10 U9 Green Round 10 Match Report

U9 Green Round 10 Match Report

Just how good has this football season been so far? Perfect weather, fantastic grounds, amazing family support and a team that just gets better and better each week. Round 10 was no exception, with the Green team coming off of a stonking victory over Ramsgate last week, matching up against the highly fancied and physical Miranda Reds. Olds 1 was at it picture perfect best, basking in the winter son and the scene was set for a thrilling game of football.

If we counted only 3 quarters of the game, the mighty Panthers would have won by 1 point this week – 3.3.21 to 3.2.20. Sadly we leaked 3 goals in the first quarter, being let down by some light tackling. For a team that has been so good this year at pinning players, we struggled to get a hold of the slick Reds early on and they made us pay.

That only lasted a quarter however and then the Panthers were back to their best.

Special mention this week has to go to the two boys who stepped up from U8s to help us out. Brynn has become a regular in the side over the last few weeks now and it is hard to imagine the group without him at present. His game continues to improve and he responded well to the increased physicality of the game this week. Brynn kicked his first goal for the 9s this week, from a beautiful passage of play (hat tip Ari). A centre clearance from Alex Tsigris, handballing it to Thomas Blackman, who in turn handballed to Thomas Menner, who chipped a great kick to Brynn, who went on to kick truly – well done Brynn!

Jett played his first game of U9 footy this week and his contribution was immediately felt up and down the ground. It was like he been a member of the playing group since the start of the season. He notched up 8 disposals and held 3 amazing marks, all which changed the flow of play. His run out wide from the centre half forward was a highlight for me, perfectly weighting a kick into the sticky hands of Thomas Menner, who went on to kick our opening goal. You can come and play with us anytime Jett.

11 U9 Green Round 10 Match Report continued...

Another shout out need to go to Thomas Blackman, who had a wonderful game with an equal high 23 disposals for the season and 10 clearances to boot. Just outstanding.

Hugh Robertson and Owen McNamara are also due a mention for improved performance this week. Both had a strong number of disposals and didn’t stop giving throughout the game. Hugh, your last quarter was brilliant and we look forward to more of it over the next few games.

Great game boys! You have all come a long way this year and there have been improvements from everyone out there. Ten games down and five more games to go this year, so lets finish strongly.

Proud of you and the effort you put in.

Go Panthers

12 U9 Green Round 11 Match Report

Another stunning game for footy on Sunday, and Barden Ridge Oval was again in impeccable condition, a credit to the Bangor Tigers outfit.

The Panthers put together a consistent performance across the team with a number of outstanding individual performances that resulted in a 36 (5 Goals 7 Behinds) to 6 (1Goals) victory, which puts us at 4 Wins and 7 Losses (with a number of very close losses).

Young Blackman amassed a total of 24 disposals predominately from the first 2 quarters that broke his disposal record, matched with 11 Clearances and 1 Behind.

And what a game for Owen McNamara, he was on fire kicking 3 very nice goals, 1 behind and taking 3 strong marks.

Menner was tough in the forward line and in defence, setting up 2 goals with great contested handballs and taking the mark of the day.

Two memorable team goals – Tsigris clearance from the wing where he kicked to front of goals, where Menner contested the ball hard and was able to handball to McNamara who kicked truly.

Then, Tsigris coming out of defensive, winning the clearance on the right wing and kicking long to Tonkes, who scored a goal on the run from 25 meters out.

Tsigris had a strong performance across the ground using his running to amass 14 disposals, a game high 14 clearances and game high 7 tackles.

13 U9 Green Round 11 Match Report continued...

Brynn and Jett have shown tremendous development again and had very consistent performances.

Hanlen’s first game back was excellent getting into the thick of things with 6 disposals and his now trademark floss dance after a very tidy goal.

Ben Clayton did not give up all day and put together 11 disposals and a couple of very helpful clearances and Henry Tonkes who’s all round game continues to improve with 13 disposals, 3 tackles and 4 clearances along with his 1 Goal and 4 Behinds.

