While jazz musicians had long drawn an essential portion of their repertoire from the Broadway stage, this jazz version of Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady was something new in 1956. Drummer Shelly Manne leads a trio with pianist Andre Previn and bassist Leroy Vinnegar here, and they bring a lightly sophisticated touch to the material, which had debuted just a few months before the recording. It's a testament to the quality of score and players alike that the tunes already feel like standards in their hands, both in the arrangements and in the solos. "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" is the shimmering ballad that one might expect, but the trio applies a similar approach with almost equally successful results to the unlikely "With a Little Bit of Luck." Tempos are pushed toward the bop dimension for "Ascot Gavotte" and "Danced All Night," and Previn acquits himself well, generating imaginative lines. Vinnegar is a rock-solid timekeeper, while Manne provides brisk brush work, a lively beat, and creative accents. He's not obtrusive, but Manne's superb drumming is a focal point in this trio, highlighted by the 20-bit K2 super coding. --Stuart Broomer

rock bands covering Willie Nelson songs. For the most part, the idea works very well. They managed to find songs that fit the artists pretty well (mostly using lesser known Willie Nelson songs). Some of my favorites are by L7, Supersuckers, The Presidents of the United States, Jello Biafra and the Reverend Horton Heat. But the real highlights are by elder statesmen Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Now, Johnny and Waylon may not fit into the "renegade rock band" mold, but when the results are this good, who cares? Anyway, the performances by the two old country outlaws are quite different than what you would expect from the two gentlemen. Cash is accompanied by a feedback drenched guitar on his track, and Jennings is accompanied by just an acoustic guitar. Of course, their vocals are as great as you would expect from these legends. Like I said in the beginning, this is one of the best tribute albums I ever heard.

CD784.72 COODE COODER, Ry 784 Bop Till You Drop / Ry Cooder. - [s.l.] : Warner-Wea, 1990. - 1 CD : stereo ; 12 cm Compact disk.

Ry Cooder, more than anyone who has touched the pop music scene, has done a great service to music lovers by resurrecting nearly-forgotten genres of indiginous American music. From his early inspiration by Hawaiian slack-key guitar master Gabby Pahinui and the gritty, passionate Sleepy John Estes, to very early jazz forms to Tex/Mex to gospel, bluesy mandolin, Depression-era worksongs, the list is very long. But you cannot accuse him of being a dilettante, because he is extremely respectful of all the traditions he explores, remaining true to their spirits while somehow adding his own distinctive imprint. His interests have ranged abroad in more recent years to India, East Africa and, most famously, Cuba. Bop Till You Drop explores neglected corners of the rhythm 'n' blues genre. I am a 30-year enthusiastic fan of Ry Cooder's work, and I think this is one of his best. Start with "Down in Hollywood," as tight a piece of funk as you will find. The peerless Jim Keltner anchors the rhythm section with his drum work that manages to be aggressive and tightly restrained as well. Chaka Khan's backup vocal is searing. Cooder's trademark combination of sly humor and get-down musicianship make this song a classic. The gospel-based Trouble You Can't Fool Me and I Can't Win are masterpieces of vocal harmony. I Can't Win is as poignant an unrequited love song as the best Motown ever produced. The Very Thing is once again vintage Cooder, with its effortless, flawless backbeat rhythm, stunning vocal harmonies and just-right instrumental work. The man knows how to put an album together. The cover of the old Ike and Tina Turner number Don't Mess Up a Good Thing is better than the original.

CD784.72 COODE COODER, Ry 784 Chavez Ravine / Ry Cooder. - [s.l.] : Nonesuch, 2005. - a1 CD : stereo ; 12 cm Compact Disc.

Ry Cooder might have been tempted to bill this as the Chavez Ravine Social Club. After generating such popular and critical interest in Cuban music of decades past with the Buena Vista Social Club, Cooder applied a similar approach closer to home, extending his fascination with the Mexican-American culture that flourished in 1940s and '50s Los Angeles. The result is an CD that sounds like it's aspiring to be something far more ambitious: a DVD, a theatrical production, even a time machine. Cooder and a cast of seminal Chicano artists present a song cycle that conjures an era of UFOs, the Red Scare, and political machinations that leveled the Chavez Ravine barrio to lure the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles. In his celebration of a vibrant community that doesn't know it's on the verge of displacement, Cooder enlists Thee Midnighters vocalist Little Willie G. (whose songwriting collaboration with Los Lobos's David Hidalgo on "Onda Callejara" highlights the album). and Pachuco patriarchs Don Tosti and Lalo Guerrero, with the latter reviving his dancefloor favorite "Los Chucos Suaves." The accordion of Flaco Jimenez adds conjunto flavor to "Barrio Viejo." Throughout the album, Cooder plays a typically tasteful, understatedly virtuosic guitar, assumes a variety of vocal roles--including a cool Chet Baker homage in duet with pianist Jacky Terrason on "In My Town"--and provides the provocative social context

CD784.72 DIAMO DIAMOND, NEil 784 Home Before Dark / Neil Diamond. - [s.l.] : Columbia, 2008. - 1 CD : stereo ; 12 cm

ISBN 886972807829 Since when does an artist who has been toiling away in the industry for 5 decades challenge his entire catalog by releasing what may be the two strongest albums in his illustrious career? As good as 12 Songs is, it's possible that Home Before Dark may even surpass its achievements. Whether it does so will depend on whether 12 Songs was too stark, too stripped-down, for the listener. Without moving remotely close to the bombast of the 80s, Diamond and Rubin have filled out the sound Home Before Dark with more instrumentation, which may please those for whom 12 Songs was too intimate.

