St John Fisher Catholic High School

Newsletter 17 9 June 2017

Dear Parent / Carer

I hope that you all have had a good half term break. Students have returned to another busy week of examinations. They are going well and the students are showing a great deal of stamina to get through the vast number of assessments they have had to do.

Please continue to encourage and support them in their revision.

As you know, Mrs Langstaff has had the position of Acting Head of School while I have been Executive Headteacher at Easingwold School. They are close to appointing a substantive head at Easingwold so my time there will soon come to an end. I have mentioned before that St John Fisher, with St Aidan’s are large Teaching Schools working across the region training teachers, providing professional development and supporting other schools. This means that I work as a National Leader of Education to help schools around the country. I will be taking a more substantial role in our teaching school and supporting others. As I leave Easingwold, I will be working one or two days a week at Graham School in Scarborough.

I have put a head of school in post at Graham and the St John Fisher Governors have asked Mrs Langstaff to continue as a substantive Head of School, and I will be working as Executive Head. This has been the arrangement for the last year and the school has continued to flourish. I am looking forward to continuing this working arrangement with Mrs Langstaff and the rest of the school team.

The next few weeks continue to be extremely busy. Please keep up to date by visiting our website. As always, thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely

Mr R A Pritchard Headteacher

St John Fisher Catholic High School

June 2017

Dear Parent/Carer

There are many pressures facing young people and our job as teachers, like you as parents, is to try and give them the tools to make the right choices in life both academically and personally. As schools, we all try to do this in different ways whether through pastoral systems or PSHCE programmes. One issue that has become more prominent in recent years is that of drug use. Young people arguably have more access to illegal substances than in previous years and the advent of ‘legal highs’ has only complicated matters further.

As a group of schools within the Harrogate area, we want to ensure that our schools are safe places and at the same time support yourselves and our young people regarding this issue. Following an initial parental support session at St John Fisher Catholic High School in April, to further heighten awareness Police would like to come into our Harrogate schools with a sniffer dog. All parents and students will be notified in advance of an initial visit.

Please be reassured however, that this in no way means that we are seeking to criminalise young people, but we are seeking to educate. We know that some young people may experiment and take risks, but we believe that this initiative can act as part of our ongoing support to guide them into making better choices for their lives beyond school.

Yours sincerely

Miss E Lambden Deputy Headteacher

Sixth Form Business Enterprise Team

Congratulations to the Sixth Form Business Enterprise Team who won the North Yorkshire final on 10 May and are now through to the regional final for the whole of Yorkshire which will take place in Sheffield.

In addition to that, at the awards night Sally Lane, History Teacher at SJF who leads the Enterprise Team also won an award which was called "Give a teacher an apple" or words to that effect. She won this prize for her dedication to business enterprise and for her commitment to the teams over the years and for this team doing so well. It's great news for her and ends her career nicely.

Year 10 Cambridge University Trip

In April, a group of twenty five Year 10 High Starters were invited to visit the and to stay in Fitzwilliam College. We received a fantastic welcome and were very well looked after with great accommodation and lots of excellent food! The students learnt a great deal about the application process and were given a tour of Fitzwilliam and our link college St Catharine’s. We enjoyed an entertaining lecture on veterinary science and even managed to squeeze in a guided punt on the river Cam where we learnt all about the history of the university. The students were very positive about the whole experience and only sorry that they could not stay for longer.

Maths Challenge

The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year old UK school students. Students have 60 minutes to answer 25 varied multiple-choice mathematical problems. Over 200,000 students from around the UK entered the Challenge with the top 6% receiving a gold award, the next 13% receiving silver, and the next 21% bronze.

Intermediate Maths Challenge

Last term some of our Y9, Y10 and Y11 students took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge and they performed extremely well. Our students managed to achieve 4 gold awards, 27 silver awards and 26 bronze awards.

News from the Science Desk – June 2017

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.

Albert Einstein

Year 7 Have you booked your place?! A Yorkshire Wildlife Park visit confirmed for Tuesday 18th July. £18.00 and appears on parentpay.

There will be an end of Year test during the week commencing 26 June, specific topic details will be released to pupils within the next week. This will help us divide the year in to new, mixed sets, which are not streamed, but will give pupils the opportunity of working with those from other forms.

Year 8

There will be an end of Year test w/c 19 June, to avoid issues around/after Ford Castle trip, specific topic details and dates have been issued to pupils to help them prepare. This will help us divide the year in to new, streamed sets on each side of the year. We continually assess setting across Year 9 and are happy for movement between groups, where evidence shows this is necessary. Generally, the two top groups in each side of the year will supply the majority of those who go on to pursue Separate Sciences.

Revision Material for Year 7 and 8 Collins KS3 Revision Science ISBN 978-0-00-756282-4 CGP Key Stage Three Science - The Workbook ISBN 978-1-84146-239-4

The two books above can be obtained for a combined price of £7.50 from the Science prep room, and will allow pupils to consolidate their understanding in addition to the support material and worksheets for the whole key stage in the KS3 area of the VLE. We have now put these on parent pay also, should you choose this option, please print out the relevant screen and send in with your son/daughter to collect the books.

