We had hoped that by now, we would be back to “normal.” Well, it doesn’t appear this winter sports season will be the type of “normal” that we were expecting. The “normal” that we hope to find at this point is our area students back in the classroom, and on the court or in the gym or on the ice. We hope we’ll all be able to get back into our normal routines again, and we know some of the habits we’ve been needing to create will stick, and others will not. We hope we can be huddled around the radio, the live stream, or whatever device you’re able to consume local high school sports this winter. We hope we can be back cheering in person too. What we do know, is that when the year 2020 turns to 2021, we will still be working to just make something happen for the kids. We want the kids to be healthy, and to be able to put in hard work to compete as an individual, as a team, and as a community. We want what’s best for everyone, and we’ve learned that what we want, isn’t always what we can get. At least, immediately.
As the Fall seasons finished in North Dakota, and were cut short in Minnesota, we were reminded by a few of the fall coaches that the lessons learned this year by student athletes were some of the best life lessons that could ever be taught. Do yourself a favor and listen to the “Coaches Corner” interviews completed on November 21st of 2020 on the website rjbroadcasting.com, the click sports and then click “coaches corner” for KRJB & KRJM Radio. The interviews will tell you everything you’ll need to know.
Thank you very much for grabbing a copy of this sports guide. The guide will likely not be 100% accurate with the schedules and broadcast plans, but what is true is that we will provide the best coverage possible on KRJB, KRJM, KKCQ Radio and also on yourliveevent. com this winter and beyond. Stay tuned, and check the rjbroadcasting.com website often for updates and changes!

ANNOUNCER PROFILE: JIM “ BIRK” BIRKEMEYER This will be my 39th winter season My thoughts: Life has always been a game and is the biggest game we ever will be able to play. For myself, since March everything has been CONSISTENTLY inconsistent. With everything going on--- every portion of every day includes unknowns, uncertainty and more underlying stress than any of us realize. I’m not alone, I believe I’m accurate when I say: we all have many thoughts and other people around us who we’ve had conversations about the entire situation. All of us by now have experienced positive covid tests, have been exposed, have been in quarantine or have family members who have. Has it affected everyone, absolutely . In reality, deeper than we know or more than only the virus. Just my nonscientific comment. Without going to deep, does anyone agree with me that this just really *****! Does anyone agree, we need the Coronavirus to end soon! For myself at the Radio Station, it’s just been a roller coaster ride. Some days it jerks, tugs, pulls and makes you not want to get back onto that ride. And then, we know there’s a better ride coming so we go back for more. KEEP MOVING FORWARD. KEEP GROWING. #RJBOUT I think somedays about all the extra work created and then I receive a positive email from an Activities Director or Coach who has to make another change after a previous change in scheduling. Thanks for your communications and those “comments” or “remarks” that make me smile or a good belly laugh. I can’t wait for the day/week/ month we are all together enjoying the fulfilment of our promises and debts owed to each other. It’s going to be one GREAT event! I think of school teachers, support staff and students of all ages. Wow! I know what I go through to keep moving forward with business, scheduling and planning. I want to say THANK YOU. As School Administration, Teachers, Educators, Custodians, Bus Drivers, and any others involved in the school, THANK YOU! WOW! You are teaching our young people while still needing to take care of yourselves and your families and join the rest of us serving the communities we live and work. Coaches and athletes: Continue working, coaching, practicing, getting better. Be thankful for every day of practice and every game you get to play or coach. I’ve been around a long time. Throughout my career I’ve talked about “you never know when you will play your last game”. That seemed so harsh at times when it referenced the end of a season coming or end of ahigh school career coming. Now, I guess it has a different feel when I say it. It’s like life as we don’t know how long we get to do something we love doing and being with friends and family. LIVE LIFE. RESPECT. APPRECIATE. GIVE THANKS. BE THE BEST AND DO THE BEST THAT WE CAN DO EVERYDAY NO MATTER WHAT THE SITUATION IS. All the best to everyone!

