Land Unit Information Sheet

Land system name: Charters Towers Metamorphics Land unit: CM2

General description This land unit represents an area broadly described as undulating rises on deformed and metamorphosed sediments. It is a complex of soil-vegetation associations, in which shallow red and brown Chromosols (texture-contrast profiles) are predominant and support a mid-high woodland of Eucalyptus crebra (narrow-leaved ironbark), E. shirleyi (Shirley's silver- leaved ironbark) and E. brownii (Reid River box). However, it is not possible at the current mapping scale to delineate the many crests and ridges where the narrow-leaved and Shirley's silver-leaved ironbark become dominant on shallow Kandosols (gradational-textured profiles) and Tenosols (uniform-textured profiles with weak horizon development), or lower slopes and drainage depressions where brown Sodosols (texture-contrast profiles with sodic subsoils) and Dermosols (gradational-textured profiles with structured subsoils) support varying proportions of Reid River box, E. platyphylla (poplar gum), E. quadricostata (square-fruited ironbark) or harpophylla (brigalow). Regional ecosystem 9.11.17 is predominant, but areas of 10.5.12 are common.

Special features Implications for land use The range of soil-landscape positions provides a diverse A landscape with a range of soil-vegetation associations that range of plant species, as well as habitats for the native change from one to the other over a relatively short distance is wildlife. susceptible to 'patch-degradation'. This occurs when stock continually overgraze some areas in preference to others. A very fragile equilibrium exists between the sparse vegetative ground cover and soils that are highly susceptible to erosion. Any form of soil disturbance or reduction in ground cover can initiate a degradation process that will be difficult to reverse. Roads and tracks increase runoff, which together with excessive overland flow, can initiate erosion and cause off-site problems such as gully erosion and deposition of sediment in dams. A reduction in tree density on these slopes may add additional water, fresh or salty, to the groundwater table of adjacent land units at a lower level in the landscape. This land unit is included in Land Management Unit 1.
