ODM ready to work for all, says Mudavadi

Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi has said ODM was committed to steering the country to economic growth.

Speaking after taking over the Local Government Ministry, Mudavadi said ODM was in Government to work and not engage in witch-hunting.

"My intention is to be fair, firm and objective. We have come to Government to work. We have not come to engage in witch-hunting. We want to steer our country to the next level," he said, on Wednesday.

He said poses a great challenge to his ministry because of its myriad problems.

"As a result of the city’s massive growth, we need to address the areas affecting our people and streamline delivery of services," he said.

He said his ministry would work closely with Mr Mutula Kilonzo, the minister for Nairobi Metropolitan.

Mudavadi took over from Mr , the other deputy PM, who is also Trade minister.

Mutula asked Nairobi residents to support his "dream" of a 24-hour city.

"I have a dream, a beautiful dream and I want to invite you to join me in dreaming to restructure Nairobi. We want to make a business stop for the world. Soon we will eliminate insecurity," he said.

He added: "We want the people of this city to live good lives and have a sense of belonging."

Elsewhere, Higher Education, Science and Technology minister, Dr wants the Biosafety Bill returned to Parliament.

Assuming her new office, Kosgei underscored the importance of the Bill that was not passed in the Ninth Parliament due to technicalities.

The Bill sought for the introduction of a policy on biotechnology to regulate the activities related to genetically modified organisms.

"I promise to return with the Bill, which flopped and I promise I will not let Kenyans down," she said.

The former Education Minister, Dr Noah Wekesa and her two Assistant ministers, Dr Kilemi Mwiria and Mr Asman Kamama, flanked Kosgei.

Kosgei said she was prepared to improve access to higher education.

Meanwhile, Kanu has thanked President Kibaki for appointing its chairman Uhuru, a deputy PM.

Party vice-chairman, Major (Rtd) Marsden Madoka, said the President had recognised Kanu for the role it played in his campaigns, last year.
