KING'S COLLEGE HOSPITAL, - 1953 Our scene is set inside King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill in SE London, which was opened in its present location by King George V and Queen Mary in 1913. During WWII, the hospital served as a casualty clearing station for victims of air raids, and the building was lucky to have escaped with only minor bomb damage. In 1948, King's joined the new National Health Service as a teaching hospital and over the years has helped shape the work of many notable medical alumni, including the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize for Medicine winner, James W Black. In this photograph, kindly supplied by the King's College Archives, we see third year nurses in a 1950s bedmaking class.
