“Created in the Image of God”

Celebrating Catholic Education Week

April 29-May 4, 2007

Our Catholic schools are unique faith-centered communities, which integrate thinking and believing in ways that encourage intellectual growth, nurture faith and inspire action. The Toronto Catholic District School Board is a community of educators, but even more importantly it is a community of faith. It is our shared belief in Jesus Christ and in Catholic teachings and values that binds us together. No matter where we come from, we recognize that we are all members of the one body of Christ.

We are blessed to work in an environment that is filled with the energy and spirit of youth and children. The rich diversity of our student population and school communities gives us the impetus to learn about, and develop an appreciation for, the many cultures, languages and ethnicities that make an indelible imprint on our daily lives. Our mission calls us to educate each and every student to his or her full potential by focusing not just on the basics. Through a Christ-centered vision, and in partnership with parents, parishes and communities, we are called upon to serve students from diverse cultural, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds in Canada’s largest and most dynamic city.

As we celebrate Catholic Education Week, let us look deep within ourselves to recognize the image of God, while we also look for God’s image within our colleagues, our students and our neighbours.

This is indeed a time of celebration as we reflect upon the many accomplishments of our students and our achievements as a Catholic school system, and to focus also on the future of Catholic education.

I thank all of you for your continued commitment to the Toronto Catholic District School Board and for your ongoing support of publicly-funded Catholic education in the province of Ontario.

While pursuing his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees at the University of Toronto, he taught visual arts and art history in MSSB high schools. His passion for art was well known and inspired many art students. In 1983, he became art consultant for the Board, becoming a mentor to many art teachers. In the mid 1990's he was appointed superintendent of education with the TCDSB and held that position until his death. New centre opens in Malvern 04/17/07 Scarborough – The Mirror

The federal government showed some support for northeast Scarborough last week, opening a Service Canada Centre in Malvern and funding a youth employment program for the area. The centre, visited by Human Resources Minister Monte Solberg in Malvern Town Centre on Tapscott Road, is open six days a week and can help young people with career planning, training opportunities and a job bank.

In a statement, Service Canada thanked the Malvern Community Coalition and local schools for their advice on what the centre could provide and acknowledged students of Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School who painted a mural there. "Giving residents better access to government services makes Toronto a more inclusive city," Mayor David Miller added in a release.

Solberg also announced his Conservative government is giving $364,376 to the Malvern Youth Community Employment Program, a one-year backing of a service the city has funded for two and a half years. In an interview, MYCEP's co-ordinator Lance Williams said the program started in 2004 as a response to violence in Malvern. Joblessness among youth was seen as a major problem in the area, he said. "There was nothing here for them."

Since then, the program, which provides a wage subsidy and training allowance to employers, has helped find jobs for more than 170 local youth. The number to call for more information is 416-298-4566. The Malvern Service Canada Centre number is 416-954-2715.

St. Stephen's students join race for zero waste CYNTHIA REASON 04/13/07 (Etobicoke – The Guardian)

Why do so many people use plastic grocery bags? Do we really need gas receipts? Why not pour milk from a jug? Is all of that packaging really necessary? These are just a sample of the questions that have made the seventh grade class at St. Stephen's Catholic School go 'hmmmm' since embarking on The Race to Zero Waste campaign in January. Under the guidance of Vice-principal Roy Fernandes, the students have undertaken a number of research and awareness projects to reduce the amount of waste generated in their school, in their communities and in the city as a whole. "We started off with the students doing a waste audit here at the school of all the garbage left over after lunch hour. What they found was that there was a lot of unnecessary packaging showing up in the trash," Fernandes said. That made them curious, so they decided to do a little experiment of their own. Popcorn companies, the students noted, tell people that they need the plastic wrapping around microwavable popcorn bags to keep it fresh. So the class kept one popcorn package tightly sealed in its original wrapping while taking another out of the plastic and left both to sit for a month. Then they did a taste test. Only 20 per cent of the students could tell the difference between the two. Those results spurred a letter writing campaign, in which students petitioned 30 companies with excessive packaging practices to consider changing to a more environmentally sound way of doing things. "We heard back from a couple of the companies who said they were going to try to make a change, so it's little things like that," Fernandes said of their accomplishments. While the class has been doing its part to try to reduce school waste by exchanging plastic sandwich bags for reusable containers and opting for refillable water bottles over drink boxes, the students' next task is to try to change the wasteful habits of their classmates in the rest of the school. On Friday, April 20 the Grade 7 class will present a Zero Waste event to educate the rest of the school and community about the work they've been doing. The event will feature the Etobicoke premiere of What a Lot of Garbage, a 30-minute play focusing on the environment, government, business and consumer perspectives on Zero Waste. An interactive quiz show will follow, and then guest speakers Sarah McGaughey, an environmentalist who is trying to create absolutely zero waste in her household, Celia Jackson from Turtle Island Recycling, and Art Corbett from Harmony Milk, a company that produces refillable glass milk bottles, will take to the podium. The event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. at the school, 55 Golfdown Dr. in north Etobicoke. For more information on the event and the students' work, go to www.tcdsb.org/environment/zerowaste

“Eat My Bubbles”

Each year children from grades 3 to 8 participate in the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s Swim Meet Invitational. This year St Antoine Daniel Catholic School was proud to be the hosting school to coordinate this event at the Etobicoke Olympium, which was held on April 14th & 15th.

Over 2,500 family members and friends watched as 800 swimmers from 25 schools across the Toronto-area compete. This year was even more exciting as children showed what it meant to “Eat My Bubbles” as families cheered on their favourite team.

The goal of this volunteer-based event is to succeed in providing the participants with a positive experience, visitors an exciting venue, and for students, an enriched school community.