Not for this listener. 12 Songs and Home Before Dark both showcase Diamond's greatest asset: his ability as a songwriter, and in both cases we are presented with the most solid, accomplished cycle of songs since the period that gave us "Moods" and "Stones."

Home Before Dark is a towering achievement, possibly even moreso than 12 Songs, as it shows without a doubt that 12 Songs was no fluke. Neil Diamond may be no spring chicken but he's at the height of his power as an artist. I guarantee you that if you ever loved Neil in the past, this album will remind you of everything you loved him for. It's truly stunning.

The killer house band, with Jim Keltner on drums and Nils Lofgren on guitar, shifts from swing to reggae to boogie rock, and leaves the Nelson Family Band, fine as they are, in the dust. Ol' Willie may go froggy on an otherwise gorgeous duet with a Carole King, he may be a no-show on Toots Hibbert's frenetic "Pressure Drop," and he probably should have thought twice about letting Los Lonely Boys suck the funk from War's "Cisco Kid," but he still slings some signature Trigger riffs alongside the Holmes Brothers and matches Lucinda Williams' slow-burn emotion, phrase for soulful phrase. Either singer can crest to the top or fall back into humble harmonies in this set of ten fine duets. The songs are mostly Kimmie Rhodes originals, though Willie contributes two ("Valentine" and "It Will Always Be") with the remainder of the set coming from sources as disparate as Tom Waits (the wrote title track), Rodney Crowell and Rhodes' partner, Joe Gracey. ISBN 008817034027 An A-list of musically diverse acolytes surrounds the venerable country icon on this concert recording, which pays richer dividends than its studio-album predecessor, The Great Divide. Artists from Sheryl Crow to Norah Jones and Vince Gill to Keith Richards help celebrate one of the richest legacies in American music. Though some hit-and-miss is inevitable, the teaming with Richards, Ryan Adams, and Hank Williams III on "Dead Flowers" romps all over the Rolling Stones' original, while the duet with mentor Ray Price, who enjoyed an early hit with Nelson's "Night Life," shows a sense of history too often missing from such demographic-driven projects. Other highlights include the sweet-voiced balladry of Jones on "Lonestar" and a luminous rendition of "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain" by Gill. As for the misfires: Adams and Nelson sound like they're in different keys on Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come"; Toby Keith isn't even a poor man's Waylon Jennings on "Good Hearted Woman"; and the very idea of Matchbox Twenty singing "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" is ludicrous. Even when the material and guest vocalists don't mesh, Nelson's guitar punctuation remains an understated (and underrated) delight.

CD784.72 REA blj REA, Chris 784 The Blue Jukebox / Chris Rea [s.l.] : Jazee Blue : 2004. - 1 CD : stereo ; 12 cm Compact disc

Chris Rea is back again. Pouring out what he had hidden for more than 20 years. He is the new meaning to the blues. After his surprise masterpiece double album, "Dancing down the stony road", he is here to tell us that he wants to "Paint his jukebox blue". The album is the continuation of his Stony Road CD with the addition of some excellent Saxophones. Rea plays less guitar but properly and magically. The voice is still the king and the music is a nice accompany for lonely nights. The best cuts in my opinion are: Long is the time, hard is the road; Paint my jukebox blue and Steel river Blues. Beutiful arrangement, Jazzy bluesy mood (reflective of his JazzeeBlue label) and masterful musicianship makes The Blue Jukebox a pioneer effort in Rea's resume. The howling bluesman is born. Those are the only three reasons robust enough to explain why Chris Rea is not a household name. He is a simply superb bluesman. THE BLUE CAFE is an album worth selling the coffee table for. Rea's writing, voice, and guitar are a three-punch knockout. Yet a highlight of BLUE CAFE is the bass of Silvan Marc and the mixing and production that bring out this amazing artist's work without letting it overpower the dozen tracks that make this CD indispensible for the blues connoiseur and highly recommended for followers of serious rock and roll. The last time Bruce Springsteen gave up E Street for Folk Street, the band of fiddles, banjos, and accordions--sans audience--was recording 2006's We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions in the informality of his living room. This time the Boss takes his American-music foray to Ireland for a three-night stint on the north quay of Dublin's River Liffey. The 23 songs drawn from those performances cover most of the songs from the Pete Seeger tribute, but venture drastically into Springsteen's popular back catalog ("Atlantic City," "Highway Patrolman," "Blinded By the Light") while delving further into his affinity for multiple styles of music, from folk and blues to gospel and country. "If I Should Fall Behind" plays like a tear-jerking last call in a dimly lit pub. "Open All Night" has been shaped into pure swing, complete with pedal steel and sax. And "Jesse James," with its furious banjo, spectator handclaps, and Springsteen howl, could pass for the Pogues, circa 1985. A simultaneously released DVD uses nine cameras to capture every sweat-beaded highlight, from the tin whistle of "Further Up the Road" to an arena bursting out in a "We Shall Overcome" singalong. Although I am not a 'wild nut' type of Stones fan I saw this concert at the Orange Bowl, in Miami, and Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, et. al. are THE consumate professional showmen giving the audience more than their money's worth performance. Even though Mick may be getting a little long in the tooth for rock concerts (aren't we all) and rumours have it that Keith Richards is really dead, you could see and feel that this band loves performing, and would put together a 5 hour show if they could. The band shows up on time, (something very unusual now a days for rock star wanna be's) and rocks your socks from beginning to end, non-stop.

