Auction 82 To take place on 2 September 2017

Please post bids to Peter McGowan, Nethergreen House, 9 The Green, Ruddington, Notts NG11 6DY Or email: [email protected] The deadline is Wednesday, 30 August 2017. Late bids will not be recorded. Ensure you include your current address and contact details. If you are bidding by email, please make sure you have received his confirmation of receipt. Successful bidders living outside the UK will be asked to pay for their lots before despatch. If two bids of the same amount are received for a lot, then the bid received first will take precedence, so early bidding is desirable. All lots now carry reserves, either at a default value of 75% of the estimate or at an undisclosed figure set by the seller. No bid will be accepted below the reserve. Take into account that some of our estimated prices appear rather too modest, and may be well overbid. We don’t claim that these estimates are wholly consistent, so make allowance for this. Remember that revised auction rules, issued earlier this year, now apply. NB: See the members’ page of our website for images of this material. Corrections to list in newsletter: Lots 39 and 55 have 15 (not 14) and 4 (not 3) items, and Lots 76 and 129 have 7 and 5 items respectively. The presale estimate for lot 165 is £16.

(1) 173 Rare mid-17thC anon arm of Bradshaw, with motto Pacis Justitia Basis, F3493, from the Julia Warde- 70 Aldam collection. Minor loss of ruled border at bottom left. John Bradshaw (1602-59, see Oxford DNB) judge, regicide, President of the Council of State. Bequeathed all his law books, and selected other books, to his nephew Henry Bradshaw (d.1698); the collection appears to have been dispersed in or by the early 19thC. These arms, from the same copper, appear on the title page of Payne Fisher’s verses in honour of Cromwell's victories (Irenodia gratulatoria, 1652), dedicated to John Bradshaw. We don’t know if the copper was engraved first for this book or as a bookplate. A print, doubtless derived from the title page or the printer’s waste, occurs in the Bagford Collection (British Library, Harl.5915). John Bagford (1650/51-1716), bookseller and antiquary collected ballads and a great range of ephemeral printing.
