strategy to offer innovative services, in 1968 Bradesco created the Bradesco Credit Card, the first in the Brazilian Bank System. The 1970s saw Brazil undergo its “economic miracle”, recording annual growth rates above 10%. Within this scenario, Bradesco performed strongly in the loan segment, mainly in vehicle financing, and extended its presence nationwide. In this decade, Bradesco merged 17 other banks and inaugurated two new units in 1978, located in Oiapoque (state of Amapá) and Chuí (state of Rio Grande do Sul), one city located in the extreme north and the other in the extreme south of Brazil, reaching its thousandth branch. In the 1980s, Bradesco created the Grupo Bradesco Seguros, operating in segments related to open private pension plans and certificated savings plans, as well as insurance. Bradesco popularized the use of magnetic strip cards among clients during these years and implanted the first ATM-equipped branches as well as Telecompras Bradesco. In 1986, the Telesaldo, now called Fone Fácil Bradesco (Easy Phone), began operations. In the early 1990s, all of Bradesco’s branches went online, and ATMs were extended to the entire country, enabling cash withdrawals, cash deposits, and check issues. The Internet Banking system, a pioneering initiative in Brazil, was also very successful and became one of the most important service channels, with millions of users annually enrolled. Now, in the first decade of the twenty-first century, Bradesco reaffirms its talent to retail. It has created the Banco Postal, in partnership with the Post Offices, aligned with its bank inclusion goals, enabling access to products and services, mainly in places devoid of bank services. It also assumes its position in the other segments in which it operates, such as Prime, Corporate, Private, and service to micro, small, and medium-sized companies. Through its long history, Bradesco never lost sight of the rightful expectations of its stockholders and investors with respect to results, nor of the awareness of its role as agent of Brazil’s economic growth, mainly in order to democratize loan service and expansion – an essential instrument to stimulating any modern economy. The strength of the Bradesco Brand will always be its largest competitive advantage.
