Victoria Cross is so named after Julian Royds Gribble VC whose family were prominent parishioners and landowners in and around the village of Henlow. Whilst serving as a Temporary Captain in the 10th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment, at the age of 21 he was awarded the Victoria Cross in March 1918 at Beaumetz, Hermies Ridge, France. His Citation includes; “By his splendid example of grit, Capt. Gribble was materially instrumental in preventing for some hours the enemy obtaining a complete mastery of the crest of the ridge, and by his magnificent self-sacrifice he enabled the remainder of his own brigade to be withdrawn, as well as another garrison and three batteries of land artillery”. Captain Gribble sadly died 14 days after the end of the First World War aged just 21.