Most pleasing for the coaches was the overall team effort, every single boy put their heart and sole into this contest and we were able to dominate Bangor (who have some very skilled players) because we played as a team, we looked for each other, we cleared from defence using the flanks and kicked to our own players advantage.

This is our key to taking on the tougher teams and winning, we will continue to focus on these elements at training, what a team, go Panthers.

Thanks again to Ari for the stats (and for the much plagiarised report this week!)

Enjoy and until next time.

14 U9 Green Round 12

U9 Green Round 13 Match Report

U9 Green vs Bangor.

It was a very tight game and Bangor gave us a real contest today.

5 point final victory which makes it 3 wins in a row and 6 Wins and 7 Losses for the season.

Outstanding games from both Thomas Blackman (23 Disposals, 8 Clearances/Contested Possessions and 1 Goal) and Alexander Tsigris (15 Disposals, 6 Clearances, 8 Tackles and 2 Great Goals.

Special mentions to Hugh and Josh for great work in the 3rd and final quarter, excellent handballs to team mates and tackling.

We also welcomed Cooper to Penshurst today who played his first game of AFL and did a great job on debut.

After a quiet first half Henry saved us a few times with some wonderful chase down tackles and clearance work from the back.

For me the highlight of the match had to be with seconds left, Penshurst hanging onto a 5 point lead, the ball in dispute with a high kick to a pack of players. If Bangor take possession they had a strong chance of scoring and stealing the game, Jay Putra, in the middle of the pack took a wonderful overhead mark! He went back, took his time to take his kick and the siren went giving Penshurst the win.

Well done boys, let’s push on with this winning form and see if we can make it 4 from 4 next week.

U9 Green Round 15

U9 White Round 10

16 U9 White Round 11 Match Report

Sunday’s game at Waratah Oval was an example of how the U9s White boys keep raising the bar.

First time we played Miranda Bombers Red they crushed us, next time we just beat them with a little help from one of their ‘Jets’ - this time we were the better side with no excuses from the hosts.

Our first quarter was quite brilliant, with James winning multiple centre clearances and Frankie and Will M running amok up front. Before anybody knew it, the Panthers were three goals to the good.

The match tightened up after quarter time and turned into a real arm wrestle.

We were forced to defend well at times and we did just that: Alex again led the way with his outstanding tackling, Will T used his pace to turn defence into attack and Lachie put his body on the line to win some important balls.

James’ crumb-and-conversion added to our tally in the second quarter, but the highlight was Luke’s nomination for Mark of the Year - rising above the pack to take a screaming overhead mark near goal. Poor Luke must’ve been suffering from vertigo on the way down from taking his speccie as he missed his on the half-time siren.

17 U9 White Round 11 Match Report continued...

The tone of the game continued in the third term, with the Bombers coming hard and our boys matching them: Luke and Frankie were finding space out wide, Billy and Oscar were making their direct opponents work for every touch and Fionn enjoyed his best moment of the season, using speed from a clean pick- up before splitting the big sticks. Again the Bombers threatened in the last quarter, but again we responded. Lincoln really made his presence felt, combining with his teammates to make it hard for the opposition to work the ball forward, and when they did we had the answers - in the final seconds Fionn put his body on the line to repel one last Miranda thrust and cap a sensational Panthers victory. Well done, boys. As I keep saying, you are now playing as a team and this win was a team effort; each and every one of you played a part. The great thing is, once our defensive structures get tighter, I believe we can get even better. And that is a scary thought! Yours in Australian Football, Coach Scott

U9 White Round 12

18 U9 White Round 13 Match Report

U9 White vs Heathcote.

Heathcote brought their A game to Olds Park and without coach Scott, and the Heinrich boys it looked like it would be a big challenge for the Whites today.

But answer the challenge the boys did!

In fact as soon as the siren went, and while fill in coach’s Andrew & Craig were getting organised on the sidelines the boys pumped through their first major, straight out of the first centre bounce!

Luke Robinson was on fire early in the game, his run and carry around the packs was a standout and he forced many clearances and bounced his way down the wing on more than one occasion throughout the game.

