Round 10 - 11th June 2012 26 Round 10 - 11th June 2012 7 www.sydneyafl.com.au www.sydneyafl.com.au FORWARD FOCUS FOR THE STUDENTS The landscape has changed for Sydney University with their senior side competing in the NEAFL Eastern Conference for the first time this year but the club is still hungry for success in the AFL Sydney competition. That is the view of Sydney University President, Chas Wilkinson. However, he admits the focus has shifted with admission into the second-tier competition. “Obviously our focus this year so far has been pushing towards the NEAFL experience,” Wilkinson said. “Looking at local football, we want to respect the AFL Sydney competition and that means developing players through our Premier Division side to go on and play NEAFL. “Ultimately, we want to be pushing in a two to three year period for premierships locally.” Like Sydney Hills Eagles, the Students’ have had to build on last year’s list to strengthen the club’s depth, and Wilkinson has been pleased with the club’s progress in this area. “It has meant bringing in a of new players to the club but more importantly we have given a large number of returning players the opportunity to build into that NEAFL season,” he said. “Our High Performance Program has taken real momentum this year with over 30 players committing to a four-day program led by Daniel Gilmore (former Fremantle Docker). “We want to create the very visible pathway, and the opportunity for our young players to push through from Colts to Premier Division and to NEAFL.” The year will not be without its challenges either, not just on the field- according to Wilkin- son. “This season is a massive year of development for our footballers..and for our club admini- stration and management,” he said. “We want to be competitive through year one and execute our structures. “Looking into the future, we want to return to finals football, attracting some new talent to improve our standard of football through Premier Division.” Wilkinson’s focus is not just on the NEAFL and Premier Division sides when it comes to suc- cess. “At a lower level, we want to bridge the gap between Premier Division and our Division Two side so a premiership through our lower grades, and aspire for promotion to Division One would be our goal,” he said. The investment is all in the aim of being an attractive club for new and existing players. “We want to become the recognised club of choice for AFL football in Sydney, be it through Sydney AFL or the NEAFL experience,” Wilkinson noted. “We obviously want to invest in local talent and give local talent the opportunity through being the attractive club of choice to play locally and push through to the state level of NEAFL football.”
