CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER’S MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR VOLUNTEERS JUNE 2018 Introduction 1. It has been another very busy month, with a huge amount of activity, as you will read below. Chapter 2. Chapter met on 12 June. There was a discussion about the strategy going forward, and the same small group that developed the Cathedral vision document will now be working on the process for updating the Strategic Development Plan. The resources that are identified as being required to deliver the plan will be built into the 2019 budget. Meanwhile, Chapter has given approval to recruit a person to help with administration and a person to help with visitor engagement and outreach whilst the new structures are being determined. 3. Chapter also authorised the commissioning of a survey of the acoustic, to determine whether there is any way the effects can be ameliorated temporarily for the kind of music that the choral societies etc wish to perform. Bell Ringers 4. Each year the bell ringers enter a team for the National 12-Bell Striking Contest. Having qualified in an eliminator contest at Southwell Minster in March, on Saturday 23rd June they took part in the final at the University Church of Great St Mary in Cambridge They were up against nine other teams, from Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Exeter, Leeds, Melbourne (Derbyshire), St Paul’s Cathedral and two other London-based teams. The standard of ringing was very high throughout and our team scored a very good 72%. Although this was the lowest score, only 11 percentage points separated teams 3 to 10. The contest was won by Birmingham, with the Cambridge team coming a close second on their own bells. In addition to the participants, a great many other ringers attended to listen to the ringing and enjoy one of the great ringing occasions of the year in perfect weather. The Cathedral looks forward to holding the contest here at the Cathedral in 2021. Education 5. School Leavers services took place in the last week of June, and were a great success. Louise is currently planning November school events, which will be very busy. The WW1 centenary workshops were advertised this month and fully booked by today – the Cathedral will welcome over 400 KS2 children across the four days. This event has received sponsorship and schools have contributed a small amount towards the cost, the main cost will be a drama performance by Footprints Theatre Trust. Advent workshops, aimed at KS1, are generating some interest, with one of the six days on offer already fully booked. The God And The Big Bang event on 4 July and summer holiday family fun activities are also being planned. Enterprise 6. Caroline Simcox leaves the Cathedral after eight years at the end of June. She has generated £800,000 in income in that time, and her energy and outstanding professionalism will be sorely missed. During June the team delivered a Pre-Loved clothing sale, the last abseil of the season, the Young Enterprise Regional Finals, a concert by Guildford Choral, and a very successful reception in the Nave for Wilkins Kennedy (solicitors). Facilities 7. The work to restore and improve the Green (kindly funded by the Friends) is underway and is going well. The DEC is now in the hands of the University and they are beginning refurbishment work to prepare for occupation in time for the new academic year. Fundraising 8. Susan secured £1700 from the Worshipful Company of Girdlers, which will be used for the WWI education project in November. £2000 has been raised from the Borrows Trust for our Coffee Concerts. There were events to thank major donors to the organ appeal (huge thanks to Richard for his help with making these such successes). An application has gone in to Williams Church Music to fund the organ scholar’s expenses. A positive conversation was been held with the Worshipful Company of Mercers about the possibility of them funding the Head of Schools and Family Learning post. One of the First World War silhouettes – funded by the Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment Combined Charities - is now in the Regimental Chapel until November. Guildford Cathedral 2020 - Creating Guildford’s Cathedral Quarter 9. It has been announced that the Cathedral is working with VIVID Homes to build a small housing development on Stag Hill. VIVID is Hampshire’s largest provider of affordable homes with around 70,000 customers and 30,000 homes in the South East, mainly across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire. VIVID has around 850 staff including their own repairs team. The Dean has been interviewed by the Surrey Advertiser, see the first link below. There was an interview with the BBC on Monday 11 June (see second link below, begins at 1h 07 min), and there has also been an article in the Guildford Dragon (third link). https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/guildford-cathedral-revisit-stag-hill- 14748322 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p068m5fq http://www.guildford-dragon.com/2018/06/12/residents-fears-as-guildford-cathedral- announces-revision-of-plan-to-build-homes-on-stag-hill/ Music and Liturgy 10. The choir undertook a trip into the Diocese to sing Evensong at St. Mary’s Worplesdon on 24 June, and are planning a trip to the Chapel Royal St. James Palace on Sunday 8 July to sing Mattins at 11.15 am when the Queen’s Chaplain, Canon Dr. Nicholas Thistlethwaite, will preach. There was a successful hand bell ringing service on 23 June, and Surrey Joint Services Charity Service on 24 June. On 30 June and 1 July the Ordination Services take place. Virgers 11. It has been another hugely busy month and our thanks are due to the Virgers for their sterling efforts on our behalf as usual. Please see the votes of thanks below received after the Guildford Choral Society concert on 16 June, and the hand bell service on 23 June. “Following our very successful concert at the Cathedral last night, I feel compelled to publicly thank Virger Paul and his team for all their Herculean efforts to support me yesterday. Their support was exceptional in preparing the performance space as always but they went the extra mile in accommodating a large influx of late ticket sales and for this in particular, I am so grateful. If there are any staff rewards available to them, I would highly recommend that they receive these for exceptional service and for being wonderful cathedral ambassadors!” “Thank you all so much for another successful event on Saturday. I have received many positive comments, particularly regarding the change of the date from autumn to summer. We were also fortunate to have such a sunny day that didn't clash with an England game! Your help with arranging the space, the acoustics for the readers (the guidance notes for this were very helpful) and all the preparation beforehand, goes a long way towards making the day run so smoothly.” .