Frankie was absolutely brilliant with some incredible runs, fending off and bouncing at full speed and using his skills to hit targets beautifully. Will McMahon made his presence felt and his footy smarts found him in the right space a lot to not only stop Heathcote’s advances but counter attack strongly as well.

Will Townsend was very dangerous in front of goal and capitalised when the wind was going our way which was vitally important as the wind today was a huge factor. Henry Tonkes filled in and was a pretty handy addition kicking 2 majors.

The last quarter was where the game was won, with just a one goal lead going into the final term and the wind going Heathcotes way the odds were stacked against us. Our backline of Will M, Will T, Lincoln and Green fill in Scott Blackman had a huge job to do to withstand the pressure and all 4 boys stood up when it counted and worked together as a very strong unit. They had strong support from our centres Luke, Frankie, Lachlan and fill in Thomas M who we asked a lot of as we needed them to run deep into defence to shore up the backline and sprint out again on attack. All this lead to us holding Heathcote to only 2 points in the term and with Oscar just missing a well earned shot on goal at the other end we were home with a 5 point win.

Well done Whites, thanks for a great 4 quarter effort. Keep us the good work next week when Scott and the boys are back in town.

U9 White Gala Day Report

Well boys, where do I begin? You’ll do well to be involved in a more dramatic day of sport and we’re only in Under-9s! First of all, what an incredible day for the Penshurst Panthers. To have both of our teams in the Grand Final is an incredible effort. To draw that Grand Final is something else. You couldn’t have scripted it. You should be proud of what you achieved. Our first two games were the best we’ve played this year - can you believe we kept Miranda Red scoreless after the way we started the season against them?! When we play with desire and as a team, we are hard to stop. There were so many good passages of play and our structure was excellent, proof that what we have been practising is making you boys into better and smarter footballers. Match summaries and some individual comments below but let me just say how great it’s been coaching you boys this season. You’re a fantastic bunch, a real credit to your parents, and watching your development through the course of the season has been a real privilege. I really hope each of you return for U10s in 2019. See you all at presentation day on October 20.

20 U9 White Gala Day Report continued...

Game 1 PP White 3.2 (20) v Miranda Red 0.0 (0) We played this team in the opening round of the season and got soundly beaten. Our progress this year can be summed up by this game. Miranda were quite simply never allowed to get in the game.

Game 2 PP White 5.3 (33) v Ramsgate Rams 0.2 (2) Fourteen minutes of one-sided footy. We actually trailed this team at 3QT a fortnight ago but not today. The boys were irrepressible, dominating with the breeze and setting up well against it.

Game 3 PP White 1.1 (7) v Cronulla Blue 0.2 (2) The style and flow of our opening two wins gave way to a real grind against a team that just wouldn’t go away. A few of the boys seemed a yard off the pace but we were still good enough to get the win - and establish a percentage of 1500!

Game 4 PP White 1.1 (7) v Cronulla Titans 4.4 (28) The Titans, our nemesis. We led them by a goal for most of the first half but a Cronulla major just before the siren - the first we’d conceded all day! - gave them some momentum. And they rode that momentum into the second half, piling on three more goals that would prove very costly to us later in the day.

Grand Final PP White 2.1 (13) v PP Green 2.1 (13) An all-Penshurst decider - what an achievement. We started with the breeze - after turning our guernseys inside out, of course - and took a one-goal lead into half-time. Things looked good when we opened the scoring into the wind after the break, but the Greens found another gear and fought back to force a draw. With superior percentage from the round-robin games, the Greens were crowned Premiers. Congratulations Greens! I’m so proud of all our boys - White and Green.

21 U9 White Gala Day Report continued...

Now, to my Whites players...

