Summary of visit

The Faculty of Humanities is looking to build a select number of partnerships across the globe in which to develop a comprehensive and meaningful relationship that focuses on exploring potential research, teaching & learning and PGR opportunities. This is in line with the Universities Internationalisation strategy to support the university’s core and enabling goals; world leading research, outstanding student experience, and global reputation.

Overall focus is to discuss possible Joint Phd Programmes; to continue to support the PGR exchange scheme; to discuss operational aspects of the bi-lateral research fund.

Recent engagement with

The Faculty of Humanities has been actively working with the University of Copenhagen over the last 2 years. Below is a summary of recent engagement:

Previous visits:

Below is a summary of the recent visits led by the Faculty of Humanities to the University of Copenhagen.

- October 2016: Keith Brown Dean and Vice-President led a visit to Copenhagen with the senior leadership team to explore possible routes of activity

- September 2017: Oliver Richmond, AD internationalisation; Joanne Kaiserman, Head of PGR and Internationalisation Support Services; Rosie Haynes, International Project Officer – visited to

1

finalise the PGR exchanges, discuss possible joint research fund, and possible joint PGR programme.

- May 2018: to discuss operational aspects of PGR exchanges and bi-lateral fund; to further discuss joint PGR schemes.

PGR Exchanges:

In November 2017, a PGR Faculty wide exchange programme was finalised and signed. This exchange was inclusive for all students at the Faculty of Humanities at Manchester, and the Faculty of Law; Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities at Copenhagen.

Manchester’s call closed in January 2018, and one student was successfully selected to take part in the programme. The student will be visiting the Faculty of Humanities in September 2018 for two months. Students taking part in this exchange are funded via the internationalisation fund.

The University of Copenhagen have yet to open their call.

Joint PhD Programme:

During the September 2017 visit, there was a brief discussion with Law, Social Sciences and Humanities on the opportunity for joint-PhD programmes. The University of Copenhagen currently has a number of Joint Phd programmes with various institutions around Europe – including Latvia and Iceland. They were supportive of a joint-phd programme and we are keen to explore this further.

Bi-lateral Research fund:

The Faculty of Humanities is looking to develop a joint seed-corn fund to develop greater research linkages between the Faculty of Humanities (UoM) and priority faculties of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences (UoC). Following discussion in September 2017, we are in the process of finalising the details of this fund. Initially, it will look like it will launch with a specific focus on political sciences at UoC, but remain faculty wide at UoM. The funding is for around £12k, and is focused on supporting mobility.

School of Social Sciences:

The School of Social Sciences has seen a number of recent activities with the University of Copenhagen, particularly in relation to political science. The HSIF Internationalisation fund recently awarded the school with funding to support a PGR exchange/workshop event which saw up to 5 students visit for a duration of 3 days each.
