“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.” —I Corinthians 13:11

Welcome to the fantasy world of “Peter Pan” at LifeHouse Theater!

Our 27th season continues today with a musical inspired by the work of James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937). At age six, his older brother David— known as his mother’s favorite—died just before his 14th birthday in an ice skating accident. His mother found comfort in thinking that her lost boy would remain a boy forever, never to grow up and leave her. Barrie, meanwhile, wore David’s clothes and whistled the way his brother did as a way of consoling her.

One can discern the origins of “Peter Pan” rooted in Barrie’s childhood experience. He considered the ministry for a time but instead chose his renown literary career. Several of his works explore issues related to youth. In “Peter Pan,” Wendy grapples with a fear of “growing up,” a desire to remain youthful and a need to be guided toward making wise and mature choices. In other words, she is confronted with issues most all of us face.

On one hand, we eagerly look forward to the perceived freedoms and joys that presumably come with a driver’s license, graduation, first job and the like. On the other hand, as we grow older, it’s easy to replay the past with the benefit of our current perspective and second-guess ourselves with critical analysis. As with so many aspects of our life’s journey, perhaps the truth is in the tension—in finding the balance between youth and maturity.

There’s nothing wrong with being young or “young at heart.” As Paul wrote Timothy, “Let no one despise you for your youth…” But he also advises, whether we are young or old, to “set an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity” (I Timothy 4:12). These are words to live by as we all grow older and, hopefully, wiser…

Be sure to join us next for the powerful true story of "Moses." Money saving passes are on sale now.
