NCORE 2017 Program Addendum NCORE 2017 Program Addendum SESSION DESCRIPTION CORRECTED – #2204 Approaches and Challenges to Implementing Opportunities for Staff Development in the Areas of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in the UW-Madison Division of Enrollment Management This session should particularly benefit participants who are interested in providing sustainable structures for staff learning and dialogue in the areas of inclusion, diversity, and equity. The Division of Enrollment Management (DEM) Engagement, Inclusion and Diversity (EID) Committee is part of a broad structure of “Equity and Diversity Committees” within individual departments, colleges and units at UW- Madison. Two years ago, the EID Committee created a social justice learning community for colleagues within their campus division. The goal of this session is to highlight the EID Committee approaches and challenges to create space for social justice learning and dialogue across the DEM offices of Admissions and Recruitment, the Registrar, Student Financial Aid, and the Student Information System. UPDATED DESCRIPTION – #2217 The Light. The Light. One Will Perish Without the Light., Wednesday, May 31 – 10:00-11:30, Room 203B. We are in a time of grave danger paralleled by great opportunity for imagination, vision and creativity. White supremacy and white nationalism have been legitimized and celebrated. We feel the turmoil, and we must seize the opportunity. We will come together to explore through a film, Light in the Shadows, that shows how the conversation on race and inequity breaks down. We will also push our respective communication edges, through a process called strategic questioning, to help us shift communication in ways that we can support equity and inclusion. SESSION NOTICE -- #2606 Protesting or Protecting: Language, Culture, and Advocacy in the Standing Rock Sioux Debate, Wednesday, May 31 – 4:45-6:00 pm, Room 108 The purpose of this session is to provide a holistic and historical understanding what has happened with the Standing Rock Sioux’s case against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the water protection actions surrounding the Dakota Access Pipeline. This presentation will allow for the audience to deconstruct the history of Native American movements leading up to and including the Standing Rock Sioux’s case against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The presenters will give a brief historical brief of the socio-political movements surrounding Native rights, but also a more in depth understanding of what is happening and has happened within this particular movement. Ideally participants will have a greater understanding that all movements are seen through lenses, and those lenses are informed by the audience’s available knowledge and motivations. Heather Kind-Keppel, University Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, University of Wisconsin-Parkside— Kenosha, Wisconsin Sedelta Oohsahwee, Former Senior Advisor, Office of Tribal Relations, United States Department of Agriculture — Washington, D.C. Over the past decade, universities across the country have engaged in comprehensive program reviews for each student affairs functional unit. As a scholar who is often called to serve as the external reviewer for program reviews within multicultural affairs, the presenter has often found the departments voicing legitimate complaints regarding the required use of CAS standards. The activism that grounds the history of university multicultural affairs calls for these offices to purposefully be different in practice, services, relationships, environment, and community involvement than other student service units. While many of the CAS standards are undoubtedly important and necessary for the assessment of multicultural affairs, some of these departments (and specifically cultural centers) may need to expand on CAS standards during their program reviews/self-studies. This session will share two viable resources that more effectively address the work of multicultural affairs: The Five Point Plan (Programming structure for multicultural centers) and the Principles of Transformative Education (Standards that are specific to issues of racial and social justice, inclusion, and diversity). SESSION CANCELLED – #3514 Faculty Reflection as Self Work Praxis SESSION CANCELLED – #4109 From Student Non-Violent Coordination Committee (SNCC) to MIZZOU: Effective Student Activism SESSION SCHEDULE CORRECTION – #4519 The World Is Yours: Reflections of A Global RAPtivist is scheduled for Friday, June 2, 3:00-4:30 p.m. SESSION SCHEDULE CORRECTION – #4520 Is Race a Choice? After nearly two years, Texas Gov. Rick Perry would sign House Bill 174 recognizing the last Friday in September as American Indian Heritage Day. This session will address how Peggy Larney and her small group of supporters built the necessary momentum to nurture HB 174 into Texas law. This session re-traces the successful grassroots navigation of HB 174. Particular focus will be on the strategic make-up of the original grassroots committee, including the partnership with UT-Arlington. It is our hope that this session will inspire and fuel impactful community efforts. Thus, this session will benefit participants who are interested in grassroots efforts, those who work in community service organizations, those who are interested in University / school community partnerships, and those who are concerned with ongoing Native reclamation efforts at the state level. • K. Michelle Flaunts Her Versatility at 'More Issues Than Vogue' Album Release Concert in New York City
March 31, 2016 K. Michelle Flaunts Her Versatility at 'More Issues Than Vogue' Album Release Concert in New York City Memphis multi-hyphenate K. Michelle celebrated the release of her third album, More Issues Than Vogue, with a full concert on Tuesday night (March 29) at New York City's Webster Hall. Sporting a black one-piece that would make Wonder Woman jealous, the singer commanded the stage, proving she’s more than a reality TV personality. That’s not to say her set wasn’t loaded with outrageous soundbites. “You may have broken up with him, but you forgot that you also broke up with that dick,” she lamented about no-good lovers in between songs. Before launching into the piano-driven slow jam, she also said, “On my nightstand, I have my dildo, a Bible and my pills -- everything that keeps me calm. That’s where “Nightstand” came from.” She also started the party with the T-Pain assisted jam "Mindful" and threw it back to her 2013 debut with the raunchy "Pay My Bills." The evening carried its more somber moments, as well. At one point, K. Michelle gave her back-up singers the chance to shine, allowing them each to sing a solo as they banded together for an impressive medley that included Adele’s “Hello” and Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody.” She also noted how she took pride in hand-picking each backup vocalist. She even delivered earlier fan favorites like "Ain't You" off Issues as well as "Maybe I Should Call" off her 2014 effort Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? The most vulnerable moment of the evening came when K.

