4 Introduction

Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPCU) is a state-approved higher education institution that is run by the Catholic Church and governed by the Hungarian Catholic Bishop Conference. PPCU forms a unique segment of the Hungarian higher education as a non-regional institution with national coverage and as the only single university of Hungarian Catholic higher education. The following characteristics help us to fulfi l our goals:

Orientation week At the beginning of every semester PPCU organizes a week of cultural and informative activities for our incoming students. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to meet their fellow international students, to get to know the campus and the staff members, to participate in a fun international dinner and various other activities, such as the Sport’s Day in our campus located in the forests of Piliscsaba, to enjoy traditional Hungarian folk dance or just to see the science wonders happening in our labs.

Mentor system PPCU maintains a vast and diverse mentor system, all of the international students can have a perfect buddy during their time in Hungary. We aim to pair incoming students with one of the Hungarian students studying in the same division, so they surely know their way around. Mentors can help international students in managing their daily life in the University. They also organize common visits to various cultural events, concerts or sightseeing tours all over Hungary during breaks. Sport facilities While having sport facilities in the Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law, PPCU also offers reductions to the local gyms.

Library International students can opt for a pass for the library of the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, or get a free student entrance for the second biggest library of Hungary, the Szabó Ervin Library, which is just a short walk from the university buildings at Budapest Campuses.

Housing Every international student is offered a place in one of our dormitories located in Piliscsaba or Esztergom. While Esztergom is perfect for students wishing to study Archeology, Piliscsaba is easily commutable from Budapest with train and bus. We help our international students to find affordable housing in Budapest. Hungarian language course If international students are worried about learning Hungarian, we are happy support them with free language courses. This is a great opportunity to study with their peers and get closer to the locals, and maybe read a book in Hungarian! Intercultural Evenings PPCU supports the organization of intercultural evening, where students can cook their traditional food and show videos of their country to their peers. Pázmány Card Students of PPCU are eligible for a Pázmány Card, which allows them to reductions from local shops, restaurants and services around the Campus. Own official e-mail address Students of PPCU receive their official e-mail address while they are in Hungary. Fresher Picnic Fresher Picnic is the first meeting before Fresher Camp. Fresher Camp This is a three or four day camp for first year students with civilised and creative events and some useful practical information for life at the University. Fresher Camp offers fun to the prospective first year students.

18 Department evenings and trips Most departments organise a Department Evening and Trip once a year to help students find out more about their fellow students and meet their lecturers in different situations.

Pázmány Park This event draws the largest crowd to the campus at Piliscsaba evoking the atmosphere of former May Days and Pázmány on the Move events in the Pilis. There are usually cooking and sports competitions between the different departments.

Pázmány Day Held in honour of Péter Pázmány, the founder of our University, this ceremony involves the delivery of Pázmány Awards and PhD degrees.

Opening Party This is the very first event of each academic year to help students find their way back to university life after their summer holidays. The Opening Party is usually preceded by Information Day, which provides students with key information about the University.

Cultural Talk Show The monthly Pázmány Cultural Talk Show is a series of informal chats with public figures, artists, and athletes who, due to their lives or work, may lend a fresh perspective to the students with their reflections.

Football Championship This championship is held each term to match the best teams all day long.

19 Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Humanities was opened in Budapest in 1992. It moved to its campus in Piliscsaba in 1994, and established a separate venue for certain Master’s and later Bachelor’s programs in Budapest in 2012. Due to the increasing significance, and numbers of programs in social sciences, our Faculty was renamed Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2012.

The former Vitéz János Faculty located in Esztergom was integrated into our Faculty as the Vitéz János Centre for Teacher Training in 2013. Our Faculty attaches great importance to the training of future teachers. Therefore, the faculty has campuses in three different cities: Piliscsaba, Esztergom and Budapest. This gives the advantage of diversity, which proves that Pázmány is a unique university in Hungary. It offers different environments and atmospheres for those who want to master an area in the arts and social sciences.

At the faculty there are over 40 different Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences and Economics, ranging from Hungarian and several foreign languages to history, art history, philosophy, aesthetics, psychology, sociology, international studies, political science, and Contact information international economics. 20 Campuses

Sophianum (Budapest) Sophianum, one of the main locations of Pázmány’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, is in downtown Budapest. Sophianum is home to the Institutes of Psychology, Sociology, International Studies and Political Science. Some other departments of the Faculty run some of their MA and part time BA programs in the building. The Doctoral Schools of Linguistics, Literature, History and Political Science are also hosted here.