Storytelling at James Cardinal McGuigan

On March 30th, 2007 Jan Andrews, a Canadian storyteller, was invited to JCM to share her wealth of stories from around the world. Her repertoire of folk material was engaging and inspiring; Jan’s stories enabled students from various English classes to experience both the power of the oral tradition and the depth of wisdom made available through the folktale genre.

Students were also involved in a discussion of what hearing the stories meant to them; this allowed them to find their own voices by reflecting upon their own histories and traditions.

JCM is grateful to Jan Andrews for sending JCM students on a spellbinding journey they can hold in their memories and use for the rest of their lives!

Poetry through Hip Hop at JCM Amy Forristal, a York University student and a volunteer from an organization called LOVE (“Leave Out Violence”), contributed to JCM’s grade 10 poetry unit by presenting an interactive Hip Hop workshop on April 3rd. Amy is a creative and passionate spoken word artist; she specializes in writing her own lyrics and rhyming them to a particular beat, usually a rhythmic jazz compilation of music. She speaks out against violence, social issues, personal struggles, and the inspiration found around her. Students were given opportunities to create their own poetry by creating a list of favourite rhyming words. With Amy’s encouragement and her “scaffolding” approach, students began linking words into dynamic sentences, creating their own, insightful rhymes. Some even got up and presented their work to their peers! Amy’s success in the classroom is due largely to the inclusive, comfortable atmosphere she creates – a place where all students can write, reflect, practice and be proud of their poetry. Thank-you, Amy, for giving us an unforgettable experience!

IMPLEMENTING WRITING STRATEGIES USING MINISTRY LICENSED TECHNOLOGY May 10th, St. Josaphat School May 28th. Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Rm. 203 SMART Ideas Concept-Mapping Software gives students the power to brainstorm, think visually and turn complex ideas into colourful concept maps quickly and easily. Using the proven power of visual learning, it helps students strengthen critical thinking, comprehension and writing skills across the curriculum. Students can use built-in templates or create their own visual maps to represent concepts and relationships that can easily be turned into outlines for writing reports and completing projects. They can also insert pictures or clip art, record ideas, add levels, link to more information & publish web pages. Draft:Builder moves students fluidly through planning, organizing and preparing a first draft for any curriculum area. It breaks down the writing process into three distinct skills: planning and concept mapping, note-taking and resource citing, and composing a first draft. Each view facilitates the writing task for students by providing support appropriate for each task. In addition, a split-screen view remains constant, reflecting all of the work students have done, helping them transfer information and build on ideas. Write:Outloud is a word processor that gives immediate voice feedback as students type words, sentences and paragraphs. Read tools can be used to read text that students have produced or text that has been brought in from other sources. Co:Writer is a word prediction program that provides the student with rate enhancement, grammar and vocabulary support. Co:Writer works with many word processors. Clicker 5 is a word processor with picture support and onscreen writing grids. The on-screen writing grids can have letters, words, sentences and/or pictures. Teachers can also create picture-adapted reading and writing activities. This workshop is an introduction to Ministry Licensed software and how these programs support writing strategies. During this workshop participants will: learn to use the word processing tools in Write:Outloud; create a short writing assignment for a student and track writing progress; learn how word prediction can support writing and vocabulary usage; develop a concept map for a topic in Smart Ideas, develop a writing outline using Draft:Builder; and explore a variety of writing grids in Clicker 5 including word banks and sentence building grids.

SYMBOL-BASED SOFTWARE FOR LITERACY DEVELOPMENT May 22nd, Our Lady of Mount Carmel – Rm. 203 There is a growing trend towards using symbols to support literacy. Symbols connected to text can help students gain more meaning from words, motivate them to engage with text and help build their confidence as readers. There is a growing selection of symbol-based software programs available today and making sense the features of these tools and how those features support different tasks and different student needs can be overwhelming. Join us in this hands-on lab to explore the features of symbol-based software including Boardmaker, Writing with Symbols and Clicker. During this workshop, participants will receive an overview of how symbols can be used to support literacy, principals of good design when creating symbol-based literacy materials, an overview of the features of each piece of software and hands-on creation of symbol-based materials using each of the programs.

ACTIVE READING AND COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES USING TECHNOLOGY May 18th, Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Rm. 203 May 29th, St. Josaphat School Active reading and comprehension strategies are the key to understanding, retaining and applying what is learned through reading. Active reading and comprehension are achieved by using a set of key skills before, during and after reading new material. These include skills such as identifying main ideas, asking pre-reading questions, identifying new vocabulary and summarizing what has been learned. Technology tools can provide students with digital formats of text as well as powerful tools for using key reading strategies. Examples of such tools are concept maps, reading outlines, highlighter pens, footnotes, locked text, cued misspelling, spell checkers, and speech feedback. This workshop will provide an overview of key reading and comprehension strategies, and link those strategies to specific technology tools. Technology addressed will include: Kurzweil 3000, Write:Outloud Ministry Licensed Software, Smart Ideas, and Writing with Symbols.

STUDY SKILLS & RESEARCH STRATEGIES USING ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY May 23rd, Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Rm. 203 May 30th, St. Josaphat School Students can use the features and tools of Kurzweil 3000 to improve their understanding of textbook material, better prepare themselves for tests or research using proven study strategies. There is also a growing set of tools or utilities that are built into web browsers and WebPages that make them more accessible and efficient to use. With the movement towards Universal Design for Learning in education, teachers need to be aware of how to make research on the internet more access to all students. This hands-on workshop will provide an overview of a number of study and note-taking strategies (e.g. K-W-L, SQ4R) and also focus on the tools and utilities that make website more accessible. Participants will learn how to streamline online research, organize research material using tabs and bookmarks and receive a sampling of wonderful websites for research including web quests and databases.
