THE SONG OF CREATION (Rig Veda X. Verse 199)

Mrinalini Sarabhai Chathunni Panicker Minaldevi, Rupande, Purnima, Bhaskar and Shashi

This piece is an experiment in form, silence and sound on listening to the chanting of the Rig Veda.

..."There was neither death nor immortality then. No signs were there of night or day. The One was breath- ing by its own power, in deep peace. Only the One was. There was nothing beyond."

"And in the One arose love, love the first seed of soul. The truth of this, the sages found in their hearts; seeking in their hearts with wisdom, the sages found that bond of union between being and not being."... q

THE FOLLOWING PIECES WILL ALTERNATE ON THE PROGRAM

SHAKUNTALA (Kathakali) (the sage) Kailash Pandya Mrinalini Sarahbai Anasuya(friend of Shakuntala) Minaldevi Priyamvada(friend of Shakuntala) Rupande (Shakuntala's foster father) Bhaskar Menon (the King) Chathunni Panicker CHOREOGRAPHY Mrinalini Sarabhai The King Dushyanta, enters the sacred precincts of the ashram to shoot deer and meets Shakuntala, the foster daughter of Ranva. They fall in love and the King gives Shakuntala his ring as a symbol of their marriage.

Shakuntala, immersed in her own thoughts, does not see the sage Durvasa when he enters. Durvasa then puts a curse on Shakuntala for ignoring him. Shakuntala loses the ring while bathing in a river and then later on is rebuked by the King as she does not have the ring. She leaves to go away alone.

MEMORY (Bharata Natyam) Mrinalini Sarabhai Minaldevi Rupandi Memory is a ragged fragment of eternity. Bharata Natyam usually utilized for Sringara, can also tell a theme that deals with conflict. Here we separate Bharata Natyam from its traditional pattern and show how powerfully it can speak to us of modern thought.

TILLANA (Bharata Natyam) Raga-Bihag; Tala-Adi Minaldevi, Rupa, Purnima The Tillana is a pure dance in which the expression of rhythm is the important feature. It is composed of intricated foot movements and sculpturesque poses.

THE ELEPHANT, THE SNAKE, AND THE LION (Kathakali) Chathunni Panicker An incident in the forest is described by the dancer who portrays each animal in turn; an elephant eating fruit from a tree is attacked by a snake. Struggling in the deadly grip, the elephant is then attacked by a lion which tears it to pieces and devours it.