The DVD brought back memories of that performace and did not fall short in any respects. The video is crystal clear, sound is exact and sharp, and the editing absolutely fabulous. The director seemed to know where one would be looking during the concert and it made me feel as if I was back there again.... some of the editors of concert videos that I have seen had no clue as to where and when to focus attention during the concert .....

Although I would give 'Voodoo Lounge' concert DVD a slight edge, (I mean a very very slight edge) over Babylon, trust me, this is a must have DVD that will, like Voodoo, go out of print and you'll be buying the DVD for 50.00 bucks just to have it in your collection......

1981's "Shot of Love" is the last, hardest-rocking, and most accessible of Bob Dylan's trio of "Born-again" albums that began in 1979, and many fans call this the best of his Christian-oriented albums, all of which were (and still are) widely criticized. All the scorn and empty accusations of judgemental dogma that Dylan took may have fuelled all of the roughness and energy that packs the album, making it one of the most realistic, down-to-Earth Christian albums ever made. It's ironic that "Shot of Love" may be the easiest for non-Christian fans to enjoy, because it still has God written all over it, starting with the quote of Matthew 11:25 in the liner notes. This album is full of a sense that a God-less society is falling apart, but Dylan pulls off the task of turning the end of times/Armageddon stew into vigorous, enjoyable rockers (case in point, 'Trouble'). In the blistering title track, Dylan speaks of those who mocked his God, and desires an escape from all the condemnation he took, and from the morbid side of the world in general. 'Property of Jesus' is self-explanatory, and 'Watered Down Love' seems to speak out against organized religion blocking man's relationship with God. Amidst the rocking world-gone-wrong of 'The Groom's Still Waiting At the Altar,' Dylan assures the listener that "God has mercy on them who are slandered and humiliated," a great anthem for any weary Christian, and the feeling that the world is falling apart is evident throughout this album; 'Dead Man, Dead Man' shares the same message of an earlier song 'When You Gonna Wake Up' and describes "politics of sin" and those who "curse God with every move." On the ballad-like 'In the Summertime,' he speaks of "Fools they made a mock of sin" but things get brighter as he sings of a gift that will "be with me unto the grave, and then unto eternity." Also in this song, Dylan seems to address his audience and/or his critics; Did you respect me for what I did, Or for what I didn't do, or for keeping it hid? Did I lose my mind when I tried to get rid of everything you see?" Only two songs here don't bear a Christian-oriented message (at least one that's not as obvious as the other songs). The simplistic, sad piano-and-vocal 'Lenny Bruce' finds Dylan doing something that Christian bands today should be doing more often; Lenny Bruce was not exactly what you'd call a "Christian role model" but who says Christian music has to only give sympathy to Christian martyrs? And Bruce was a martyr in his own field, and the song named after him is a forthright, straight salute to the lost comedian. 'Heart of Mine' meanwhile is a song of self-exploration, like the closing ballad 'Every Grain of Sand,' probably the most recognized tune on the album, and a pleasantly mild end to a mostly rollicking set of songs. Here it appears that Dylan was consciously bringing an end to his "Christian era" because obviously he still had other messages to deliver. It is a poignant bridge that connects the end of the Born-again era to the beginning of the ups and downs he would take throughout the 80s. "Shot of Love" is the one album that other Christian bands should use as their blueprint; it is full of both the anger and the peace that accompany the decision to find faith. For fans of Dylan and not the faith however, it is still a welcome return to craftiness and daring that made such classics as "Bringing It All Back Home"

Watermark is one of the most intelligent, lovely albums made in the 1970s, a reminder that not all was disco or sappy ballads. Garfunkel joins Linda Ronstadt as one of the great interpreters of Webb's pensive and often demanding songs. Webb was involved in this production and it shows: the arrangements are classy and never intrusive. "Crying In My Sleep," with wonderful wordplay (watch Webb toy with the various meanings of "ran" in one of the verses), the Celtic "All My Love's Laughter" (with a little musical help from the Chieftains), and "Mr. Shuck and Jive" with its jazzy arrangement and embittered lyric. The title track features haunting imagery (Webb is an imagist like Dylan and Joni Mitchell--he tends to think in pictures), and there's a surreal quality to the arrangement on "Wooden Planes," a great song best done by B.J. Thomas. VI784 MOODY sur MOODY Blues 784 / Moody Blues. - Beograd : RTB, 1988. - 1 LP : stereo 33,3 ; 30 cm Long play gramofonska ploča. ISBN 8600278220371

After the big commercial success of their 1986 release, "," followed it up with 1988's "Sur La Mer" (or "On The Sea" in French), and while it can be said that "Sur La Mer" is basically a sequel album to "The Other Side Of Life"---glossy, polished Moodies music tailor-made for the 80's---this is an excellent Moody Blues album all the same. The proof is in the high quality of the songs, all written or co-written by singer/guitarist and singer/bassist John Lodge, including the charming Top 40 hit "I Know You're Out There Somewhere," the great rock of "River Of Endless Love," the light & breezy "No More Lies," the lovely acoustic pop of "Vintage Wine," the dancefloor grooves of "Miracle," and the brilliant album-closer, Justin Hayward's "Deep," an outstanding and surprisingly *sultry* Moody Blues number (amazingly, the band have never played it live, but it's a firm, all-time personal favorite Moodies song of mine). The only debit to "Sur La Mer" is, although still listed on the album as a band member, flautist , like he was on "The Other Side Of Life," is completely absent (once again, the band's explanation was that Ray didn't write anything for the album). But other than that, "Sur La Mer" is a highly enjoyable Moody Blues album with wonderful songs and performances from the band. It's great stuff!

