PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In 1998 the Miralles Tagliabue EMBT architectural studio won the bid to design the new building of the Scottish Parliament. Located in Holyrood, within the proclaimed area World Heritage of the Old City of Edinburgh, the building claims to be a poetic union between the Scottish landscape, its people, its culture and the city of Edinburgh.

The proposal generated great enthusiasm due to its organic capacity to combine existing elements with new technologies through the contemporary and unique language of the EMBT architectural studio. The project’s development centered on reflecting the characteristics of the country and its inhabitants through a new way of building that was directly linked to the land itself.

The new building of the Scottish Parliament gives response to the specific requirements of the activity policy and, at the same time, to the possible mental representation that the citizen has of the Parliament. This second aspect is what the Miralles Tagliabue EMBT wanted as a characteristic element of the project and as a distinctive feature of the Scottish Parliament regarding historical buildings of the different European parliamentary institutions.

Therefore, the form which was selected is not that of a traditional building located in a park or in a garden with classical dimensions and a certain monumental shape, but pretends to be a key element In a context of wider public places. PROJECT DETAILS
