Welcome to the Tennis & Racquet Club, host of the 2015 U.S. Open Singles and Doubles Championships. The U.S. Open is the United States Court Tennis Association’s (USCTA) premier tennis competition of the year and we are honored to be the host club. On behalf of the U.S. Open Committee, and the Board of Governors, staff, and members of the Club, I’d like to welcome you to the T&R and to Boston.

The Club last hosted the Open 10 years ago in 2005. Though the Boston court looks as she did for the last Open held here, a lot has happened between then and now, and a lot of work has gone into making her capable of hosting such a wonderful event for an elite group of players. This year’s field of contestants is an especially strong one and I look forward to ten days of exciting, world caliber tennis.

Many thanks to the Club members, corporate sponsors, and enthusiasts of tennis who have contributed both their time and financial resources to this year’s Open. The T&R is grateful to the USCTA for its support of this tournament and of the game of court tennis in the United States. Thanks to that support the game is thriving and growing, with the court in Chicago returning to its original form, and significant progress being made toward building a new court in Charleston, South Carolina. And hearty thanks are also due to those who have opened up their homes to the visiting professionals and amateurs.

As many know, the Open requires a great deal of planning, energy, fundraising, enthusiasm, and hard work. Without the work of the U.S. Open Committee and others, this 10- day period at the T&R would not be possible. Thanks also go to Club Manager Tom Dobbins, Club Finance Manager Janice Pearson, Head Professional Tony Hollins, and other Club staff whose efforts have brought us to today.

I hope you enjoy the Open!

Court Tennis (also known as Real Tennis, Royal Tennis, or Jeu de Paume) can be traced back at least to the 12th century, when it originally was played as a street game. By the 17th century there were thousands of courts (as we know them today) throughout Europe. The first American court was built in Boston in 1876. Court Tennis is the predecessor to the (now ubiquitous) game of Lawn Tennis, a game invented so that—in part—the ladies could enjoy the sport. Today, members of both sexes enjoy both sports.

Each court has its own distinguishing characteristics, depending upon where and when it was built. The balls are hand-made by the professionals and are kept in sets of up to 72 for any given court. The racquets are wooden, heavy, and skewed in a way to aid “cutting” the ball and “digging” shots out of corners.

Scoring is complex and requires more strategy than most racquet sports. In addition to the basic idea of winning points, it is very important in court tennis to control the service end (players often switch ends during a game). There is a clear and obvious advantage to serving as opposed to receiving in this game.

“The Chase”: Chases can occur on either the service or hazard end and are measured by the yardage marks on the court. A chase is made (by “Player A”) when the ball bounces twice before it is touched (by “Player B”), and is marked on the 2nd bounce and becomes a point to be finished later. When players achieve 2 chases (or if there is a chase and a game point) they switch ends. Now, “Player B” has to achieve a chase better than the one “Player A” had made. For example, if “A’s” chase was 4 yards, then to win the point “B” must make a shot so that either: “A” hits into the net or out of court; or: a) “A” misses the ball and b) the second bounce lands closer to the back wall than 4 yards. Simple, eh?!

Today there are 44 courts in use, and the U.S. has ten active courts at nine locations. There are also three disused courts in this country—Myopia Hunt Club, Harvard University, and Greentree in Manhasset, NY. Altogether, 19 Courts were built in America, although never were all in use at the same time.
