LETTERFROMTHEATHLETICDIRECTOR

While it may seem hard to believe, the 2009-10 campaign marked the University’s fifth season in the highly competitive BIG EAST Conference. This year continued Marquette’s established trend in the powerful league as the program collected multiple team and individual accomplishments over the course of the school year.

Team success was highlighted by a trio of postseason appearances by the men’s , women’s soccer and women’s basketball squads. The men’s basketball team claimed its fifth straight 20-win campaign and also advanced to the NCAATournament for the fifth consecutive year. Women’s soccer continued its impressive performance capturing the conference’s American Division title and the program’s eighth all-time NCAA selection. The women’s basketball team again claimed a spot in the Women’s National InvitationTournament.

Just as impressive as the team accolades were the individual accomplishments of numerous student- athletes in a variety of sports. Senior forward Lazar Hayward finished among Marquette’s career leaders in seven categories, including second in points (1,859) and fifth in rebounds (910). Dusan Medan of the men’s tennis team set the school’s all-time record with 88 singles victories and classmate Mark Rutherford did the same thing in doubles (103). Head women’s tennis coach Jody Bronson, who completed her 25th season at Marquette, collected her 300th career victory early in the dual match season and is the all-time wins leader in any sport at Marquette.

In the classroom, three programs (men’s golf, women’s soccer and women’s tennis) were nationally recognized by the NCAA for their multi-year Academic Progress Rate success. Of the 42 student-athletes to complete their respective eligibility in 2009-10, 27 earned Academic All-BIG EAST accolades on at least one occasion and 11 owned cumulative GPA’s of 3.5 or better.

Each of the 14 athletic programs participated in community service projects throughout the year, working in concert with the University’s mission. Notable efforts included work by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee with the Children’s Medical Research Foundation. Multiple teams took part in the University’s Hunger Clean-Up event, one of the nation’s largest one-day service projects. Other activities included organizing book drives, hosting clinics and conducting reading programs.

2010 marked the second year for the Intercollegiate Athletics Alumni Awards (details on page 8) and this year’s recipients were recognized for their many contributions to the University and community. Five awards were distributed as part of the University’s Alumni Awards weekend in April.

Marquette student-athletes, coaches and staff continue to work hard daily to fulfill our mission of striving for excellence in athletics, academics and leadership in service to others in the Jesuit tradition.Thank you for your passionate support.

Go Marquette!
