Shabbat Afternoon D’var Torah : Rabbi Yosef Weinstock 5:15pm Gemara Shiur on Bava Metzia (in Hebrew) Beit Midrash The Halacha is very clear that a sukkah is kosher only if the schach blocks out a majority of the sunlight- Tzilta Merubah Me’Chamta- which means that inside the sukkah there must be 5:30pm Daf Yomi Library more shade than sunlight. Chazal have attributed many philosophical meanings to this legal 5:45pm Rabbi Weinstock’s class. “Rav Moshe Main Sanctuary requirement. Sitting in the sukkah is supposed to remind us of the ever-present protection Feinstein on Kohelet” that we experience from Hashem. The Zohar teaches that when we sit in our sukkahs we should try to experience, or at least appreciate, the Tzila D’Hemnutah, the protection that G- 6:30pm Minchah Main Sanctuary d provides that in return strengthens our faith in Him. It is interesting to note that just as 6:30pm Teen Minchah Room 5 shade symbolizes G-dliness, sunlight can represent the antithesis of G-dliness. According to Maimonides, the sun was the first being other than G-d that was worshipped by human After Minchah Halacha Chaburah with Rabbi Adam Sukkah Frieberg beings. The worship of the sun began a downward spiral that ultimately led to a decrease in recognition of Hashem among all humans. As we sit in our temporary and flimsy huts we are After Minchah Parsha Shiur with Rabbi Yossi Jankovits Beit Midrash reminded of our dependence on Hashem and therefore are careful to minimize the presence of sunlight. No Gemara Shiur with Rabbi Jonathan Hirsch this Shabbat However there is another Halacha associated with our schach. Just as it can’t be too thin, it also shouldn’t be too thick. The Halacha states that one should be able to see the stars Seudah Dvar Torah by Rabbi Gabi Wittlin Sukkah through the schach. Some poskim understand this requirement to mean that one should be Shlishit able to see the stars from at least one vantage point in the sukkah. Q: What is so important Teen Seudah With Rav Natan Rooms 3 & 4 about the stars that they are required viewing from our sukkahs? Shlishit One of the most famous paintings in the world is “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. Immediately Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 5 min. class Library In describing his inspiration for this painting Van Gogh wrote “When I have a terrible need after Maariv of- shall I say the word- religion- then I go out and paint the stars.” Although van Gogh was mentally ill, this statement has a lot of truth to it. Stars, both their physical existence as well as their symbolic meaning, have been fertile ground for religious interpretation and Dvar Tefila inspiration. Hallel Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto in his philosophical work Derech Hashem writes that the “All men are liars” (Artscroll Siddur pg. 636) Rav Soloveitchik explained that the term “liars” here should not be taken to mean that all stars serve as the pipeline through which heavenly influences are brought into the physical people intentionally distort the truth. Rather, it means that man’s inner world is not always world. Nevertheless, stars are far removed from our reality. The closest star to our planet is the same as his external presentation. There is a hidden element to people’s personalities; four light years away. In Parshat Breishit, the pasuk tells us about the creation of the stars one that others may hardly know. One that he himself may hardly know. “All men are only after emphasizing the creation of the sun and moon. Rav Hirsch comments that the liars” – not because they want to lie, but because they are often unaware of what their truth really is. I may think that I know my neighbor. I know what time he leaves for work and importance of stars for the earth is less recognizable. Stars play a much more central role as a what he does professionally. I have watched his conduct and am acquainted with his Jewish symbol and in our own imaginations. habits. I have overheard some conversations, so I know his concerns and his interests. But According to Rav Soloveitchik we must be able to see the stars from our sukkah in do I really know him? Not really. In many ways he remains a mystery, which no one order to keep our horizons broad. The Rav explained that man's problem is that his personal except God can penetrate. This line from Hallel should help us appreciate how little we know, and how much only God can know. This line should also encourage us to be less schach obscures his vision. It prevents a person from seeing the world, from seeing the full judgmental. For even when we think we know someone, chances are we really don’t, grandeur of Hashem. Each person believes that he has discovered the world's deepest secrets certainly not enough to judge him. and fancies himself all knowing and all capable. Each of us sits in his or her own tiny booth (Based on Koren Mesoret HaRav Siddur, pg. 769) with such thick personal schach that we cannot fathom the existence of stars, of something beyond our own worldview. By looking at the stars, we remind ourselves that there is a Hoshana Rabah—Sunday morning Shacharit times: whole universe out there full of possibilities and promise. 7:00 & 9:00am in the Main Sanctuary 8:00am in the Beit Midrash

Israel and Gulf States Working on ‘Historic Pact’ to End Conflict Between Them Israel is reportedly negotiating with several Gulf states on a “non-aggression pact” between them as they face off against an increasingly emboldened Iran. The deal, which Israel’s Channel 12 News described as potentially “historic,” aims to put an end to the state of conflict between the Gulf states and Israel, and reportedly provides for friendly relations, cooperation in a variety of fields, and no war or incitement against each other. Advancing the Israeli initiative, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz met on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly last month with several foreign ministers from Arab Gulf states, as reported Saturday night. On September 23, Katz tweeted that he had held talks with an unnamed counterpart from an Arab country, with which Israel does not have formal relations, and said they discussed “ways to deal with the Iranian threat” and a process for boosting “civilian cooperation.” Katz presented his Gulf counterparts with a draft text of the intended pact, which was drawn up by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the TV report said. It reportedly highlights the opportunity to advance common interests in the context of the threat posed by Iran, and is drafted in accordance with principles of international law.