The VLE does NOT require a log in, please follow the links that are open to all members of the public from the school website.

Year 9

Revision Guides and Workbook together for Combined Science (£10), and Revision Guide and Workbook for each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics (£4 each) are now available. If you are unsure as to which is the most suitable then the class teacher will be able to advice accordingly. To avoid pupils picking up the incorrect books these have not as yet been available via Parent pay but at the time of writing I am reviewing this).

End of Year Test dates are as follows: Monday 19th June Biology Tuesday 20th June Chemistry Wednesday 21st June Physics

Specific topic details have been issued to the pupils. Each test has been written to last approximately 45 minutes, to provide the extra time that some pupils require. The results of these tests will help us divide the year in to new, streamed sets for the beginning of Y10.

This will give us an indication of those who should pursue separate science and those for whom combined science is more appropriate and set for Y10 accordingly.

However we will test pupils in Y10, around Christmas, and again at this current time of year and will make set changes where evidence supports this. Year 10

Year 10 have now received their mock grades. Grades achieved in the mocks, in most cases are unlikely to match that of pupils’ end of key stage target and should be taken as the growth, progress and effort that they will need to put in between now and next summer. We are aware that some pupils fail to treat ‘mock’ examinations with the dedication that we all hope they will approach their GCSEs next year.

We have identified suitable revision guides and work books for the new curriculum. We will carry a rolling stock of books that are suitable for Revision Guide and Workbook together for Combined Science (£10), and Revision Guide and Workbook for each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics (£4 each). If you are unsure as to which is the most suitable then the class teacher will be able to advice accordingly.

Pupils will continue to have access to Kerboodle which will provide on-line text books supporting the new specification together with a suite of further resources which are very useful if accessed. Please contact me if there are any issues regarding logging on.

Year 11

Continue to REVISE!!

We are now entering the closing stages of GCSE. All pupils will have now completed the course content, or be in the final phases, such that they can now REVISE.

 REVISE using the appropriate revision guides from the Science prep room at £2.50 per book, and can ask their classroom teacher as to which would be the most appropriate to obtain.

 Should pupils wish to REVISE using hard copies of the existing specification text books we have a limited supply of these that we can supply for £10 for all three books, on a first come first served basis.

 REVISE using past papers available on our VLE, or from the AQA website.

 REVISE using Kerboodle.

 REVISE using Getrevising.co.uk

 REVISE by coming to the sessions at lunchtime and after school.

 REVISE by coming to the sessions that will be offered prior to each examination

Library Please be aware that as well as current text books and reference books, that the library also carries the following publications for those that may wish to read around science based topics. These include:

Which subjects can give me the most options at University?

Many courses at university level build on knowledge and skills which you will gain while still at school.

Where this is the case, universities need to make sure that all the students they admit have prepared themselves in the best way to cope with their chosen course. For this reason, some university courses may require you to have studied a specific subject prior to entry, others may not. However, there are some subjects that are required more often than others. These subjects are sometimes referred to as facilitating subjects.

Subjects that can be viewed as facilitating subjects are:

• Mathematics and Further Mathematics

• English Literature

• Physics

• Biology

• Chemistry

• Geography

• History

• Languages (Classical and Modern)

You don’t necessarily need to have studied three facilitating subjects at A-level. Some courses require one or two facilitating subjects, whilst for other courses there are no specific subject requirements.

If you don’t know what you want to study then it’s a really good rule of thumb that taking two facilitating subjects will keep a wide range of degree courses open to you.

VLE On the KS3 area of the VLE are support materials, the first of the support materials is an interactive booklet and requires students to log on using their school log on, and a password of ‘password’ until changed, the second of which provides summary/revision sheets for the appropriate topics.

1.Click on either of these two tabs on the school website.

2.Scroll down and click on Student VLE:

3.Scroll down to Science

4.Click on the subject area that you would like to explore.

5.The KS3 area has two large resources supporting the whole of Y7 and Y8.

The interactive book requires a log in which is the same as students’ email address (Year of start at SJF, first 5 surname letters, initial – e.g. 09TanneR), with password set as password until changed. There have been some technical issues with some PC software issues for this resource, so if there are any problems do use the 2nd resource.

The Science revision sheets do not require a login, and can be printed out, with the answers at the end of the resource.

6.The GCSE area is now divided in to:

7.From here you can access the material relevant to the area of study, as well as the link to Kerboodle (for Y9, Y10 and Y11)

To log on:

Username: Initial followed by surname (e.g. rtannersmith) Password: Initial followed by surname again (you will be prompted to change this once logged on). Centre no: qjq1 (QJQ1 –in lower case)

Revision Apps In this day of portable devices, you may like to explore the following revision applications: Test and Learn Science GCSE AQA. AQA Core Science GCSE textbook.
