Ide Hill Gardening Society It was the evening garden Show on Wednesday 12th July in the Village Hall, with wine, food treats and of course the wonderful aroma of the flowers exhibited by the members.

We would like to welcome 3 new members to the society, who have recently moved into the village, Rebecca, Bev and Joe who did us all proud by entering their own flower exhibits.

George Fillis judged the exhibits with his normal expertise and cups, salvers and trophies were awarded to Pauline, Gloria and Malcolm with the best photographs of country scenes won by Gina.

We all had a good time and are looking forward to the visit on the 9th August from 2.30pm to Beech Grove the delightful garden of Jenny & Terry Gosling. If you are interested in joining the Gardening Society please contact Eileen Crowe at [email protected]. All are welcome, joining membership is £5. Pat Mackness

People Alwyn Cunliffe Jones You may not be aware that Alwyn is leaving the village of Ide Hill to be located near her family in Hadlow.

Alwyn has lived in the village for some 50 years and has faithfully served the village community in so many ways, as a loyal member of the WI, as one of the founder volunteers of the community shop, operating out of the container, but above all for her devotion to St Mary’s Church.

Alwyn took over from Mrs Baker the twice daily responsibility of opening and closing the church, often in dreadful weather. We are deeply grateful as will be the many casual visitors who have visited the church over the years and recorded their appreciation in the visitor’s book.

We wish Alwyn good health and happiness in her new home.

Paddy Wettern We received the sad news that Paddy late of Windmill Point, Hanging Bank had died. Paddy was a cheerful supporter of the Gardening Society a past Secretary of the Village Hall Trustees Committee, and a supporter of the community shop and St Mary’s Church. Three years ago Paddy decided to move to Salisbury to be with close friends. We express our condolences to his family and friends.

Ide Hill Country Market The Ide Hill Country Market takes place every Wednesday morning in the Ide Hill Village Hall from 9 a.m. to midday (except from mid-December to early March). Visit the market for: • Home-made cakes, pies and savouries • Home grown vegetables and fruit in season • Jams, marmalades and honey; chutney and pickles • Eggs • Pot plants, perennials, bedding plants and cut flowers • Hand made gifts, craft and cards • Refreshments

Are you taking part in Ride+Stride 2017? Across the country, preparations are beginning for Ride+Stride for Churches 2017 on 9th September. Routes are being worked out, posters are being printed, and photography competitions are being planned. Are you going to cycle, walk, jog, drive, horse-ride, or use a mobility scooter or a tractor? By taking part, you are helping to preserve Britain’s rich heritage of churches, chapels and meeting houses. Each county trust relies on your efforts and generosity to support these historic buildings. I will be happy to co-ordinate anyone who wishes to join us on the day, preferably sponsored, no matter how much or how little, for what is a fun day out visiting many local churches, and starting here at St Mary’s, Ide Hill. I will also have application forms nearer the time and forms will also be available in the Church. Funds raised are used to support the Churches in , structurally, to help preserve our heritage, so all are most welcome. Neil Arnott, Churchwarden St Mary’s Ide Hill [email protected]; 01732 750221

We know that people love to walk their dogs in the recreation ground. We also appreciate that most dog owners are responsible and clear up after their dogs BUT we regret to report there continue to be a number of occasions when children have trodden or fallen in dog excrement. Please be alert and help ensure that everyone clears up after their dogs.