Will T You were sensational, Will. A major player in our attacking moves and a potent scoring threat. You look a natural forward with your pace, agility and goal sense. Lincoln LJ, your late-season improvement has been a joy to behold. Your forward play and attack on the ball was great. Keep up the good work. But that falcon in the GF - I hope your face isn’t too sore! James Your clean hands and ball use was always going to be important on a windy day like today and you didn’t disappoint. It can be rough playing with the big boys but you never shirked the task. Alex You’re a barometer for the team, Alex. When you play well, we play well. You were quite outstanding in the first two games. Learn from the Grand Final. Always put your team first. Will M What can I say, Will? Today is proof that not only can you play the game, but now you understand the game. Your positional sense and skill repelled so many opposition attacking moves and you were brilliant in setting up our forwards. Frankie You make me smile, Frankie. Loved your attack on the ball and the run you provided. Major ball winner, hard at it and you showed today what a natural midfielder you are. Luke You were like a terrier today, Luke, always sniffing around the packs and winning clearance after clearance. We saw today what we have seen all season - effort and aptitude rolled into one. You are a pure footballer. Billy Billy, you epitomised our team-first ethos today. You were our full-back, our goalkeeper all day and you defended like a lion. We conceded a total of four points in our first three games. Enough said. Fionn Your energy was off the charts today, Fionn. Loved how you marked your opponent and helped out teammates when they needed it. Well done. Lachlan You are always up for the challenge, Lachie, and that’s what I like about you. It was great to see you win that ball on the outer wing and set up a forward thrust. Cooper Welcome to the team, Cooper. Today was a learning experience for you and I can’t wait to see what you are capable of next season. Oscar We missed you, Oscar. And boy, did you miss an eventful day. Looking forward to having you back in the team in 2019.

22 U10s Round 10 Match Report

Well we had a very good day for footy and against a tough opposition with a few players down we took to the field looking to get back on track. The first quarter was a very tight with Miranda getting away to a 1 goal lead. In the second we turned on the effort with Henry providing a great target up front looking for the ball at every opportunity and got a goal to get us back with Bombers. Unfortunately, the great efforts of the boys went missing a bit and we forgot some basics but they committed hard to trying to get their hand on the ball with several close opportunities just not getting through the big stick and the Bombers taking most of theirs we slipped away. The boys tried very hard in the 4th but we can safely say we didn’t have the best day but there is always next week to get our game back.

U10s Round 11 Match Report

Another cracking day for footy and the Boys came to play a very positive warm up indicated that all players wanted to have a good day. The 1st quarter was very pleasing to watch with the boys holding position and making themselves very accountable which created some great teamwork and Anton opened up the account giving us the lead and with the midfield pushing hard we managed to keep the Tigers goalless. The second quarter was once again won out of the middle with Henry, Jack, Arda and James giving the forwards plenty of ball with Harry and Seb posting goals and also James going so close to scoring we kept up the good work. Defensive Pressure was also impressive with Sam, Ben and Harley not letting anything get close to the goals. In the 3rd with Henry in his favourite position up front he was everywhere along with great support from Ewan, Arda and James we pushed our lead out by another goal to Henry. Once again the backs, Harry, Danny, Kendall and Zepher ensured nothing was getting through. The fourth was another great display of teamwork with the backs not seeing much of the ball we poured on the pressure with Seb getting another goal and Sam being so close with 2 shots and Jack providing plenty of ball to the forwards we came away with another chance to sing the Club song once again. Best on ground was James with great attack on the footy and once again showing great improvement keep up the good work.

23 U10s Round 12 Match Report

2018-07-22 U10 v Cronulla Another great day for footy and also Grandparents day we stated the game against probably the strongest team with both side a few players down but that didn’t stop Henry 3 and Kendall 1 getting us away to 4 goal 1st quarter on the back of some excellent centre clearances. The 2nd quarter was again another good one for us with the back stopping several good Cronulla attacks and working well with the midfield gave the chance for LG 2 and Sam 1 a 3 goal extension. In the 3rd quarter Cronulla came at us with some very determined attack which required some of our best defence of the season keeping the opposition to 1 goal. With the boys digging deep the 4th was a good continuation of the boys improving their footy with another goal to Danny which gave us a the much deserved draw. I was very impressed with all our players but I really enjoy it when I see players improving each week and Zepher did that with getting himself involved and doing a lot of the 1%ers whenever he could and he was our best on ground for this week.