Synchronicity is the last full-length studio recording from the Police, the final evolution of their sound, and the album that yielded their greatest success. It is a brilliant pop record, but it's something more, as well. The singles, particularly "Every Breath You Take," "King of Pain," and "Wrapped Around Your Finger," while pure gems by themselves, are an integral part of the album's musical and lyrical texture. As the title indicates, the album's intellectual content is inspired by C.G. Jung's psychosocial connecting principle and it manifests lyrically in some of the most evocative imagery Sting has ever created. Musically, the band defines a sonic space with arrangements that are often spare to the point of transparency. The songs are constructed from delicate arpeggios and eerie washes of guitar, sinuous keyboard lines, solid, repetitive bass figures, and the signature Stewart Copeland drum sound, all topped by Sting's voice moving through a wide range of pitch and sentiment. Synchronicity is a collection that creates and sustains a mood in the sensitive listener, a feeling that remains after the last note has died away. A benchmark album from a tremendously influential band, it will stand the test of time as a genuine classic. --Al Massa

VI784 PRESL chr PRESLEY, Elvis 784 Elvis Christmas Album : Elvis Sings Christmas Songs / Elvis Presley. - [s.l] : RCA, 1970. - 1 LP : stereo ; 30 cm Long play gramofonska ploöa.

It may seem weird to call a seasonal album "essential," but along with Phil Spector's Christmas Gift for You, this is arguably the finest rock & roll Christmas album of all time. Recorded in 1957 at the height of his artistry--when he truly could be called the King of Rock & Roll--this album demonstrates Presley having a lot of vocal fun with a variety of styles, whether it's a carol ("Silent Night") or pop standard (Gene Autry's "Here Comes Santa Claus"). He does one of the greatest versions of "White Christmas" ever recorded, basically using the Drifters' version as a blueprint--and then singing all the parts himself. His "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is definitive--but the best moments are the "new" tracks written specifically for this release, including the classic "Blue Christmas," Lieber & Stoller's "Santa Claus Is Back in Town" (one of the most sexually suggestive holiday tunes ever), and the wonderful, pop-based "Santa, Bring My Baby Back to Me." All these tracks are available on the King of Rock 'n' Roll box set--but if you don't own that, this belongs under any Christmas tree--though Elvis fans have been known to listen to tracks from this in the middle of July! VI784 PRESL elv PRESLEY, Elvis 784 Elvis Presley / Elvis Presley. - [s.l] : RCA, 1956. - 1 LP : stereo ; 30 cm Long play gramofonska ploöa.

When RCA Records purchased Elvis Presley's contract and a back catalog that numbered only five singles and a handful of outtakes from Sun Records owner Sam Phillips for $35,000, few involved could have dreamed that the modest deal would change American music forever. This 1956 collection was Presley's first proper album (and arguably rock's first great LP), a release that both broke him to a national audience and became an enduring piece of pop-cultural iconography. Anchored by take-no-prisoners covers of fellow Sun rockabilly pioneer Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes," Ray Charles's "I Got a Woman," and Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti," it's an album where Presley forcefully hammers nascent rock 'n' roll into his own sultry image. But, as the bonus track of the breakout single "Heartbreak Hotel" and performances of Sun's "Blue Moon," the country ballad "I'm Counting on You," and "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" ably attest, the 21-year-old Elvis possessed a mature, remarkable vocal range far beyond the hip-swiveling, sexually-charged hillbilly cat that was too often his caricature. A classic rock album a decade before there was such a thing--and one of Presley's most consistent and rewarding releases

After the success of Document, R.E.M. moved from college radio giants to mainstream stars. They made the move from the independent IRS label to corporate rock giant Warner Brothers. Green is their debut release for Warner Brothers. While many diehard fans felt the band sold out, R.E.M. proved that you could work in the mainstream and still maintain your integrity. Green does have a more commercial sound than their previous efforts, most notably in the big hit "Stand". With the chance to reach a larger audience, the lyrics take on a more a socially active approach. The album's title is about trying to become environmentally friendly and many of the song's deal with the government's and big business' pollution of the environment and its people. "Orange Crush" is about the damage Agent Orange caused soldiers in Vietnam and "You Are The Everything" voices concerns about the ecology. "Get Up" is a call for activism. "Pop Song 89" is a sarcastic take on their new found chart success. "World Leader Pretend" is a great song and it also marked the first song the band ever printed lyrics to. It is the only song from the album to have the lyrics included, but it such as masterful song, that aspect only enhances the power of the words. Green was a big move forward for R.E.M. as they left behind their roots and started to grow towards bigger and greater commercial and critical successes.

VI784.72 EAGLE EAGLES 784 Eagles Live / Eagles. - Zagreb : SUZY, 1980. - 2 LP : stereo ; 30 cm Long play gramofonska ploča.