The Piliscsaba Campus Piliscsaba lies at the foot of the Pilis Hills, surrounded by an awe-inspiring landscape which can give you pleasure at any time of the year. It is 24 km from the centre of Budapest, and it can easily be reached by both train and bus. The Piliscsaba campus is believed to be one of the most beautiful campuses in Hungary, owing to architect Imre Makovecz’s truly unique masterpieces. Students attending the Faculty of Humanities only call it “Our Hogwarts.”

The Esztergom Campus The main field of specialisation in Esztergom is teacher education. Future practitioners of two important professions, kindergarten and primary school teachers are trained there. The main building, Iohanneum, has a unique location: it is in Esztergom town centre, next to River Danube and the Cathedral. Esztergom, though a mid-sized town now, has a unique position in Hungary: it has been the seat of the Catholic Church for over a thousand years. More precisely, the Esztergom Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Church and of the cardinal-archbishop in Hungary. For a few hundred years it was also the coronation town.

21 Faculty of Theology

The Faculty of Theology is the eldest School of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University, it has been created Nagyszombat in 1635. As a Theological Institution, it dedicates its activity to the so-called ‘sacred sciences’, which mean different Fields of Theology, Christian Philosophy, Biblical Studies, Patristic Studies, Ecclesiastical History and Canon Law.

The Institute introduces students to these scientific fields and independent research practices through instructional levels which have received recognition by the Holy See and also by the Hungarian State. Therefore, our graduates can begin their ecclesiastical carrier with highly-valuated special experience within the wide activity of the Church institutional system. They will be able to enrich, with their own scientific results, the Science of Theology in Hungary and on an international level too. This is served by the undivided (5 years) Theological program and the Theological PhD instruction which is unique in Hungary.

The well-known and widely-respected teaching faculty, approved by the Holy See, is guaranteed to produce work and education of the highest quality. 22 Canon Law Institute

The Canon Law Institute “ad instar facultatis” was established in 1996. This Institute with “Faculty Rights” works on the profound scientific instruction of experts in the own internal law of the Catholic Church, which is unique within this geopolitical region. The Institute, through exceptional teaching, promotes and unifies the activity of the Ecclesiastical Tribunals on High Level not only in Hungary, but also in other neighbouring countries (i.e. Serbia, Slovakia, Romania, and Ukraine).

Our Institute has placed, from the very beginning, a significant emphasis on internationally-recognized and highly-valuated scholarly research, exemplified by the different forms of publications of new results. Globally respected and recognized members of our faculty make these activities possible. Their work is a clear testament that the Canon Law Institute “ad instar facultatis” of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University has unquestionably reached the excellent level of some of the best old and traditional Pontifical Canon Law faculties “in Urbe”. 23 Faculty of Law and Political Sciences

The Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University is an eminent law school in Hungary. It was established in 1995.

Our downtown Budapest building is a great place for our students to study and connect with fellow peers. Our faculty members seek to advance knowledge in a search for truth to explore the relationship between law and social justice.

Pázmány professors are influential legal scholars and enthusiastic classroom teachers. With diverse backgrounds as practicing attorneys, policymakers, judges and interdisciplinary experts, their wide-ranging work contributes to the community and enriches the classroom experience.

Our Deák Ferenc Institute is a market leader in offering post-graduate courses in Hungarian and in English. At the graduate level, about 50 courses are offered in English and in German to our Erasmus and Hungarian students.

24 Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics

The Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics was established in July 1998. The Faculty then became a multidisciplinary teaching and research center, as well as a Research University Faculty. The Faculty pursues multidisciplinary education and research within the field of bionics, where electronic engineering and information technology, as well as biosciences – especially neurosciences - play a vital role. Our objective is to provide multidisciplinary education in human-centered information technology, taking rapidly-changing advanced technologies into consideration.

Furthermore, we aim at turning our students into creative experts capable of handling various problems in all areas of modern life, as well as pursuing scientific research with the help of their deep and comprehensive academic knowledge.
