MESSAGE

The class that entered in 1959 is now finishing four years at Gonzaga. Its deeds augur well for the years ahead as we begin the last quarter of our first century.

For the 240 members of this class have promised a gift to the

University of $100.00 each, spread out over the next five years.

Before they have even gone they have returned.

The Class of 1912 last year on their Golden Jubilee gave to the

University a purse for $60,000. And we shall always treasure their long and warm and wonderful memory.

But the Class of '63, without time to soften some of the hardness and duress of college life, with little experience yet and few resources, have still said, "We see the vision of Gonzaga. It is a vision of our selves, and we pledge here and now to make it come true."

May God bless this class. Only time will tell what a shattering event this gift and this tribute from the heart has been. No succeed ing class can dare fall short and some will be challenged to do more.

And these young men and women have learned the prodigious truth that in giving lies the secret of joy.

Tired, angry young voices no longer raged. The glow of the mid night oil was extinguished, and the remarkable tonic known as the MILITARY BALL presented a cure-all for the "after-the-midterm-blues." 93 Gonzaga's ever-improving Bulldog team celebrated the University's last season as an independent competitor by giv ing Coach Hank Anderson a comeback 14-12 winning season. This marked only the second time in his 12-year career as Gon zaga head coach that Anderson has had two straight winning seasons. The 1961-62 quintet also posted a 14-12 mark. Ander son's career at GU now shows 165 victories against 161 losses. The 1962-63 club might easily have been the best Anderson ever had, the way it finished the season. The Zags played their last three games against Idaho State, Seattle U. and the Univer sity of Idaho, teams which had already combined to beat them five times during the season. Coach Anderson tried to reverse that discouraging trend by throwing a fast-moving four man zone defense against Idaho State and its star Art Crump. The strategy, along with the play of 6-8 Jim Dixon worked beautifully and Gonzaga waltzed to a 76-51 victory. Dixon tallied 20 and Crump 18, most of the latter's coming in the game's final minutes. Three days later the NCAA bound Seattle Chieftains arrived in the Spokane Coliseum and Anderson employed the same de fense on ail-American Eddie Miles, the "Man with the Golden Arm." It worked. Miles was held down most of the way and the proud Chiefs dropped a 75-73 decision to the fired-up Bulldogs.

CAPTAIN BILL WILSON, GUARD

RICH JUAREZ, GUARD

96 Dixon's play in the Seattle game was his finest as he scored 26 points and out-rebounded Seattle's John Tresvant, Ernie Dunstan and Miles combined. The Zags came within five minutes of staging a major upset in their season finale at Moscow, Idaho, against the talented U. of Idaho Vandals. Billy Wilson, GU's 6-2 team captain, had an incredible evening by scoring 37 points. That represented a personal high for Bill at Gonzaga and was the individual high by a Gonzagan this season. Anderson's boys had a steady season, dropping two or more consecutive games but twice. Early in the season they lost five in a row to Idaho, Utah, Washington State, Idaho State and Weber. That gave them a 2-5 record and they quickly evened it with three pre-Christmas tournament wins. The other time the 'Dogs lost two in a row came in January when they traveled to Seattle and Corvallis, Oregon, to meet nationally-ranked Seattle U. and Oregon State. Final season statistics gave Dixon, potentially a fine pro pros pect, one of Gonzaga's best ever totals, 353, and Wilson the best point average at 16.4 per game. The team's consistently fine team play was illustrated by the fact that ten players aver aged between 4.5 and 16.4 points per game. The Bulldogs, who now belong to the Big Sky Conference, con tinued their amazing home court excellence this year with an 8-2 performance. They now have won 17 out of 20 Coliseum games in the past two seasons.

Coach Marion Pericin's 1962-63 Zag Junior Varsity basketball team compiled an impressive 20-6 record. The quintet was undefeated with freshmen Billy Suter—an ex-Washington prep all-stater from Morton, Wash.—and Mike McChesney, from Seattle, in the lineup through the early part of the season. Suter and McChesney both proved to be so outstanding that they were grabbed by varsity mentor Anderson. Both proved this belief cor rect as they seemed to add hustle and spark to the other varsity players. After these two sparkling future Zag stars left the junior varsity, a couple of tall men took over the team rebounding and scoring load. They were 6-5 Chuck Concannon, a sophomore from Portland, and 6-4 Jed Steele, a freshman from San Francisco. Coach Pericin, who played his collegiate basketball at Gonzaga under Hank Anderson, praised his team for its hard work throughout the sea son, despite the loss of Suter and McChesney and a definite lack of speed.

Don't be misled, Two serious injuries, academic problems and a though, for such was not the case. They were at full coach who doubles as publicist for the professional strength only once or twice and went into combat Spokane Comets of the Western Hockey League, most of the time with but 10 or II players suited is quite emphatic in his praise of this year's sextet up. as the best Gonzaga team since a generation ago Forwards Murray Paterson and Tom Hufty suf when Zag hockey was nationally renowned. fered a broken collarbone and broken wrist, respec "There's no doubt about it," Bill said, "that this tively, and were lost for most of the season. 102 Thus, it is rather apparent that McLoughlin's crew was shorthanded much of the time against top-flight opposition. The Spokane gang failed to beat Trail in eight starts, an overtime one-goal loss in Trail being the closest it came. It was three wins and five losses at the hands of third- place Notre Dame and two and five against runner-up Cranbrook. All was not bleak. Wingman Al Pasqualotto won his second team- scoring crown in three years. Husky Al averaged exactly one goal per game and chipped in 17 assists for a 40-point total. That was 12 points better than Gerry Mussio's 28, good for second honors. Both hail from Trail, B.C. The "shining light" among the Zag icemen had to be goalie Jim Malott, another Trail product. Malott watched more than 1,000 shots come blistering at him from all angles but he turned back an amazing 85.7 per cent of them. This prompted his skipper to classify him as a professional prospect.