Love them or hate them, the Eagles have had a huge impact on rock music. To paraphrase Ringo Starr, there are biggies and there are monsters. These guys were monsters in terms of sales, airplay and impact. Frequently accused of being misogynistic (yep, some of their stuff could be seen that way)Henley & Frey are still two of the most talented songwriting duos in music. Henley has one of the most distinctive and rich voices in rock music while Frey is an underrated singer who can easily hold his own with Henley. So how are the performances? This album (it should be noted that this had a lot of overdubbing in the studio as the band members are perfectionists)is pretty good as far as live albums go. In many respects this is no different than listening to their studio albums although some of the energy of the raw performances leak through. While they weren't noted for their spontanity in concert (their performances were always rooted in recreating the sound of the albums, the band does bring a harder edge to these performances. Joe Walsh acts as band clown on his contributions and still manages to get in some mean guitar licks (with Felder & Frey). Back up drummer Joe Vitale does a great job of helping to fill out Henley's performance.

ISBN 743214188026 The soundtrack from the film "Michael", had great music from start to finish. There were many, many songs to lift your spirits and give the precise tone of of the story. The theme of "Michael" was live life, enjoy your time while you are here. This album does not have all the music from the movie, but there are 11 selections that probably depict some of the best and most memorable moments from the film that represent that theme. The music that is included feels safe and warm. It will make you smile and may even inspire you to do great things! The tracks are not in the exact order from the film, but you'll love em all anyway. Included are Don Henley's inspiring "Through Your Hands", and if you have seen the film, you will remember that great scene, where Johnny T treats us to his moves, surrounded by all the women in the bar to the wonderful "Chain Of Fools" (Aretha Franklin). Bonnie Raitt's "Feels Like Home" feels great, and who could forget that lump in the throat evoking rendition of "What A Wonderful World" by Willie Nelson. Andie MacDowell's fun but touching "Sittin By The Side Of The Road" is included as well. It's a fabulous trip down memory lane, and feel good album. Even if you haven't seen the film, you can't go wrong with this great music. Also included are Van Morrison, The Mavericks, Randy Newman, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Al Green and Norman Greenbaum. It should be little surprise that of the three Prince of Egypt CDs, this one, which contains music actually used in the picture, is the best. The disc features songs written by Academy Award winners Stephen Schwartz and Hans Zimmer. It also showcases the always impressive vocal talents of Ofra Haza on several tracks. The disc also crams in a few singles--ranging from the solid Boyz II Men track "I Will Get There" to the average "The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe)" by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to the dismal "Through Heaven's Eyes," by K-Ci & JoJo. But ultimately, Haza steals the show on tracks like "Cry" and the gorgeous "Deliver Us," performed with Eden Riegel. Other standouts include "Playing with the Big Boys," by Steve Martin and Martin Short, and a pleasant, if not unexpected, vocal by Michelle Pfeiffer on "When You Believe."

ISBN 00881-11-394-21 With so many singers around these days, it is rare to find one that is truly distinctive, but Vince's superb tenor voice is unlike any other in country music. This collection covers the period from 1990 to 1993, when he was at the peak of his career. Actually, his peak lasted a little longer - one more album (When love finds you), after which Vince continued to make great albums without ever achieving the same level of success. The first three tracks, Never alone, Never knew lonely and When I call your name are taken from his first MCA album, When I call your name. It is still my favorite original album of Vince's music. A big disappointment for me is the omission of Oklahoma swing, a duet with Reba McEntire that was a top five country hit - big enough to qualify for this collection. Those three tracks are followed by four tracks from Vince's second MCA album, Pocket full of gold, another brilliant album. Then comes a duet with Reba, The heart won't lie. It was originally released on Reba's album, It's your call, but not on any of Vince's original albums. It is a wonderful song, even if I still prefer their earlier duet. Next come five tracks from Vince's third MCA album, I still believe in you. Some say that was his best original album and it's not difficult to see why. Actually, there's not much to choose between all Vince's albums - they were all of a consistently high quality. Completing this outstanding collection are I can't tell you why, a song that Vince recorded for the Eagles tribute album Common thread, and I will always love you, a duet with Dolly that first appeared on her Something special album.