U10s Round 13 Match Report

29/7/2018 U10 B v Heathcote Hawkes

With a windy day we took on the Hawkes the boys took on a very determined Hawkes outfit. With the boys trying hard each quarter to peg bag the lead that they got away to in the first half. With some close calls and a bit of unfortunate luck we could not run them down in the last quarter. The boys showed some great attack on the ball but sometimes it just doesn’t work out and you have to move onto the next game and try again. Well done to Ewan and Kendall for turning in solid games and getting the awards for the game.

24 U10s Round 14 Match Report

5/8/2018 U10B v Bangor

We turned up to play against another competitive opponent that we had a good game against earlier in the season the boys once again found ourselves on the wrong end of the score at half time. With a determined effort in the 3rd quarter we closed the gap and set up the 4th quarter for a close finish. With both teams trading goals the Tigers maintained the lead and ran out winners. Sebastian and Jack both turned in a great game and took away the awards for the day.

U10s Gala Day Report

Gala Day

After the trivia night and with an early start on a chilly day at Barden Ridge or as the boys call it “Barden” Fridge the boys poured themselves into 6 games of footy with very quick turn arounds we came away with 3 wins and 3 losses. With 2 losses being very close we had a good day that hopefully will lead into a good season next year with the first full season of competitive footy. Thanks for a great year boys and thanks to all the parents that helped out both Daneen in our first years of Managing and Coaching.

U10 YGs Round 13 Match Report

What a great game last week, even dare I say balmy weather at Heathcote! All the girls really lifted their game this week, putting in to practice their tackling skills they have been trying out at training. Despite being down several players, and a slow start the girls were relentless for the last three quarters. A standout game by Clare with her tackling, kicking AND marking all on show kicking two goals. Sienna who played great as usual kicking a goal and making it difficult for Miranda to score and run away with the ball and after hurting her hip came back on injured to play out the game in the last quarter. Congratulations and welcome to Emily our newest and youngest recruit who got right in there despite never playing before! Amelia was in the game all over the ground almost taking a great mark, and along with Raeden and Lucinda showing eager tackling and close disposals in the close play. Evelyn as always never gives up the ball and wins plenty of free kicks! Great work girls.

26 U10 YGs Round 14 Match Report

Another great game on Sunday with both our coaches back showing serious team work themselves. The girls came out of the blocks firing tackling in packs and running the ball down the field. Milla – a welcome addition from the U12YG – joining us for the first time and skilfully kicked our first goal. This was quickly followed by one from Ella. Both girls scoring multiple goals for the game – and that is a fantastic thing to type “multiple goals”!! Really shows how the team has progressed. Sienna displayed her speed all over the field getting the ball out of packs and headed towards goal. Darcey had no cobwebs from her break and was in the action for the whole game. Darcey, Matilda and Raeden showed great sportsmanship playing a quarter each with the opposition. Emily showed her match toughness getting some accidental contact and bouncing right back and keeping her eye on the ball – fantastic for a second game. Lucinda was her usual tackling dervish, Evelyn tied up the ball making the opposition work hard for all their possessions. Matilda was a red streak with some great kicking. Clare followed up her star game last week with more tackling and great kicks. It was awesome to see so many girls on the field and playing some great footy.