With all that is going on and with all of the uncertainty surrounding the status of the Basketball and Wrestling and Hockey seasons, what are your thoughts on the Winter Sports seasons for this year?-
I agree that safety is the first priority when it comes to the pandemic but I think it’s important that our student athletes have a chance to play, even if there aren’t any State Tournaments. I think it’s important both physically and emotionally for the kids to be active, especially during the cold, winter months. Hopefully everyone stays safe and healthy! 6 WINTER SPORTS GUIDE 7

ANNOUNCER PROFILE: KEVIN KOCHMANN Years Broadcasting – 13 With all that is going on and with all of the uncertainty surrounding the status of the Basketball and Wrestling and Hockey season, what are your thoughts on the Winter Sports seasons for this year? As we begin the winter seasons, we remember what happened at the end of the last winter season. We dealt with the cancellation of tournaments, in some cases while they were going on. We saw students have championship dreams ripped from their hands. We saw our lives change. Now, we get a chance to have some activity. It looks different, and it sure feels different. I’m just happy that the kids get a chance to compete, and have an activity. I do hope that someday, we can fill the gym or the rink or the stands like we used to, and the energy of our games and matches can be what they used to be.
ANNOUNCER PROFILE: JACOB BIRKEMEYER How many years have you been broadcasting – 8 With all that is going on and with all of the uncertainty surrounding the status of the Basketball and Wrestling and Hockey season, what are your thoughts on the Winter Sports seasons for this year? – I think Winter Sports may be more important than ever before. With everything going on, I think players, coaches, and fans all benefit from playing winter sports. When we go to work and come home in the dark all Winter it drains people, plus add in all the restrictions we may or may not see regarding Covid, and being able to have a couple hours of entertainment to look forward to on a cold January night could help a lot. Whether in gyms, on the radio, or with our live video it is something that everyone can look forward to and enjoy and I hope we are able to provide that to everyone with our broadcast coverage.
ANNOUNCER PROFILE: JOE STETZ How many years have you been broadcasting – I’ve been in radio broadcasting for 4 years now. With all that is going on and with all of the uncertainty surrounding the status of the Basketball and Wrestling and Hockey season, what are your thoughts on the Winter Sports seasons for this year? - My thoughts going into the winter season are hopeful. I’m hopeful that the kids don’t lose a year of a sport they have a passion for. Especially the seniors looking for one last season to earn scholarships, and just one more year to hang out around their friends. I feel like the winter season will still go on, but maybe seeing how the fall season has gone so far this year. We need a better plan for the upcoming season, or we will be changing/canceling/postponing games just like the fall sports.
ANNOUNCER PROFILE: DEREK LEE ZIMMERMAN-GUYER How many years have you been broadcasting – Two With all that is going on and with all of the uncertainty surrounding the status of the Basketball and Wrestling and Hockey season, what are your thoughts on the Winter Sports seasons for this year?
I’ve been waiting to call any sport since March 11, so now that I’m hired full time at last, I’m ok with waiting however much longer. That being said, I’m anxious for basketball and wrestling to start. I have quite a bit of history with wrestling, and basketball is simply electric to call. I’m going to yell “Bang” so loudly after each 3-pointer. I’m particularly excited to call hockey, as we didn’t really have high school hockey down in the Kansas City, Missouri, area. 8 WINTER SPORTS GUIDE 9

ANNOUNCER PROFILE: SEAN BJERK How many years have you been broadcasting – 20 years With all that is going on and with all of the uncertainty surrounding the status of the Basketball and Wrestling and Hockey season, what are your thoughts on the Winter Sports seasons for this year? - My thoughts are that we are fortunate to have a chance to get the winter season underway. Although the season may not be a normal season, at least the kids will get a chance to play, and with any luck we can have an uninterrupted season. There are a lot of kids that have put in the time, and are looking forward to having a chance to play so I expect that we will see some great games, and matches all winter long.