  • 16 Things to Do in the D.C. Area This Weekend
The Washington Post Going Out Guide 16 things to do in the D.C. area this weekend By Going Out Guide staff April 4 at 8:00 AM Friday, April 5 ‘Junk’ at Arena Stage: The 1987 film “Wall Street” gave us the mantra: “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good.” Now, the main character in Pulitzer-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar’s “Junk” declares, “Debt is an asset.” The play, opening at Arena Stage, flashes back to the financial world of the 1980s and is inspired by real corporate raiders. Directed by Jackie Maxwell, “Junk” zeroes in on a brash financier and his efforts at a hostile takeover, going after a family-owned manufacturer. Through May 5. $56$105. [15 things to do around the D.C. area in April, including two of the city’s coolest homegrown music festivals] Evoken at Atlas Brew Works: Since 1992, Evoken has been a pioneer and purveyor of funeral doom metal, a genre that’s exactly what it says on the tin. This is metal at its gloomiest, with John Paradiso’s gravel-chewing growl leading the way through the muck. The band’s latest album “Hypnagogia” takes its name from the transition from wakefulness to sleep, and while the sludgy tempos might slow down your nervous system, such double-length dirges as “Valorous Consternation” and “The Weald Of Perished Men” aren’t built for slumber. Evoken kicks off the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest at the District’s best venue for both: the Atlas Brew Works tank room. 7 p.m.

  • Quick Lists: Enriched Playlist Embeddings for Future Playlist Recommendation
Quick Lists: Enriched Playlist Embeddings for Future Playlist Recommendation Brett Vintch iHeartRadio New York City, New York [email protected] Abstract. Recommending playlists to users in the context of a digital music service is a difficult task because a playlist is often more than the mere sum of its parts. We present a novel method for generating playlist embeddings that are invariant to playlist length and sensitive to local and global track ordering. The embeddings also capture information about playlist sequencing, and are enriched with side information about the playlist user. We show that these embeddings are useful for generating next-best playlist recommendations, and that side information can be used for the cold start problem. Keywords: playlist recommendation, playlist embeddings 1 Introduction Playlists are a common medium for music consumption and dissemination, and thus an important domain for the development of recommendation engines. While playlists are composed of individual tracks, the collection itself can be a distinct entity. Each track can be associated with multiple genres, moods, or concepts, and it is a track's context that defines its meaning and interpretation. For example, a Rage Against the Machine track could be included in both a rock genre playlist and in a protest song playlist, and the overall playlist context could plausibly affect a user's reaction to the track. In this work, we present a new method to embed playlists into a high dimensional space that is sensitive to local track context, and is naturally suited to recommending next-best playlists. To fully capture the complexity of playlists, we believe that embeddings should meet a number of criteria.

  • Online Slang Terms and Acronyms
Online Slang Terms and Acronyms PARENTS have been given a helping hand to spot the telltale signs of online grooming and abuse. Nottinghamshire Police has issued a list of secret slang terms and acronyms which teens regularly use to communicate online. They include warning flags such as CU46, meaning ‘see you for sex’, LMIRL which stands for ‘let’s meet in real life’ and NIFOC, meaning ‘naked in front of a computer’. The list of 200 phrases has been published as part of Safer Internet Day which took place earlier this month. The force is warning mum and dads to familiarize themselves with the phrases which could also flag up issues surrounding mental health, sex, and drug usage. Hashtags which are deemed cause for concern include #ana for, anorexia #deb for depression and #sue for suicide. A Nottinghamshire Police spokesperson said: ‘It can sometimes seem like teenagers are speaking a different language and, while it’s tempting to try and keep them from interacting online, the reality is that it’s as much a part of their life as eating their dinner or brushing their teeth. ‘Instead, you should make sure you’re aware of the risks of some of the main social networking sites and have the relevant conversations with your children.’ Children’s charity NSPCC is also urging parents to keep up with the latest slang and hashtags to help keep their youngsters safe. An NSPCC spokesman said: ‘One of the best ways for parents to keep their children safe online and spot risks is to open up conversations about their online lives.
