Current Situation: Monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and weak to moderate elsewhere over North Bay. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna receded further at all points except at Aricha. The Ganges-Padma continued rising at all points. The Meghna at Bhairab Bazar continued rising. Small rivers surrounding Dhaka and continued rising. Inundation of low lying areas in the eastern part of Dhaka city is likely to be aggravated.

RAINFALL AND RIVER SITUATION SUMMARY AS ON AUGUST 03, 2007.

FLOOD OUTLOOK • The Brahmaputra-Jamuna receded further at all points except at Aricha and is flowing 19 cm, 48 cm, 65 cm, 113 cm & 126 cm above danger level at Noonkhawa, Chilmari, Bahadurabad, Serajganj & Aricha respectively. • The river is likely to start falling at Aricha from tomorrow. Small rivers (Dharla, Teesta, Jamuneswari, Ghagot & karatoa) in northern part of the country are also in falling trend. • The prevailing flood situation in northern districts (Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Rangpur & ) and north-eastern districts (Netrokona, Sunamganj & ) has started improving and are likely to improve gradually further. But the situation in the districts of Jamalpur, Serajganj, & Tangail may remain unchanged and expected to start improving from tomorrow. • The Ganges-Padma continued rising at all points and is flowing 150 cm & 106 cm above danger level at Goalundo and Bhagyakul respectively. Monsoon activity is vigorously active over Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal & Sub Himalayan West Bengal (Ganges basin in India). Forecast for the river is likely to swell further at a lower rate in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs. • The kaliganga at Taraghat is still in rising trend and is flowing 139 cm above danger level. The river is likely to rise further in the next 24, 48 & 72 hrs.

• As a result, the prevailing flood situation in the districts of Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur and Dohar & Nawabganj of Dhaka are likely to aggravate further. • The Meghna at Bhairab Bazar continued rising and is flowing 62 cm above danger level this morning. The river is likely to rise further and inundation of low-lying areas in the districts of Narshingdi, , Kishoreganj, and Narayanganj will be continued further. • Small rivers surrounding Dhaka and Narayanganj continued rising and the Balu at Demra, the Lakhya at Narayanganj, the Turag at Mirpur and the Tongi Khal at Tongi are flowing above danger level by 19 cm, 30 cm, 22 cm & 18 cm respectively. The Buriganga at Dhaka is likely to cross danger level by next 72/96 hrs. • Inundation of low lying areas in the eastern part of Dhaka city is likely to be aggravated.

UNDP INITIATIVE

UNDP is now operationlising UK Government’s assistance in responding to disaster affected population in the worst affected districts. The pre-qualified NGO partners of UNDP are now working closely with the field administration in distributing emergency relief assistance to the targeted beneficiaries. Already distribution has started on 3rd August in Serajgonj and Shariatpur districts by local partner NGOs, NDP and SDS respectively. In coordination with the local administration, NDP is distributing relief assistance to a total of 1000 affected families in Sadar upazila while SDS is covering 1000 affected families in nine unions of three upazials, Jajira, naria and Bhedergonj in . The relief assistance will cover Chira (flattened rice), Molasses, Mosquito net, Carbolic soap, Sharee, lunge, gamcha, WPT, ORS, candle, match box etc.
