2014-2015 WAS A YEAR OF GROWTH AND CHANGE In June 2014, we broke ground for The Turnstone of Tomorrow “Big Dream” project, now known as the Plassman Athletic Center. The new 125,000-square-foot facility houses four collegiate-sized courts, a 230-meter indoor track, and bleacher seating for 500-plus people. The center also includes a concession stand and bistro seating area, administrative offices, conference rooms, a 5,000-square-foot fitness center with group exercise rooms, a large warm-water therapy pool, and fully accessible bathrooms, Mike Mushett locker rooms, and showers. The mother of one of our clients actually teared up when she saw that her son, who is a power chair user, will be able to easily access the bathroom stalls and showers. Kudos to the “Turnstone Family” that made this dream come true! The Plassman Athletic Center was dedicated on September 12, 2015. In the Sports and Recreation Department, Turnstone became a Gold Level Paralympic Sport Club in December 2014. We’re one of only three sport clubs to reach this level among the 200-plus participating agencies in the nation. Also, Turnstone further developed its relationship with the Association of Blind Athletes and entered into a memorandum of understanding to become the “home” of the Men’s National Goalball Program and the USA’s Center of Excellence for the sport. An ad hoc committee of the board continues to work on housing and meal support for the athletes who moved to Turnstone in October 2015. In January 2015, Turnstone CEO Nancy Louraine retired after 24 years of faithful service to the organization. Prior to Nancy’s retirement, the board of directors formulated a search and transition committee to begin the process of hiring and transitioning a new CEO. A nationwide search and interview process successfully identified and transitioned the new CEO (yours truly), and I began my tenure as just the fourth CEO in Turnstone’s 72-year history on January 5, 2015.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 The Kimbrough Early Learning Center (KELC) had a very successful year with the all-day child-care and early-education format. Working parents of children with disabilities have embraced this program and are now asking about after-school care for their older children, who are ineligible for the program on their 13th birthday. This is an opportunity that Turnstone will be exploring in the coming year. The Adult Day Services (ADS) programs continue to run at full throttle, highlighted by the influx of new clients. Plans are in the works for extensive renovations in the ADS space finishing in the fall of 2015. Highlights include adding an accessible kitchen and a larger activity area, staff offices, a sick room, and renovated space for a memory care program. Overall satisfaction increased for total agency and five of the key programs. We exceeded our good to great goal this year for the agency with 91 percent stating they are very satisfied with Turnstone’s services. Two of the programs—KELC and Pediatric Therapy also exceeded with 94 percent and 90 percent, respectively, being very satisfied, an increase over last year for both. Case Management increased substantially from last year 77 percent to 84 percent very satisfied, and Adult Therapy also increased from 84 percent to 86 percent. I’m in the midst of my 11th month as Turnstone’s CEO. The experience has been intense, exhilarating, educational—everything that I thought it would be and more. The board of directors, staff, program supporters—and most importantly—the more than 2,100 clients we served in 2014–15 have been terrific in welcoming my wife, Becky, and me and introducing us to Turnstone and Fort Wayne. I understand now what the “Turnstone Family” is all about. Thank you to all!

Best regards,

CREATING POSSIBILITIES 10 11 THE TURNSTONE OF TOMORROW Turnstone celebrated a major milestone on September 12, 2015, with the opening of the Plassman Athletic Center. The center was years in the making, and we couldn’t be more proud that this facility has been built to serve more people with disabilities in our community. Call today to schedule a tour! Turnstone of Tomorrow The Turnstone of Tomorrow is a 125,000-square-foot expansion that focuses on meeting the ever-growing need for opportunities in adaptive sports and recreation, aquatics, and health and wellness. The cornerstone is a 75,000-square-foot field house. The culmination of the project, the Plassman Athletic Center, has enabled Turnstone to expand its services and provide more access to fitness and sports-related activities for children and adults. Participation in these activities is essential to improving independence and overall well-being of people with disabilities. Adaptive sports and recreation complex The field house includes a 230-meter indoor track, four collegiate-sized basketball courts, and a mezzanine for seating and conference rooms. While these facilities are sports-centric, the entire community of people with disabilities can enjoy recreation and fitness in this complex. Accessible health and wellness center Demand for health and wellness facilities designed to meet the unique needs of people with disabilities is growing rapidly. Turnstone’s expansion doubled the size of its existing Health and Wellness Center. Larger facilities have allowed us to add more specialized equipment and disability-specific programming, such as group classes for stroke survivors, adaptive Pilates, and adaptive yoga. Warm-water pool for aquatic therapy Turnstone built a larger warm-water pool equipped with a lift and a zero-depth wheelchair ramp that can be used for pain management, exercise, and specialized aquatic programs for children and adults. Importantly, this new pool is large enough to offer group classes. Turnstone is well on its way to becoming the nation’s gold standard for empowering individuals with disabilities. As the center of a community of care, Turnstone will raise the stature of Fort Wayne, create a whole new market for visitors and tourists, and help spur economic growth throughout the region. Expanding the facilities to accommodate international growth in Paralympics and adaptive sports programs is essential to achieving these aspirations.