ANNOUNCER PROFILE: DAWSON PETERSON How many years have you been broadcasting – 1 With all that is going on and with all of the uncertainty surrounding the status of the Basketball and Wrestling and Hockey season, what are your thoughts on the Winter Sports seasons for this year? – Well, when I speak with most coaches, a lot of them say that they are just happy to get to play because of everything that is happening. I feel the same way as a broadcaster. I’m just happy to be able to broadcast these games because we don’t know if it will be the last one for the year. If we have a full winter season, awesome. If it’s shortened, okay. But no matter what, I will make the most out of every single game and do my absolute best to bring excellent coverage every night because we don’t know when it could end and there are a lot of people this year who are unable to attend these games. I think every team Cougars12/18 Mahnomen/ Waubun 6:00 is going to have a lot of questions coming in. We might not have a lot of kids but the ones we do have 12/21 @ Lake Park-Audubon 6:00 will play for each other and make whatever sacrifices 1/5 @ NCE/UH 6:00 are necessary for our team to be successful. I’m just 1/8 @ Thief River Falls 6:00 hopeful that we will be able to play a full season and 1/12 Barnesville 6:00 that our girls can learn from their experiences and 1/15 @ Climax-Fisher 6:00 enjoy what I consider the best sport in the world! 1/18 Lake Park-Audubon 6:00 Your Pick(s) Sub Section Favorite: Henning, 1/21 @ Park Christian 6:00 Underwood, M-W 1/26 Fertile-Beltrami 6:00 Your Pick(s) Section Favorite: Parkers Prairie, Henning 1/29 @ Mahnomen/Waubun 6:00 Your Pick(s) Conference Favorite: Fosston, M-W, 2/2 @ Red Lake Falls 6:00 Ada-Borup 2/4 NCE/UH 6:00 Where are they now? We had virtually no off season in a year where we needed it perhaps more than any other year in the last 15-20 years. So, I’m not sure how things will go but I do know that the kids that play (we have really small numbers this year) will be ready to play hard and play with enthusiasm when the games start! We have the 2/22 Roseau 7:30 advantage of having a veteran group and guys that have played Varsity awhile. Defensively and on the boards we should be OK most nights, so if we can find some scoring help and get consistency from our key players it will be a good year. We’re not going to be a deep group but if we stay out of foul trouble that doesn’t always come into play, it’s always a tough schedule w/every night in the PTP a battle though. MINNESOTA STATE HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE ISSUES GUIDANCE FOLLOWING EXECUTIVE ORDER 20-99 In accordance with Executive Order 20-99 issued tonight by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Minnesota State High School League is providing guidance and information to the League’s more than 500 member schools. The Executive Order is in effect from 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 through Friday, Dec. 18.
In preparation for the implementation of the restrictions included in the order, section football play must be completed by the end of Friday. The volleyball regular season will also end on Friday. In working with stakeholders including member schools, LEAD Liaisons, the Return to Participation Task Force and Region Secretaries, additional flexibility is provided in the guidance for football and volleyball to complete their competitions.
Dance, in its second week of the season, will also stop in-person practice and competitions, effective late Friday. Other winter sports will have the start of their seasons delayed by this order.
“We recognize the recent rise in positive cases and the impacts on communities and schools. Our schools have been addressing positive cases and close contacts, adjusting learning models and making difficult decisions regarding programs,” League Executive Director Erich Martens said.
“We all know how important these programs are to students and to their mental and physical health and we all want students to participate. We believe League programs offered by our member schools provide the safest and most effective experiences and yet, at this time, we are required to take a pause. We look forward to returning to in-person participation in our winter sports and fine arts activities when these restrictions are lifted.”
The League will provide additional guidance to member schools by the end the week regarding winter sports and fine arts activities. In addition, League Staff will continue to work with others to study options for the remaining winter seasons as well as those scheduled to begin in the spring.
“The League will continue to study options to build a revised calendar of activities that meets our goals of providing the greatest possible experience in every one of the activities provided by the League,” Martens said. “We appreciate the excellent work of our schools and staff in following the guidance provided and implementing protocols that keep students, coaches, officials and others safe and we are confident that they will continue to do so when programs return.”
