Alpha Tau Omega‐Iota Psi New member Education Program Alpha Alpha Class‐ Started 14 new members; Initiated all 14 Mission Statement: The goal of the Iota‐Psi chapter's new membership education program is make individuals well educated, dedicated, and respectable brothers in a safe and comfortable learning environment. New Membership Educators‐Mike Gatta and Zach Mullen – Spring 2016 th Formal Chapter Meeting (Sunday Feb 8 ) Talk with new members after chapter ∙ Congratulations ∙ New member meetings are Mondays at 9pm ∙ Bring class schedules/rosters ∙ Bring notebook and writing utensil th Week 1 Meeting #1 (Monday Feb 9 ) ∙ Welcome to ATO‐Iota Psi (New members educator introductions, why we ran for this position, what to expect from the pledging process, and one thing we are excited for this semester) ∙ Hand out Introduction Forms and contracts, collect schedules/rosters ∙ Distribute The Positive Experience (Green) Books ∙ Go over rules & regulations o Attend all new member meetings, chapter meetings, and all fraternity obligations o New member meetings are Mondays at 9 p.m. o 8 week New member process learning about Alpha Tau Omega and Iota Psi Chapter o Notify new members about weekly quizzes at meetings o Study Hours – 5 hours a week, 1 hour required group session. Hours include Sunday before chapter (6:00‐7:00), Mondays before new member meeting (8:00‐9:00), and weekly before/after intramurals. o Grades are to be monitored by Academic Chair and must have professors sign weekly grade reports ∙ Announcements o Must interview ALL active brothers before initiation; Some interviews will take place after new member meetings o Explain how GreekEdu will be incorporated in the education process and explain importance of this course. Will start during week 3 meeting th o Greek 101 (February 17 . Must Attend). Temple offers a Greek 101 program where all new members of every sorority and fraternity will attend in order to explain Greek life at Temple University. Each year several active brothers participate in this program and serve as facilitators. o ELC – Bryan Murray will be coming Wednesday, February 11th – Friday, February 13th, must come introduce yourself and attend meeting with him. o Bob Baer, Head of Board of Trustees, will be at the house on Thursday, February 12th @ 6 p.m. and will provide the fraternity with dinner. This is a great opportunity to allow Bob and the new members to introduce themselves and will also serve as a brotherhood bonding opportunity. o Explain Intramurals Iota Psi is involved in upcoming in the semester. Hand out signup sheets for the sports. (Floor Hockey, Soccer, Softball, Handball, Dodgeball) rd rd o April 3 , Rear in Gear (Notify Brother Ryan McMahon) sign up by Feb 23 6am‐11am. o National New Member dues will be collected ASAP or during the next new member meeting. ∙ Welcome game / ice breakers speed chat. For this exercise, new members will be rotating and given 2 minutes to meet with each member for introductions, goals of the semester, and what made them join ATO instead of another organization. New member educators will be keeping track of the time and provide one minute warnings before switching. ∙ Lesson/Teachings o Teach the alphabet (p. 51 green book) o Executive Board Introductions (Have each position holder introduce themselves and a short description of their duties and goals for the upcoming semester. The positions present at the meeting will include: § President ‐ Samuel DeMarini § Vice President ‐ Tyler Wood § Chaplain ‐ Tim Burns § Treasurer ‐ Tyler Benton § Secretary ‐ Frank Russo § Risk Manager ‐ Marco Prado § Academic Chair ‐ Jerrin Varghese Announcements, Dismissal ∙ Vote for New Member Class President and Academic Chair at next meeting. Have each new member prepare a short speech stating their credentials and experience and why they should be elected as the president of their class. ∙ Explain the significance and importance of having a Big Brother. Selections will be made during week 3. ∙ Wrap up. Final discussions and questions, remind new members what we expect for the upcoming semester and how excited we are to complete this process together. First fraternity (Flat Hat Club Raleigh Tavern) 3. First Greek lettered fraternity (Phi Beta Kappa) 4. Explain what IFC does and why they exist ∙ Speaker: Tyler Wood, Vice President will be speaking to the new member class about his specific duties. ∙ Alumni and former Iota Psi President Anthony Bellino spoke about the importance of time management and balancing your work load while offering advice to new members. Dismissal Ø Explain to each new member that every meeting will end with a Good of the Order. § Must end with “Love and Respect” for all brothers. § The first topic of GOTO will be to discuss upcoming goals for the semester and one personal trait they can improve on to become a better person and new member brother. Ø Wrap up‐ final discussions, announcements, and questions. Hand out upcoming intramural schedule for the week and chapter activities/paperwork. rd WEEK THREE (Monday February 23 ) ∙ Hand back previous quiz and discuss any errors ∙ Quiz (questions will include material from ATO national history and Temple Greek 101 questions, and first part of the creed) write out top three big brother choices on bottom of the quiz. ∙ Remind new members about Greek EDU and due date for the first part and any other upcoming events in the fraternity. ∙ *The focus of this meeting is to emphasize the importance of risk management and how it affects the chapter. o In the previous years I believe there hasn’t been enough emphasis to the new members. ∙ Risk Management Chair Marco Prado will be speaking to new members about his duties and the importance of social media. o (Once something makes it to the internet it is permanently there forever, you are a reflection of not only Iota Psi but ATO nationally). o New member educators put together a PowerPoint presentation with several different situations people might experience. o New member educators did a good job in preparing the new members and offering several solutions to address some of these potential problems. Lessons/Teachings ∙ Clarify the risk management policy and how to go about certain scenarios. o Make sure all misunderstandings or questions are answered fully so everyone is on the same page. (Fact and Fiction questions) ∙ Go over some of the scenarios and how to avoid future problems when posting to social media o How Iota Psi was directly affected and how we learned from the experience ∙ Explain that ATO is an anti‐hazing fraternity. o Our goal is to provide the safest and most comfortable learning environment. o Hazing affects everyone for the wrong reasons and we will not tolerate it.
