Welcome This Week Brought to you by Every week: The UK games market in less than ten minutes Issue 22: 3rd - 9th November WELCOME ...to GamesRetail.biz, your weekly look at the key analysis, news and data sources for the retail sector, brought to you by GamesIndustry.biz and Eurogamer.net THIS WEEK ... we're looking how the FIFA vs Pro Evo rivalry is shaping up so far, and looking back at who's scored the best chart performance in the past few years. Plus we've got the second part of the big interview with Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens, as well as the latest news, charts, release dates and much more! FIFA vs Pro Evo: Eurogamer Reader Interest FIFA VS PES D This week we're looking at one of the most established rivalries in the UK's videogames scene - FIFA versus Pro Evolution Soccer. This year FIFA scored two points higher than Pro Evo for the first time ever (9 versus 7) and has sold more than ever as well (partly thanks to crazy supermarket discounting) - but how have the two C E games been PR'd? A B Eurogamer Reader Interest Looking at a graph of the two games' activity on Eurogamer.net we can see that FIFA 10 (in red) succeeds in gaining more profile spikes that Pro Evo 2010 (in blue). Point A is the first hands-on of FIFA at this year's E3 and you can see that the EA title had that month virtually to itself in Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Jun '09 comparison. Points B and C are peaks for both games: The first Comparison of Cumulative UK Chart Performance is an updated hands-on with FIFA, along with some comparisons to Pro Evo - understandably popular; the second is more of the same, with later code, as well as a Pro Evo screenshot gallery. The interesting thing with both those points is that while FIFA shades the first, both titles are pretty equal in the second - but the real indication of relative popularity comes with the two reviews. Point D is FIFA's - a point at which it's the most popular game on the entire website, with a decent Cumulative UK Chart Total long tail. Point E is the Pro Evo review, which makes much less of a splash. Part of this year's battle may have been won by marketing for previous editions - the second graph shows the last couple of years of cumulative chart FIFA 08 FIFA 09 presence for both franchises, and while 2007's PES 2008 PES 2009 FIFA 2010 PES 2010 games were pretty close, last year's was much more one-sided. The GamesIndustry.biz Network now has over 9000 registered industry users! THE BIG INTERVIEW: ROD COUSENS - PART TWO The Codemasters boss talks retail relationships and proposes a radical new business model for the future of the games industry. Highlights include: - Retailers should see a higher margin on hardware to encourage greater sales priority - The margin on games is then much lower, so accepted price points should be £29.99 - Additionally retail should take a slice of DLC revenue to encourage sales there as well - Meanwhile the future of Ashes Cricket is safe, despite Transmission Games going bust MOST-ANTICIPATED GAMES MOST-READ ARTICLES 1. Gonzales THE FIRST BUT HOPEFULLY NOT THE LAST: HOW THE LAST OF US REDEFINES THE SURVIVAL HORROR VIDEO GAME GENRE by Joseph Gonzales An Independent Study Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Course Requirements for Senior Independent Study: The Department of Communication March 7, 2018 Advisor: Dr. Ahmet Atay ABSTRACT For this study, I applied generic criticism, which looks at how a text subverts and adheres to patterns and formats in its respective genre, to analyze how The Last of Us redefined the survival horror video game genre through its narrative. Although some tropes are present in the game and are necessary to stay tonally consistent to the genre, I argued that much of the focus of the game is shifted from the typical situational horror of the monsters and violence to the overall narrative, effective dialogue, strategic use of cinematic elements, and character development throughout the course of the game.

Notes 1 Introduction: Video Games and Storytelling 1. It must be noted that the term ‘Narratological’ is a rather loose application by the Ludologists and the implications of this are pointed out later in this chapter. 2. Roland Barthes states that the ‘infinity of the signifier refers not to some idea of the ineffable (the unnameable signified) but to that of a playing [ ...] theText is plural’. Source: Barthes, R., 1977. Image, Music, Text, in: Heath,S.(Tran.), Fontana Communications Series. Fontana, London. pp. 158–159. 3.In Gaming Globally: Production, Play, and Place (Huntemann and Aslinger, 2012),theeditors acknowledgethat ‘while gaming maybe global, gaming cultures and practices vary widely depending on the power and voice of var- ious stakeholders’ (p. 27). The paucity of games studies scholarship coming from some of the largest consumers of video games, such as South Korea, China and India, to name a few, is markedly noticeable. The lack of represen- tation of non-Western conceptions of play culture and storytelling traditions is similarly problematic. 4. Chapter 8 will engage with this issue in more detail. 5. ‘(W)reading’ is preferred over the more commonly used neologism ‘wread- ing’toemphasise the supplementarity of the reading and writingprocesses and also to differentiate it from earlier usage that might claim that the two processes are the same thing. 3 (W)Reading the Machinic Game-Narrative 6. For whichhe is criticisedby Hayles (see Chapter 2). 7. Landow respondstothis by rightly stating that Aarseth misreads his original comment where heclaims that ‘the reader whochooses among linksortakes advantage of Storyspace’s hypertext capabilities shares some of the power of theauthor’(Landow, p.

    4. Wargaming the Middle East: The Evolution of Simulated Battlefields from Chequerboards to Virtual Worlds and Instrumented Artificial Cities Janina Schupp Abstract Shortly after the end of a tank combat during the Gulf War, a team of US Army historians, scientists, and engineers flew to Iraq to gather detailed data of the battle. The collected information was used to create an exact virtual simulation of the combat for training. The mapping capability – offered by the resulting simulation game 73 Easting – to visualize the battlefield from any position and point in time revolutionized military exercises. With ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, these digital training cartographies are now linked to real bodies and vehicles through digital and mobile technologies during live training in artificially constructed villages. This chapter analyses this evolution and critically investigates the growing ‘gamification’ ensuing in these representations of Middle Eastern battlefields. Keywords: Wargames, Middle East, interactive battlespace, live simulations In war the experienced soldier reacts in the same way as the human eye does in the dark: the pupil expands to admit what little light there is, discerning objects by degrees, and finally seeing them indistinctly. By contrast, the novice is plunged into the deepest night. […] It is immensely important that no soldier, whatever his rank, should wait for war to expose him to those aspects of active service that amaze and confuse him when he first comes across them. (Clausewitz 1989, p. 122) Strohmaier, A. and A. Krewani (eds.), Media and Mapping Practices in the Middle East and North Africa: Producing Space. Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021 doi 10.5117/9789462989092_ch04 96 JANINA SCHUPP The act of playing at war is deeply engrained in human history and has per- sisted to the present day in both professional and hobby culture.