However, we come not to bury the Mavericks' future but to praise their past. They're the strongest argument that the change in Nashville in the 1990s hasn't all been for the worst. Whether the songs lean toward country or early-60s pop-rock, they invariably have a good feel, good melody, good hooks. They ring simple and from the heart, without guile or pretence. The musicians are invariably smart, stylish and sympathetic. Their chops are undeniable but the ensemble playing makes it all work and the soloists never upstage the songs or Malo's unforgettable voice. Finally, for all the talk about the Mavericks' Latino-country fusion, it's really more pan-Caribbean than strictly Latino. This is the most festive-sounding country music ever. Everything clicks wonderfully here, but numbers that set a new standard include "Tu Solo Tu," an incredibly harmonic love ode; "Por un Amor," on the price of real love; and "Los Laureles," a song of declaration on which Ronstadt soars unbelievably high. These are old Mexican classics, played by arguably the world's best mariachi group and sung by one of North America's greatest vocal talents. ISBN 028947419822 If you are already familiar with Mercedes Sosa, you are probably elated that she has released a new album. Having turned seventy years old and of fragile health in recent years, her recordings have been spare -with live recordings filling wider gaps between those with new songs- which makes this release even a stronger reason to rejoice. As far as this album is concerned, the wait has been amply justified. Mercedes has chosen an intimate ensemble for these offerings, the accompaniment consists of musicians with whom she's played for many years, and the few instruments and austere -yet heartfelt- arrangements in each song focused on her exquisite voice and the mastery of her interpretations. To select songs for singular praise is quite difficult since every one of these tracks is magnificent, whether they are songs she's not sung before or those who she's chosen to sing again with new arrangements. That said, there are several which deserve attention and promise special delight. Among the new songs, "Corazón Libre" which is bound for addition to her long list of classics, "País," "Tonada del Otono," "Tonada del Viejo Amor" - a duet with the legendary Eduardo Falú- and "Y la Milonga lo Sabe" are stunning in their depth and simplicity. When it comes to new versions, "Todo Cambia," a song that has reached hymn-like status in Argentina since she first sung it, shines brightly. Furthermore, her choice of recording it in a slower and quieter form, brings to the fore new dimensions and nuances -at least it's true in my case- that you may not have fully appreciated before. All in all, Mercedes Sosa has made another pearl of an album, and if her voice may not always have the chant-like power of earlier recordings, it has not lost any of the heart and wisdom she's known for infusing her songs with. Whenever I listen to this album I'm reminded of the poet Stanley Kunnitz when he says "I am not done with my changes" because Mercedes is clearly not done with hers. May God bless her.

Deja Vu is CSN's best album. A big reason of this is Neil Young. CSN were great together, but when they joined with Young, the possibilities were endless. This album shows that. Crosby wrote two great songs on the album; Almost Cut My Hair and Deja Vu. Graham Nash also wrote some great songs, including one of the best songs they ever did, Teach Your Children, and also Our House. Stills and Young really shine on this album, collaborating on the great Everybody I Love You. Individually, Stills wrote such classics as Carry On and 4 + 20. Young wrote Country Girl, which is a great song, but Helpless may just top the album as the best song on it. With these four incredible songwriters on one album, how did they ever find room for Joni Mitchell's Woodstock? I don't know, but I'm glad they did, because it is a great song. This album is very essential to any fan of any of the four artists.

With the departure of their longtime keyboardist in 1978, the Moody Blues saw one major chapter in their long musical career come to a close, and, with the dawn of the 80's, it was time for the Moodies' second chapter to begin. Obviously, the band's first hurdle to get over was to get themselves a brand-new keyboardist, but who could possibly step into Mike Pinder's giant shoes? Enter Patrick Moraz, the one-time keyboardist for Yes (he played on 1976's "Relayer"). Moraz's contribution to the Moodies was NOT to play mellotron as Pinder did, but to add a more synthesized, 80's-friendly keyboard sound to the band. Some fans pondered whether or not the Moody Blues could survive without Mike Pinder, but the finished album, 1981's "Long Distance Voyager," was a HUGE success, both creatively and commercially, hitting #1 on the U.S. album chart. Mike Pinder may be missed, but there's no denying the freshness that Patrick Moraz's keyboard touch brought to the Moody Blues, and, on top of that, the band rose to the challenge and came up with some truly fantastic songs. Not only does "Voyager" feature the Moodies staples "" and "The Voice," but also such gems as John Lodge's lovely "," and Justin Hayward's gorgeous "In My World" (interestingly, both tracks clock in at exactly 7 minutes 17 seconds). Drummer Graeme Edge contributes the thunderous, steady rocker "22,000 Days," one of his very best songwriting contributions to the band, while flautist Ray Thomas wraps the album up in a playful, colorful bow with the circus-themed "Painted Smile," the poem "Reflective Smile," and the classic Moodies shuffler, "Veteran Cosmic Rocker." With "Long Distance Voyager," the Moody Blues re-invented themselves and entered the 80's with tremendous power. "Long Distance Voyager" is one of the Moodies' all-time greatest albums.

ISBN 0035627048319 It is Robinson's finest solo work, containing many strong pop-rock songs. The arrangements are solid, and Robinson's voice has never sounded more tough-but-tender. My favorite track is "Cabin Boy," a hot, sexy sailor fantasy. Without a single word that could be construed as "obscene," Robinson managed to craft as raunchy a song as I've ever heard, and then he threw in a seething piano solo for good measure. "War Baby" and "Atmospherics: Listen To The Radio" (the latter co-written by Robinson and Peter Gabriel) are also excellent. Of the bonus tracks, "More Lives Than One" is especially powerful. Also of note is "Ricky Don't Lose That Number," Robinson's rendition of Steely Dan's hit "Rikki Don't Lose That Number." Though his version is inferior to the original, it's easy to overlook any shortcomings because it is so refreshing to hear how perfectly the song works in the context of a gay relationship. Shakin' Stevens's solo career was launched in 1978 and the following decade he was the biggest selling male artist in the UK, registering four number ones, a total of eleven Top 5 and 15 Top Ten hits. It was a far cry from his earlier career when, as frontman for The Sunsets and despite a support slot with The Rolling Stones, he failed to make any chart impact at all. These recordings, done with The Sunsets, highlight the rock and roll style that was to prove vital to his later success. Effectively an excursion through some of the greatest rock and roll songs in history, it is the ideal party album. ISBN 602517236226 Countless Westerns have centered around the theme of a young turk coming into town to try to take down a legendary gunslinger. Well, for the past couple of decades, Willie Nelson has turned that imagery on its head, attracting countless younger artists eager to soak up some of his musical mojo and infuse the master's work with some of their own spirit. Moment of Forever, matches Willie with Kenny Chesney. The very idea of these seemingly disparate characters coming together is intriguing enough on paper. What really counts, however, is how it works on disc -- and work it does, with Chesney's production bringing out Nelson's natural warmth and grace. While he's written some of the most enduring tunes of the past few decades Nelson has long been considered one of the premiere song interpreters of his time, infusing a surprising array of tunes with his singular personality. This record includes a hushed, poignant version of the Kris Kristofferson-penned title track and a super-heated, album-closing version of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody." The songs that Nelson wrote for Moment of Forever take on many of the same topics addressed in that pair of tracks -- taking stock of a life well lived and considering the possibilities of what might lay down the road. On songs like the sweetly twanging "Always Now," Willie comes across like a man who's come to terms with most of those issues, coming to the conclusion that "there never was a used to be...it's always now."

