IN BRIEF

In the 2016–17 season Esa-Pekka Salonen begins the second of his three seasons as the ’s Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence. During his second season as Composer-in-Residence, the will perform the New York Premieres of his and , with Yo-Yo Ma as soloist, and he will conduct a U.S. Premiere by Tansy Davies with ’s Also sprach Zarathustra, as well as the program Circle Map, presented by Park Avenue Armory.

Biography Esa-Pekka Salonen is principal conductor and artistic advisor of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor laureate of the , where he was music director from 1992 until 2009. He is artistic director and co-founder of the annual Baltic Sea Festival, which invites celebrated artists to promote unity and ecological awareness among the countries around the Baltic Sea. Mr. Salonen’s work combines intricacy and technical virtuosity with playful rhythmic and melodic innovations. His pieces for symphony orchestra include LA Variations (1996), Foreign Bodies (2001), (2002), Wing on Wing (2004), and (2011), as well as two concertos: for pianist Yefim Bronfman and for violinist Leila Josefowicz. The latter was awarded the prestigious Grawemeyer Award and was featured in a 2014 international Apple ad campaign for iPad. In 2014 Zurich’s Tonhalle Orchestra, where he was the first-ever Creative Chair, premiered , for orchestra and chorus, to great acclaim. Karawane will be performed this season by the New York Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In August 2015 Mr. Salonen led the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms. In the 2015–16 season he takes the Philharmonia Orchestra on tour to Switzerland and France and will lead the Myths and Rituals: Stravinsky’s Journeys festival, an exploration of Stravinsky’s work that continues into next season. Also this season, Mr. Salonen makes conducting appearances with the NDR, Bavarian Radio, and Chicago symphony ; New York, Vienna, and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras; Orchestre de ; and the joint forces of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, united for the first time. He will also conduct Richard Strauss’s Elektra at The Metropolitan Opera and Bartók’s Le Château de Barbe-Bleue and Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine at the Paris Opera. Throughout their relationship, Mr. Salonen and London’s Philharmonia Orchestra have curated landmark multidisciplinary projects, such as the award-winning RE-RITE and Universe of Sound installations, which allow the public to conduct, play, and step inside the orchestra with Mr. Salonen through audio and video projections of musicians in performance. He also drove the development of The Orchestra, a widely hailed iPad app that allows the user unprecedented access to eight symphonic works.

New York Philharmonic Highlights The New York Philharmonic’s relationship with Esa-Pekka Salonen began with his conducting debut in 1986, when he led the U.S. Premiere of Castiglioni’s Sinfonia con giardino in addition to works by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Nielsen. Since his 2007 appearance leading the Orchestra in the World Premiere of his own Concerto — co-commissioned by the Philharmonic and featuring Yefim Bronfman, for whom it was written — he has conducted the Orchestra in 30 performances, including the 2011 three-week Hungarian Echoes: A Philharmonic Festival and the New York Concert Premiere of his Violin Concerto (October– November 2013, with Leila Josefowicz). He hosted the November 2013 CONTACT! concert titled “An Evening with Esa-Pekka Salonen,” in which Philharmonic musicians performed several of his chamber works, and in the 2014–15 season Alan Gilbert conducted Mr. Salonen’s Nyx in New York and on the EUROPE / SPRING 2015 tour. Esa-Pekka Salonen’s tenure as Composer-in-Residence was launched in September 2015 when Alan Gilbert led his LA Variations. Mr. Salonen curated the February 1, 2016, CONTACT! concert “Salonen’s Floof and Other Delights,” featuring music written by him and composers who influenced him. In March 2016 he will conduct Messiaen’s Turangalîla-symphonie as well as host and curate “The Messiaen Connection,” a CONTACT! concert at National Sawdust, as part of the Philharmonic’s Messiaen Week. Alan Gilbert will lead the Orchestra in the New York Premiere–Philharmonic Co-Commission of Mr. Salonen’s Karawane, also in March 2016.

EUROPE / SPRING 2017 TOUR

Alan Gilbert will lead the Philharmonic on the EUROPE / SPRING 2017 tour, March 23–April 7, 2017. The tour will include performances in Luxembourg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Budapest, Vienna, London as part of the Philharmonic’s third Barbican Centre residency, Hamburg, and Copenhagen. The repertoire will reflect major highlights of the Philharmonic’s 2016–17 season, including Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Cello Concerto with Yo-Yo Ma as soloist; Mahler’s Symphony No. 4; Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion, and ; ’s Harmonielehre, Absolute Jest, and The Chairman Dances (Foxtrot for Orchestra); Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique; and Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with Frank Peter Zimmermann.
