HARVEST REFLECTION At harvest we thank and praise God for all his gifts of food and weather, especially his plants which mature in autumn and nourish us all year. Harvest is also an opportunity to give thanks and to praise God for all creatures which move in the waters, fly in the sky and live on the land. Harvest reminds us that all earth creatures are a community created to praise and glorify God. Nature matures in autumn even without human help. Wild creatures enjoy the fruits of the season. With human co-operation, however, nature glorifies God through cultivated fields, including grain and grapes which make bread and wine. Human hands and voices represent the whole earth community, in Christ, to God. The transformation of the earth at harvest is a sign, the beginning, of the final transformation of all material creation in the resurrection when God does not make a new thing, but makes ‘all things new’. Edward P. Echlin, author of Earth Spirituality, Jesus at the Centre, Arthur James, 1999

ON A LIGHTER NOTE… As it’s harvest, we can expect the jokes to be corny!

Did you hear about the magic tractor? It went up the road and turned into a field!

Buttercup and Daisy were chatting as they chewed the cud. “’Ere, have you heard about this mad-cow disease?” “Yes, sounds nasty.” “I’m glad I’m a chicken.”

What do you call someone who used to be really keen on farmyard vehicles? An ex-tractor fan!

With every best wish,

By the time we were leaving the sun was shining (much to the relief of the committee) and we moved on to our afternoon in Altamont.

We couldn’t have gone to the gardens at a better time of year. All the rhododendrons and azaleas were in full bloom and the colours were spectacular. What a lovely amble we had around the lake, with views to please everyone – not just the gardeners!

Guiding Ireland On Sunday 23rd May (Pentecost) we welcomed members of Taney Guides, Brownies and Ladybirds to our Family Service. The Service was a celebration of a centenary of Guiding in Ireland and to mark this an Irish beech tree was planted in the Church grounds afterwards. This was overseen by Dilys Lindsay, herself a former Guide Leader and now President of Guiding Ireland. We hope that the tree will be a visual reminder of the life and witness of the Guiding Association in our Parish.

Taney Visit to Mission Partners in Gaza – Bishops Appeal €20,000 Grant

For a number of years we have supported the work and ministry of Near East Council of Churches Committee for Refugee work in the crowded inhospitable camps of the Gaza Strip. Last year 2009, Taney gave €2,000 to NECCCRW and its Director Constantine Dabbagh to assist their vital work amongst one million refugees in one of the most over crowded places on earth. On behalf of our Parish, we applied to Bishops Appeal for a grant for NECCCRW and in July 2010, Bishops Appeal gave €20,000 towards their work and witness. In Gaza, the small Christian Community of some 2,500 people, make a significant contribution to bring much needed assistance amongst one and a half million people, mostly Muslims, who are prisoners behind high security boundaries. Last year when Jennifer and I visited Gaza following the war, we saw the vital help given by NECCCRW in their Mother and Child Health Care Centres, in their Medical and Pharmacy Clinics and mobile Dental Units. In their Centre in Gaza city courses are organised in Secretarial and Language Studies, Dress-making and Computing. In other Centres along the Gaza Strip job training, trades, motor and engineering are combined with the teaching of technical subjects, English language, physics and maths. All of these courses are open to men and women from the Refugee Camps and are provided by NECCCRW completely free of charge. Thank you to Bishops’ Appeal for this much needed grant towards Taney’s Gaza partners-in-mission.

Refugee Families of Bethlehem Appeal Taney continues, as a parish, to provide help in various ways to the refugee families of Bethlehem. As a result of our fund-raising through our Appeal Evening after ‘Candlelight Carols’ in December, our help has focussed on educational, medical and financial needs of ordinary families:

• School bags, books, paper, writing materials to some fifty children • Physiotherapy for a severely disabled mother, Sa’ada • Diabetic monitors – to help meet the high incidence of diabetes in the Camps. For one child, we provided an ‘Insulin pen’ so that she could administer her own medication • For two children in one family, a girl (7yrs) and a boy (5yrs) who are blind, we have supplied a Perkins Braille printer, not otherwise available. This will enable them to go to the local school for the first time with other children. Their parents, like many others have no work and no source of income • Dental Care for several children and emergency financial help for diagnosis and medication is ongoing.

With your help, lives have been enhanced.

“Water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink”… Coleridge The population of the Dublin region is growing. Current supply/demand balance (2010) is on a knife edge with little or no spare capacity. Planned expansion of existing water treatment plants (Ballymore Eustace & Leixlip) will enable demand growth to be met in the short term (for a limited period) but the expanded water treatment facilities will not provide sufficient headroom to ensure satisfactory ‘security of supply’ to cope with potential plant outages, infrastructure failure, new ‘wet’ Intel-type industries, the effects of extended dry periods or icy conditions (as witnessed in January 2010 when severe water shortages occurred for prolonged periods). www.watersupplyproject-dublinregion.ie

• On our planet, 97.5% of the water is saltwater, unfit for human use. • Less that 1% of freshwater is usable, amounting to only 0.01% of the Earth’s total water. Even this would be enough to support the world’s population three times over if used with care. • The recommended basic water requirement per person per day is 50 litres, but people can get by with 30 litres. • 5 litres is recommended for drinking and cooking, with another 25 for hygiene. • The average US citizen uses 500 litres per day , the average Irish citizen 200 litres • The average for Tanzania is 10 litres per day, while the average Gambian citizen has only 4 ½ litres. • The rural poor in less economically developed countries are more likely than those in cities to have no safe water supply. Women typically walk for 4 hours each day to fetch water. A can holding 18 litres of water weighs 20 kilos. (Compare: the limit for our suitcases on airlines; a toilet flush uses on average 7 litres of water if it is a water-saving cistern.) • As much as 80% of all health problems in the developing countries can be attributed to lack of clean water; • 1 billion people are without clean drinking water, and 1.7 billion have inadequate sanitation facilities; • The World Bank has estimated that access to safe water and sanitation could result in 2 million fewer deaths from diarrhoea among young children. • Ten times the number killed in wars worldwide are killed by water-borne diseases each year. • A meat diet uses 4 times as much grain as a vegetable-based one – and that grain needs water: 2000 litres per kilo rice, 1,000 for 1kg wheat, 500 for 1 kg potatoes, 24,000 for feed for cow to produce 1 litre milk, the 25 grams of cotton needed to make a T-shirt takes 25 baths of water.) • Hippo bags in cisterns displace 3 litres of water. Some county councils give hippo bags. • Water from dripping taps in one school was wasting 110 litres a day! page 16 Taney News Autumn 2010 From the Registers
