The Life Is Good Party is a totally all-inclusive, fun, free, open, and safe party where dancing, socializing, eating, and doing all three at once are encouraged! Ticknor Lounge, Boylston Hall.  Sunday, February 14, 4:30PM – Boy on a Dolphin. made her Hollywood debut as a Greek sponge diver who discovers an ancient statute of a boy on a dolphin at the bottom of the Aegean Sea. The ensuing battle over the fate of the statue, waged by a corrupt treasure hunter (played with wily aplomb by ) and an American archaeologist working in the interests of the Greek state (played by Alan Ladd), becomes an allegory of cultural guardianship and national stewardship in the post-WWII world. A conflicted Loren, caught between the two men and the ideals they represent, symbolizes the instability of Greece following its liberation from Nazi occupation and simmering civil war between communist and anti-communist forces. Filmed in Cinemascope on location in and , the great pleasures here, aside from the truly engaging intrigue, are the wonderful scenes of Ladd and Loren striding through the ruins on the Acropolis, the vitality and physicality of Loren's performance, and, especially, 's Oscar-nominated score, which evokes the enchantment of the ancient Greek landscape and mystery of the sea. Harvard Film Archive, 24 Quincy St.  Tuesday, February 16, 7:30-9:30PM – Comedy, Physicality, and Ludic Dance Gestures. In a workshop format, Jonathon Appels will introduce materialist and physicalized notions of the comic. Beginning with simple jokes and toys, he will work choreographically by directing the actions in the room to note differing responses to forms of embodiment of humor. How does one know whether the comic has conjoined itself to our movements? What is this sense of physical agility and playfulness? Guests may include a ballerina and a Tai-Chi teacher. Secondly, Dr. Appels opens the question as to why, even though we often think of dance as playful, comedy remains so rare especially in ballet and modern dance. In what parts of the body is humor more likely to be embodied (rather than simply represented)? Why does the consolidation of the comic within dance choreography often end up as a theatrical gesture? The question remains as to whether the ludic gesture has a range of interpretive or reflective capacity within the world of dance. A few passages from Bateson, Wittgenstein, Proust, and Merleau-Ponty will tie together the focus of the seminar. There will also be a contribution toward recent research on well-being and happiness.