ISBN 602517041806 Satchmo's contribution to modern music & pop culture is legendary. He was a great trumpeteer & influential jazz singer. He was already 63 years old when he had his first and only #1 hit "Hello Dolly". He is also believed to have started what's known as scatting. The story is during the recording of "Heebie Jeebies" (the last track in this collection) the sheet music fell to the floor so he just started vocalizing without using actual words. The set starts with his last and probably most popular hit "What A Wonderful World" which didn't become a hit until 1988, almost 17 years after his passing. The rest of the collection runs in reverse chronological order spanning four decades down to his years with the Hot Five and Hot Seven. There are also collaborations with Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Louis Jordan, and Billie Holiday. There's one track previously unreleased in the US: "St. Louis Blues".

If you're new to Satchmo, then you found a great place to start. Even if you may have other collections from him, this is still highly recommended. It's just a great listen. CD784 KENT inl KENT, Stacey 785.161 In Love Again : The Music of Richard Rodgers / Stacey Kent. - [s.l.] : Candid Records, 2003. - 1 CD : stereo ; 12 cm Compact Disc.

Recorded in conjunction with the 2002 Richard Rodgers centennial celebration, In Love Again is another winning album for Stacey Kent. The songs Rodgers wrote with Lorenz Hart always suit themselves naturally to jazz, so Kent covers nine of them here, including the great standards "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered" and "It Never Entered My Mind." There are also three of Rodgers's songs with Oscar Hammerstein II: the easy-swinging opener "Shall We Dance?," "Bali Ha'i," and "It Might as Well Be Spring," the jazziest Rodgers & Hammerstein song (no matter what John Coltrane says). Kent's crack band returns, with guitarist Colin Oxley's sensitive lines recalling Joe Pass's work with Ella Fitzgerald, and Jim Tomlinson supporting his wife on tenor sax and flute. ISBN 068944005024 For years singer-pianist Diana Krall has been bringing new lifeblood to jazz via her dual knockout talents. And while her later recordings reveal a consistently maturing artist, this 1992 debut album shows that the Nanaimo, British Columbia, native had the goods right from the get-go. In her mid-20s here, Krall sings with honesty, subtlety, and persuasion while playing the piano with head-shaking authority, both as accompanist--she offers amazing asides in between vocal phrases--and as an absolutely A-one improviser. Indeed, it is remarkable to hear her weave her gifts into a wondrous whole. Working with bass ace John Clayton and the superb drummer Jeff Hamilton, Krall presents one winner after another. "This Can't Be Love" is typical, a selection where it is all but impossible not to tap your foot. After a nicely enunciated vocal--she slides into phrases much like Sarah Vaugh--the pianist cooks in her Oscar Peterson-meets-Gene Harris style, playing hip ideas that fall easily on the ear, underwritten by her rock-solid feel for time. "As Long as I Live" is another example of Krall's ability to sing and swing a standard with a nonstop groove. "Straighten Up and Fly Right" is slower and features a deeply bluesy vocal; "I'm Just a Lucky So and So" is equally sultry. The classic ballad "Body and Soul" finds her singing with intimacy and playing with a caressing touch. A very impressive start for a very impressive artist.