U11 White Round 11 Match Report

Penshurst White Vs Ramsgate Rams U/11’s Today’s match was a battle between 3 vs 4 and we were greeted with a chilly 6 degrees for 8.30am start. Trying to get the boys warmed up as well as being awake was a challenge. Our team started a little slowly despite Harvey Harrison winning the ruck contest easily. Mathew Fitzgerald was marking everything that came his way and peppered the goals but just couldn’t get them through. Ramsgate fired up and started using the large spaces on the ground finding their players easily as our boys were not contesting enough. Ramsgate got the first goal of the game and were starting to look like the better team. Lachy Landy’s dash off the half back was keeping us in the game as he continually broke through the lines and managed to sneak forward and score our first goal. Ramsgate then hit back immediately with another goal to take the lead into quarter time. The second quarter was a tough affair but we weren’t helping our situation as we were kicking poorly and straight to the opposition. The turnovers were killing us as Ramsgate would make us pay as they moved the ball with ease into their forward line. Our backs were working overtime with Benji Lewis and Max Mason playing well to help minimise the opposition scoring. Lucas Donnelly playing across half forward was showing his speed to help keep the ball in the forward line and finished off the quarter with a nice goal. At half time we had to make some changes so we put Max Haigh and Max Plummer into the middle and it worked a treat. Their bigger bodies out bustled Ramsgate with Max Haigh playing one of his best quarters of football ever. His second and third efforts a real standout as he hunted the ball and the player. We really turned the game around this quarter and our forwards lead by Aussie Snell (kicking 2 goals for the quarter) really capitalised on the ball coming into the forward half. Lachy Landy continued his great game and scored his second for the match. The backline held strong this quarter as we tightened up our defence with Lachy Ellis very lively and Ethan Allardice all playing their roles to keep Ramsgate scoreless. The last quarter was more of an even battle with Ramsgate desperate to hit back and they did so with their third goal for the game, but we again lifted another notch and with Aussie landing his third goal the victory was ours. Score 44 - 24 Goals Austin Snell 3, Lachy Landy 2, Lucas Donnelly 1

Panthers White vs Panthers Green

After two weeks off, it wasn’t hard to get the boys excited about getting back on the field playing a game of footy. We were again playing our brothers the Penshurst “Greens” which we had a tough contest with only a few weeks ago. We were short a couple of players (holidays & illness) but welcomed first gamer to our team Kai Allie and Harri Plummer who backed up from the under 10’s.

The game started a little slowly as the team blew off the holiday cobwebs. Good ruck work from Harvey made sure our boys got first use of the ball. Samuel, Isaac and Ethan (playing his best game of the year) were very busy in the midfield and were kicking it to our marking options in the forward line in Matthew and Aussie (who kicked 3 goals for the game).

Our backline worked overtime as the “Greens” attacked, some good defensive work from Kai Allie kept repelling their attacks. Lachy Landy continued his good form with his dash from the half back line all the way into the forwards and being rewarded with 2 goals for his effort. Under 10’s back up player Harri Plummer turned it on with 2 goals of his own, one being a long-range bomb which delighted the crowd. All the boys really lifted, Lucas showed his speed and cunning around the goals and finished with a couple of gems. Max Plummer, Myles and Max Haigh all had stints in the ruck and played well as we strive to train our boys to become versatile in numerous positions. Jai and Benji both got better and better as the game wore on and finished with a well-deserved goal each.

We showed some good team work in a tough contest with the “Greens” to help kick start the final quarter of the season.

Coach David

Goal Scorers – Austin Snell 3, Lachy Landy 2, Lucas Donnelly 2, Harri Plummer 2, Jai Van Den Borne and Benji Lewis 1 each.

U15YG Penshurst Panthers versus Glebe Greyhounds

The Panthers (which included three girls from our u12 YG team) started the match against the current leader of the division, the Greyhounds strongly and kept the momentum going. Throughout the tight match both teams defended well with the Panthers defending particularly well, keeping the Greyhounds goal-less.

The Panthers displayed fantastic team work and brilliant attack scoring three goals. Despite the tough tussle the Panthers led throughout the whole match winning 3.2-20 to the Greyhounds 0.5-5.

A huge thanks to the u12YG who played with our team during the season – Bianca, Zoe, Eadie and Emily. We are very grateful for your willingness to play with us and are so impressed with your efforts and skills, well done!

Panthers V Forest Lions The 17s took on Forest Lions for the first time this year. With Jordan and Mat playing up from the 15s we had a full bench which was a luxury rarely available. The Lions came out strong and despite a lot of inside 50s the Panthers were only up 1 goal at 1/4 time. In the 2nd and 3rd the boys fired up and by the third quarter had 15 point led following a couple of late goals from the Lions. In the last quarter the boys pulled away to end up with a 6 goal win, a nice win for Samuel H to finish his 150th game! Panthers 8-10-58 def Lions 4-5-29. Next week we fuel up to get up to the Lions home ground at Frenchs Forest for a return match.
