CHECK OUT THE NEW GOLD COAST MOBILE LIBRARY AT THE TRAIN STATION! The Gold Coast Public Library is always looking for new ways to provide services to community residents, even after hours when the Library building has closed for the day. The library is pleased to announce that it has opened a Grab-n-Go Mobile Library located at the Glen Head Railroad Station.

Thanks to the carpentry skills of the scouts in Cub Scout Pack 278, as well as the sup- port of Troop 195, Troop 43, and the Theodore Roosevelt Scout Council, residents can now select a book at any time of day from the library’s adult, young adult and children’s excessed book collections.

“The Board of Trustees and I are extremely grateful to all the Cub Scouts for generously donating their time and carpentry skills to create this mobile library for our patrons and community residents,” Library Director Mike Morea said. "I would also like to thank Ron Kessler and the Long Island Railroad for working with us on this project. ”

The new mobile library is unlocked and residents can select a book to read and share without having to return it to the Library. Next time you are at the Glen Head Railroad Station, be sure to grab a book to read on the ride.

Gold Coast Memories Glen Head's Hessian Regiment On August 27, 1776, the British army defeated the American rebels in the Battle of Brooklyn; the British then held Long Island throughout the remain- der of the Revolutionary War. Dozens of regiments were stationed through- out the island, many housed in abandoned homes. The Hessians had been hired by the British to help fi ght during the Ameri- can Revolution. Most of them came from the German state of Hesse-Cassel. There were only two major Hessian encampments in the colonies; one in Newark, New Jersey, the other in Glen Head. The thoroughfare known as Cedar Swamp Road was built more than 300 years ago as a path for horses and carriages. George Washington traveled the road as the Commander-in-Chief of the rebel army. Just above that road, the Hessian troop encampment kept an eye on the movements of Washington and his troops. Some of the Hessians who died there, either in violent skirmishes or during a smallpox outbreak, are buried in unmarked graves in East Hill Cemetery (see the May/June 2021 Library Newsletter), not far from where they had made camp. Of the number of Hessians who survived the war, half returned to Germany and the remainder deserted and made The New World their home. 11