ISBN 0111051162428 All for You is a tribute to the Nat "King" Cole Trio of the 1940s, when Cole performed as both a singer and a pianist. Krall, like her heroes Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, is also a singer-pianist, and she plays both roles on most of the songs here. She's able to link her singing to her piano playing in sympathetic ways and projects tremendous feeling through both. Like Cole in the '40s, Krall plays with a drummerless trio--here with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. Their sense of intimate rapport is especially valuable on ballads such as "You Call It Madness" and "I'm Thru with Love," but also allows such uptempo tunes as "Hit That Jive Jack" to swing with surprising lightness. Krall's piano-jazz cred comes through loudly and clearly on her Count Basie-styled version of the Bonnie Raitt staple "Love Me Like a Man" (written by folk-bluesman Chris Smither). But it's the collaborations with her spouse that unearth untapped emotional nuances of her velvet voice; many are reminiscent of Bill Evans's moody, impressionistic pieces. ISBN 044006510927 Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist John Pisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this program of standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here with You," Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care," and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" (a studio track from a film called The Guru), with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future. CD784 KRALL lov KRALL, Diana 785.161 Love Scenes / Diana Krall. - [s.l.] : GRP Records, 1997. - 1 CD : stereo ; 12 cm Compact disc. ISBN 011105023320 Like a mink draped over mahogany, Diana Krall's luxuriously supple alto adorns the vintage songs of romance and longing found on Love Scenes with a palpable aura of glamour and late-night cool. Her ostensibly effortless command of phrasing and intonation, whether the mood is seduction or a sweet sassiness, further fortifies the opinion that the Canadian vocalist-pianist possesses one of the great female jazz voices to surface in the late 1990s. Augmented by spare but skillful instrumentation from bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, Krall sustains a largely quiet (though hardly sleepy) ambience throughout the CD's 12 selections, from Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean (How High Is the Sky)," which she also uses as a showcase for her touch at the keyboard, to Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away from Me." Her swing is artfully subdued ("All or Nothing at All"), and her wry, expressive approach to "Peel Me a Grape" is pure charm. Yet Krall shines most luminously on languid gems such as "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You" and "Garden in the Rain." Anyone in search of an album ideal for watching city lights at 2 a.m. should keep Love Scenes in mind. CD784 KRALL onl KRALL, Diana 785.161 Only trust your Heart / Diana Krall. - [s.l.] : Verve, 1995. - 1 CD : stereo ; 12 cm Compact disc. ISBN 011105981026 Diana Krall, here with her first GRP album, expands on the delights that populated her 1992 debut, Stepping Out. Again, her talents are simply remarkable: she sings with feeling, emotion, and nuance--she invests a lyric with believability--and plays marvelous piano, no matter the tempo. The program pleases on so many levels: slip the disc into the player, hit any track at random, and you'll be moved. Take the oh-so-slow, heartfelt groover "Squeeze Me," on which her alto is both breathy and demonstrative and her accompaniments are sly, and which features a winsome solo by bass maestro Ray Brown. On another gut-wrenching crawler, "All Night Long," Krall tears you up with her emotive, intimate vocal, interspersing her singing with telling, shimmering piano notes, then delivering a solo full of wry confidences. The succulent title track is a deliciously slow bossa where Krall's vocal is partly whispered, as if sung in your ear. More upbeat is the finger-popping "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby," where the artist sings with grit and life then solos with an economical drive. Tenor saxophone giant Stanley Turrentine adds a trademark saucy improvisation. "I Love Being Here with You" is a romping shuffle where Krall's voice hits some notes on the head and stretches others like pulled taffy. "Broadway" is another vibrant outing that includes a singing, fat-noted solo from bassist Christian McBride and Lewis Nash's deft brush work. Aces all around.

CD784.72 KRALL KRALL, Diana 785.161 When i look in your eyes / Diana Krall. - [s.l.] : Verve, 1999. - 1 CD : stereo ; 12 cm Compact disc. ISBN 011105030427 Years after the '90s, the decade will be remembered for the rise of pianist-vocalist Diana Krall. Simply put, this British Columbian-born artist is one of the most engaging musicians to emerge from the heap of scat-happy singers high on pyrotechnics, but short on poetry. Stamped with the imprimatur of the Nat King Cole trio and blessed by her apprenticeship with the late West Coast piano giant Jimmy Rowles, Krall simply sings songs the way they're supposed to be sung: with devotion to the lyric and with attention to the groove. This CD finds Krall in familiar company with compatriots Russell Malone (on guitar), bassist John Clayton, drummers Lewis Nash and Jeff Hamilton, and vibraphonist (and former Bill Evans associate) Larry Bunker--all supported by Johnny Mandel's svelte string arrangements. Krall and crew take Irving Berlin's chestnut "Let's Face the Music and Dance" and the Sinatra-signatured "I've Got You Under My Skin" south to Brazil via a sexy bossa nova. Malone's lush guitar accompaniment complements Krall's heartfelt delivery on "When I Look in Your Eyes," and Michael Franks's "Popsicle Toes" dances courtesy of Hamilton's drum work. "Devil May Care," "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)," The Best Thing for You," and the stridish "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" groove with a minimum of waste, while Mandel's simpatico strings steal the show on "I'll String Along with You," "Pick Yourself Up," and "Do It Again." All of which further illuminate the cool fire from this fine gift from North of the Border. Created with XFRX, www.eqeus.com, commercial use prohibited. Performed by a Miles Davis-fronted European band for a movie by Louis Malle, this music helped define the sound of film noir. It made viewers think the genre's films had always sounded just so, with slow-walking bass beats and muted, slithering horn lines miming the characters on the screen--and underlining their emotions. The melodies here are brief fragments, sometimes rising up only to disappear and then briefly return. This is Miles playing in the moment, improvising musical impressions as he watched the screen. And what he played managed to capture the era of postwar everywhere, while it offered Davis the freedom to test his on-the-spot compositional skills within a minimalist context. How many other beboppers who worked within the shadow of Charlie Parker could have ever recorded these little gems? --John Szwed

ISBN 5099745098514 Take George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess, add Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans, and what do you get? A classic jazz album that--despite the fact that the material has been rendered almost overly familiar due to countless interpretations--still sounds remarkably fresh four decades after its initial release. Miles' soft yet piercing trumpet style is perfectly suited to Gershwin's melancholy melodies, Evans' musical direction of his 18-piece orchestra is impeccable, and their version of "Summertime" may well be the finest ever waxed. Davis and Evans teamed up for several recordings after this one (including the landmark Sketches of Spain), but Porgy & Bess still stands as one of their most successful collaborations. --Dan Epstein
