due to improper handling and storage conditions. Visual examples of photographic processes and deteriorated photographs will be identified and discussed.

Topics covered include: Early photographic processes Issues with prints, color, film, glass, and albums Environment and storage guidelines Handling, housing, and security guidelines New technology processes and issues

Description: Participants will receive hands-on training in guiding library patrons through several online job resources and helping patrons decide which tool is right for them.

The session will focus on two major resources with a variety of tools designed to maximize the job search: LearningExpress Library (with online practice tests, online courses and job and career related e-books) Brainfuse JobNow (practice tests, resume and interview instruction and access to an online tutor).

Additional career resources will be covered and explored.

Effective Time Management

Date: Thursday, February 23, 2012

Time: 8:30 am to 4:00pm

Location: Mid-York Library system Offices, Utica, New York

Class Description:

As libraries are continually asked to do more with less, time has become an increasingly valuable part of this equation.

In this course, students will practice techniques that will help them achieve more effective use of their time so that they can direct their energy towards the activities that will further their professional and personal goals.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Articulate goals Analyze how energy and time are currently allocated Identify elements of a personal work style that contribute to an effective use of time Assemble a collection of time-management tools and strategies that can be used to take control of time. Create an action plan for time-management processes Identify ways to evaluate and improve efforts

The CLRC staff extends Happy Holiday wishes to our members and their families. Member News ****************************************************************** Syracuse University Library has recently acquired the papers of Morris Lapidus, trendy architect of several well known hotels in Miami, including the Fontainebleau.

The donated papers include a collection of his photographs dating back to the 1920s, conceptual drawings, manuscript drafts of his written works and correspondence with mystery writer Ellery Queen.

Architects Marcel Breuer, William Lescaze, Richard Neutra and designers Russel Wright and Walter Dorwin Teague also have collections in the SU Special Collections Research Center. ****************************************************************** The Madison-Oneida BOCES School Library System (SLS) recently received a $20,000 grant towards their “Ignite the Common Core with Library of Congress Primary Resource Documents” project. The grant is partly sponsored by the Library of Congress’ Teaching with Primary Sources, Eastern Region Program and is being overseen by Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania.

The project will allow teams of school librarians and teachers to receive training and hands-on experience in developing lesson plans that incorporate the Common Core. The teams will then pilot these lessons in the classroom. Teams of pre-service teachers from Syracuse University and will also participate in the project. Participants will have access to all Library of Congress primary sources.

SLS Coordinator Diana Wendell will serve as the project manager. Barbara Stripling, a professor of library and information science at Syracuse University’s iSchool will serve as the project consultant.

******************************************************************* Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, Herkimer County, has recently been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The monastery has a printing press, bookstore, 30,000 volume library and beautiful iconographs on the walls of the church. CONGRATULATIONS! ******************************************************************* Bonnie Kisselstein, librarian at the Baldwinsville Public Library’s local history room, received the Ruth Connell award for her years of excellent service to the B’ville community and genealogy seekers.

Bonnie has served on the CLRC Archival Services committee and is the Town of Lysander Historian.

Presenting the award is Marilyn Laubacher, Director of the library.

****************************************************************** Onondaga Free Library is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary! The library opened on December 3, 1961 as a single room and has now expanded into a beautiful facility housing a large meting room, inviting children’s area, lots of natural light and a cozy fireplace and snack area. Susan Morgan, Director of the library has plans to expand services to include a consumer health resource center. We love our library!

St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica celebrated its 145th anniversary Monday, December 12th. A Founder’s Day service was held in the chapel and awards were given to two outstanding contributors to the Center; the Oneida-Lewis Chapter of NYSARC provides educational, vocational and family support to individuals with developmental disabilities, and Barb Zumpano, a 40-year employee of St. E’s for her loyalty and hard work. Keep up the good work! ******************************************************************* SRC has established a one-on-one mentoring program with the Syracuse City School District called Corporate Campus Academic Mentoring program (CCAMP). The program was developed to raise academic performance in the math and sciences. Eighth-grade students from the Syracuse City schools will travel to the SRC offices to spend time with volunteer mentors for about an hour each week.

“Our employees will benefit from this program as much as the students.” said Paul Tremont, president of SRC.

Nine regional archivists work through the NY3Rs library systems or through historical service agencies.

They are available to: Coordinate historical records training workshops Work with regional organizations, businesses, ethnic and racial groups, libraries, archives and museums to ensure the identification of, permanent care for, and availability of historical records for previously under-documented groups and topics Raise public awareness of the importance of historical records, especially for under-documented groups and topics Work with repositories and organizations regionally to seek local, state, and federal funding for pro- jects to support historical records programming Provide advice to historical records repositories to strengthen their programs.

Jeffrey W. Cannell, NYS Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Education and Acting State Librarian announced that 1.65 million children and teens throughout New York State participated in the Summer Reading Program at their local libraries. This is a statewide increase of almost 10% over 2010.

A hearing on public library funding was held recently in Albany. Other members of the committee listening to testimonies were Assemblyman Robert Reilly, committee chair, (Colonie) and Assemblymembers Thomas Abinanti (Westchester) and Philip Palmesano (Steuben).

Debby Emerson (CLRC), Wanda Bruchis (MYLS) and Darby O’Brien (Utica Public Library) were among those at the hearing. It was a thumbs up session!
