The Turkey Train was started in Chattanooga by Karen Stone many years ago and has remained a popular and important community program. Here’s how it works: all students, teachers, madrichim, , and CJCRS Board Members are asked to bring in two small frozen turkeys. Students line up and pass the cold turkeys from one to another, until they reach a waiting truck, which will transport the turkeys to the Chattanooga Food Bank. Finally, a fine assortment of gleaming stones was amassed. Yet no craftsman was willing to set them into the crown, for they were all afraid that they’d damage or otherwise not do justice to their unparalleled beauty. Finally, one goldsmith accepted the job and asked for a month to work on the crown. For weeks he contemplated the gems and the crown, thinking of the best way to bring them together into a most stunning master- piece. Two days before the work was due, with trembling hands, he prepared himself to set the precious stones as he’d planned, but he was so nervous that he actually dropped the crown. Realizing that he wouldn’t be able to complete the job, he called his assistant, a simple but capable boy, into his workshop. Showing him the crown and the stones, he told the young fellow what needed to be done. While he stood outside—afraid to look—the assistant deftly followed his master’s instructions, and the crown was completed. There are many ways of understanding this tale, and many lessons that can be derived. First Day of Chabad Hebrew School! Taking Mitzvot in memory of 16 The Shofar October 2016 HADASSAH NEWS Hadassah Hadassah Mah Jongg and Mojitos Event Happenings

by Cathryn Cohen Chattanooga Chapter Reporter Chapter

Fun and games highlighted Mah Jongg and Mojitos, a yummy variation of the annual membership event held this year on September 11. With baked goods, sliced beets and sour cream, dips, crackers and so much more, there was plenty to eat and drink during the late af- ternoon event. A special surprise was the appearance of the President of Southern Region, Bonnie Boring and her delightful daughter, Hallie. Hallie may not have been old enough to partake of the Mojitos but she’s a killer Mah Jongg player and will be a force to reckon with as she grows into a role of action and advocacy in coming years! Also, Hadassah hosted a theater outing for a performance of “Fiddler on the Roof,” presented by the Chattanooga Theater Circle on Sunday, September 18. It was an afternoon of entertainment and camaraderie! Southern Region, originally formed in 1926, evolved to its present form in 1938. It now includes 17 Chapters in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, parts of Bonnie Boring, President of Hadassah Southern Region, made a Louisiana, Alabama and the panhandle of Florida. Chattanooga was so fortunate surprise visit to Mah Jongg and Mojitos, with daughter, Hallie that Bonnie was able to chop up and disperse a huge tree blocking her driveway from a recent storm so that she could escape her home in Knoxville and take part in the event. The chapter also gifted two new members with Annual Memberships, Carla Nixon and Pam Miller. Welcome aboard new friends and sisters! Stay tuned in coming months as this column will devote space to a major force in our mission: medical research. According to hadassah.org, “There is an assumption that a physician can keep abreast of the latest developments and scientific knowledge solely by reading the professional literature. That assumption is unfounded. Although professional literature is widely available, cutting-edge medicine practiced at a high level of distinction is found only where physicians are involved in active research. “The Hadassah Medical Organization’s perspective embraces a broad view of the needs of the country and the field of medicine. Holding a deep convic- tion that research is the essence of medicine, Hadassah is committed to advancing and developing the field of medicine in by translating research insights into practical advances that not only prolong but enhance the quality of life. “In light of this, Hadassah has set excellence in research as one of the highest of its goals and made research activity its norm. Hadassah is committed to encouraging its physicians to participate in research and to incorporate them into both the Israeli and the international world of research.” As we approach the end of summer and beginning of fall, our thoughts turn to the upcoming High Holidays and the time to wish our friends and families a heartfelt L’Shana Tovah. Erev Rosh Hashanah falls on Sunday, October 2 this year and, as always, Hadassah has an inspiring opportunity to donate and to wish our loved ones a Happy New Year.
