Community Foundation and New Opportunities 2013 Scholars Yearbook

Helping the Community I am honored to be a recipient of the Community Foundation Scholar award. Your generous support is helping me to fulfill a lifelong dream of going to college. With a higher education, I hope to stand out as an Hispanic female role model and reach out to troubled youth and impoverished communities. My determination and drive might help me reach my goals but your generosity through this scholarship guarantees me an opportunity and for that you will always be remembered.

Oklahoma City Community Foundation Scholarship Staff

Our staff consists of dedicated professionals who not only oversee the five programs of the Trustee Scholarship Initiative, but also the state’s largest, independent scholarship program. Through the Initiative and more than 120 scholarship endowment funds, we award more than 700 awards a year. In academic year 2012, we awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarships and awards to 707 deserving students.

Anna-Faye Rose has served as the scholarship program administrator since 1995 and 2013 marks her final year in this role. Rick Fernandez joined the scholarship staff in 2012 and is responsible for the Trustee Scholarship Initiative, the Central Guidance Counselor Network and works with donors who are interested in establishing a scholarship endowment fund. Wanda Minter has worked for the Community Foundation since 1998 and moved to the scholarship program team in 2011. She works with many of the scholarship funds and assists recipients with claiming their award. Megan Hornbeek joined the Oklahoma City Community Foundation staff in 2013 and is providing assistance with the scholarship program.

Congratulations! We are pleased to welcome you to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation today to celebrate your academic achievements.

At the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, we seek ways to help the community and there is nothing more rewarding than providing encouragement and support through scholarships. We are able to award these scholarships thanks to generous donors including those listed on pages 4-5. It is because of their desire to help others that we are able to award these scholarships to deserving students like you who are ready to take the next step in your education.

Today, we also celebrate the 15th year of our Trustee Scholarship Initiative. This Initiative was created to encourage more students in central Oklahoma to further their education after high school. To date, the Initiative has helped more than 4,000 students pursue continued education through the programs highlighted on page 2.

This year does mark the end of Anna-Faye Rose’s role as the scholarship program administrator, a position she’s held since 1995. Under her tutelage, the program has grown to be the largest independent scholarship program in Oklahoma. We will miss her professionalism and support but wish her all the best.

We hope you enjoy this yearbook and that over the years, it will remind you and your family of your academic success and that the Oklahoma City Community Foundation believes in you.

Good luck in your future endeavor. We encourage you to stay in touch with us and keep us updated on your successes. And remember, go to class!

Founded in 1998, the Trustee Scholarship Initiative was established to encourage more students in central Oklahoma to further their education after high school. In addition to scholarships, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation Board of Trustees also established the Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network to help accomplish this goal. To date, the Trustee Scholarship Initiative has awarded more than $4.5 million in scholarship funds to more than 4,000 students in central Oklahoma. Below are summaries of the Initiative’s programs:

High school guidance counselors attended the Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network spring workshop held at the Intergenerational Computer Center on the Oklahoma City University campus. Free workshops are held twice a year to help counselors stay informed on the latest college admissions and financial aid practices. The Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network An important component in the Oklahoma City Community Foundation’s Trustee Scholarship Initiative is the Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network, which provides training and support for high school guidance counselors at 51 public and private high schools in central Oklahoma.

Realizing the important role these counselors fill, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation provides important resources through the network. For many of these counselors, the information offered through two annual continuing education workshops provides the only opportunity to learn about current college admission issues and financial aid opportunities. In addition, we coordinate campus visits for counselors to universities, colleges and technology centers in Oklahoma and surrounding states. As an added incentive, each year we provide at least one Community Foundation Scholars award to each of the high schools whose guidance counselor participated in the activities. 2013 Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network ASTEC Charter School – Jill Carson Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School – Sandy Nedbalek – Carlann Miller – Jamie Butler Capitol Hill High School – Ashlie Wagner Millwood High School – Richard Smith Carl Albert High School – Lora Souza Moore High School – Nakia McCarrell Casady School – Josh Bottomly Mount St. Mary Catholic High School – Sarah Whisenant Centennial High School – Jocelyn Trager – Paula Buckmaster Choctaw High School – Cormiere Bishop – Katherine Cortest Christian Heritage Academy – Troop Bullard – Phyllis Michaud Classen School of Advanced Studies – Robin Lindsey Northeast Academy – Lois Coleman Crooked Oak High School – Kelly Farley Northwest Classen High School – Jordan Dodson Deer Creek High School – Cindy McCachern Oklahoma Christian Academy – Sherry Deichman – Barry Millican Oklahoma Christian Schools – Sharon Jones Douglass High School – Tina Williams Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics – Gary Salwierak Edmond Memorial High School – Carol Doherty Piedmont High School – Cathy Earnest – Stephanie Locke – Brenda Stinnett Edmond Santa Fe High School – Deanna Fleck Putnam City North High School – Dee Dee Stafford – Sheila Seewald Putnam City West High School – Ashley Wittrock Emerson Alternative High School – Jane Taylor Santa Fe South High School – Danny Boyd Guthrie High School – Annie Chadd Southeast High School – Evon Finklea Harding Charter Preparatory School – Linda Marshall – Lisa Shubert Harding Fine Arts Center – Celestia Stacy – Petra Woodard Harrah High School – Amber Clark U.S. Grant High School – Debbie Brown Heritage Hall – Marshall Gray Western Heights High School – Stephen Coley John Marshall High School – Sherita Gibson Westmoore High School – Carole Carter Jones High School – Curtis D. 16 | Oklahoma City Community Foundation What is the Oklahoma City Community Foundation?

We are a 501(c)(3) public charity that offers the maximum tax benefit for charitable giving. As a “community” foundation we accept gifts from a wide range of local individuals, families, businesses and organizations to benefit existing endowments or create new funds. There are more than 800 community foundations in the United States.

We were established in 1969 by community leaders as a way for anyone to make a lasting difference through charitable giving. People create funds at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation for the benefit of the community both now and in the future. For these donors we administer a variety of funds including:

. Scholarship & Award Funds that benefit worthy students seeking additional education or training. . Advised Funds allow an individual or family to recommend grants to benefit a favorite nonprofit organization or project. . Endowments for nonprofit organizations create an annual stream of income for organizations.

We also have funds established by donors that allow our Trustees to meet changing needs and opportunities within the community. In all, we administer more than 1,000 funds.