Jim Molott, Goalie.

Jimmy has practiced about 15 times with the pro Comets and says he has learned a lot just from watching star netminder Claude Dufour. "I learned more of a standup style from Claude, and every player on the Comet team has a good shot, which helped me," said the well-built, 5-10 youngster. Both Malott and defenseman George (Butch) Webb, of Cranbrook, B.C. (Cranbrook's captain before migrating to GU) were named to the Koo tenai International League's second team this sea son. Malott missed the first team by one vote. Skipper Bill says he looks for II or 15 players to return next season. Pasqualotto, Harstead and Len O'Byrne, who set a club penalty-minute record this year with 65, will be lost, but McLoughlin hopes to have five more good imports from Can ada to help replace them a year hence. "With help we'll have our best team next year," Bill said hopefully. "So I'd say we'll definitely be contenders next season,' he concluded. 107 Baseball Coach Dick Busch had 10 lettermen return for the 1963 season, which was to be the school's longest in history—29 games. At this writing, the team had just returned from the Banana Belt tourney in Lewiston, Idaho. It lost four consecutive games to Idaho, Washington State, Columbia Basin Junior College and Montana State University. The hitting appeared good but the pitching and fielding was weak. "Pitching will be the key to our season," said Busch before the season opened with the Banana Belt tournament. He was thinking mostly about the loss of Rich Beck via graduation. Beck was the team's leading pitcher for two years and he is now in professional baseball with the Philadelphia Phils' organization. The infield and outfield strength appeared to be improved from 1962, especially defensively.

Lettermen Johnny Rea and Paul Web er and Boise JC-transfer Gary Round- tree anchored the pitching staff along with veteran Bill Dobner, a converted first baseman. Coach Busch was looking for his first winning season since the school's all- time best record of 20 wins and only three losses in 1958. Grand Rapids, Mich. 195 This is the momentwe have long waited for.The SPIRES, 1963, is done at last. What does it represent? Certainly more than a cover and its pages. It is an adventure into human activity. The copy is individual" it cannot hope to include the sentiments of all-'it can only strive to express the thoughts of the majority. This year has been a difficult one for the SPIRES of Gonzaga. At times, seemingly unsurmountable difficulties presented themselves. Many staffs would have given up all hope—but a handful of Gonzaga students were determined, often rather reluctantly, to accomplish their goal. To these students we editors owe our thanks. Not only did our few staff members do everything they possibly could do to aid in the publishing of this book, but other students and members of the faculty gave up long hours of their time to aid in the production of SPIRES, 1963. To Kay Grant, who wrote the introduction; to Jack Hamlin, who spent many hours writing the sports copy; to Ross Boehm, for the picture of the spires at sunset; to John Heffernan, who drew the cover from an idea taken from the mosaic designed by Louis St. Marie, S. ]., and Mr. Ingalls; to Father Yeats, for the aerial view of the campus which appears on the endsheets; to the SPOKESMAN REVIEW and to Dan Avey, who contributed most of the sports pictures; and to countless other individuals who gave their time to make the end product of SPIRES, 1963, that much easier for the editors to produce; many thanks. We would especially like to thank those students not on our staff who pulled through for us at the frantic last deadline. To Jim Harkins and Al Zalewski we would like to say that their help the night before the final deadline was very much appreciated, to say nothing of the help their words of encouragement gave to the editors throughout the year. To Sharon Battle and Helen Downey who helped us out before the final deadline and who spent hours cleaning up the ruin that we called the SPIRES office while we went

194 downto Pasco to deliver our final deadline,we can't adequately express our thanks. And to John Battilega, John Villaume, Larry Miller, Jerry Mooney, and the rest of the people upstairs in the ASGU offices who spent literally day and night trying to pull the SPIRES through chaos after chaos we give our thanks. And to our roommates and friends who put up with our unceasing complaining during the year and who patted us on the back occasionally, dried our tears, and told us to keep our chins up, we will always be grateful. Without these and many other people whom we do not have the room to name, SPIRES, 1963, would hardly have been and we shall always appreciate their efforts. As we look back now we see a few areas that could have been better. It is through error that we learn and improve and this is the way in which a foundation will be set—though it may take years and never be fully realized. At the time of this writing the future of the SPIRES is uncertain. Perhaps this closing note shall be' come a requiem for the SPIRES. We certainly hope not. We firmly believe that a yearbook is essential to a school. We hope that you, too, feel that SPIRES, 1963, is an integral part of Gonzaga University and that fifty years from now you will still derive pleasure from looking through the pages. We know that we are proud of this year's book, and we hope that you will be proud of it. The staff is now finished with SPIRES, 1963, The result is in your hands. Whether you praise it or condemn it matters not. Our desire is for you to enjoy it.
