    1 Love Letters of Virginia Mowry and Theodore Barber, Fall 1925 Forward by Jeffrey La Favre, grandson of Virginia and Theodore [revised March 29, 2019] It is a deep regret of mine that my grandfather, Theodore Underhill Barber, did not live long enough for me to know him (4 May 1885 - 4 April 1952). He died when I was two and a half years old. His life was one of many impressive accomplishments and of adversities overcome. His childhood was spent in Brooklyn, New York, and he was educated at the Pratt Institute. His father had a stroke at a young age and Theodore had to quit school to help earn money for the family. He worked at a bank in New York as office boy for the bank president, rising to the position of head teller at a young age. In these letters we learn that that bank was New York Trust Co. Theodore married Adelaide Searing Valentine on November 15, 1907 while still living in New York. Their only child, Ruth Underhill Barber, was born October 7, 1908. Adelaide’s parents moved to Altadena, California, sometime between 1905 and 1910, leaving Florence (Adelaide’s older sister) and Adelaide in Brooklyn. Letters were written home to Brooklyn about the wonderful life in Altadena. Theodore’s position at the bank was causing him stress, which had manifested in physical ways. These events led to his decision to move to California to pursue a better life. There he found he could not obtain a bank position that would pay a living wage.

    Volunteering in Cape Town, South Africa Day One: I’ve Arrived Arrived in Cape Town and was greeted by a man named Yacoob. Took about an hour to get from the airport to the place I'm staying. It's called Saltycrax. It's a place backpackers stop off at for $40 USD a night and it also houses volunteers. You can imagine what it looks like. I met a lady named Nanda and a young man named Yanga. Yanga poured me a shot of Jager and I had a toast with about 4 strangers. Was shown my room which consists of a filthy tile floor, an old wooden armoire, and 2 cots, one with bedding, one without. The stiffness is a close resemblance to that tile floor. My room is in a shared house on the other side of the block, about a 3- minute walk from Saltycrax. There's a security guard in his car on the intersection so he can see both houses but he's only there Thursday-Sunday. I asked if it was safe to walk to the nearby convenience store and was told yes, so long as I go with somebody. Back at Saltycrax there were about 20-25 people at the common bar area, paying 20 Rand or so a beer. Or about $1 USD. I met people from Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Netherlands, but not one American here. But somehow they're all giving me shit about Trump. I was made a plate of food filled with rice, chicken, and some vegetables. Also caught myself munching on dried tree leaves that made their way into the meal as well as a ton of bones, large and thin.

    The Teaching of English at Basic Education in the State of Hidalgo: A Case Study Bertha Guadalupe Paredes Zepeda Jovanna Matilde Godínez Martínez Hilda Hidalgo Avilés Norma Angélica Espinosa Butrón1 Marisela Dzul Escamilla (Collaboration) The Secretary of Public Education in Mexico has made several attempts to implement the teaching of English in public primary schools. However, the programs that have been carried out have not reached the desired results. One possible reason for this could be the lack of educational and organized planning to guarantee the appropriateness and feasibility of a project (DíazBarriga F, 2003). The present study led by the University of Sonora is part of a longitudinal study initiated at the end of 2011. The main objective of this study wasto understand the state of the art of English teaching in public schools at basic education level in Mexico. Researchers from the Universities of Baja California, Durango, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Tlaxcala, Guadalajara and Hidalgo participated in this project. In this chapter, information gathered from the program PNIEB in the state of Hidalgo in 2012 and recently updated data is reported. Classroom observations and interviews were carried out for collecting data; the state was divided into three main regions: Sierra Baja and Alta, Valle del Mezquital and Comarca Minera in order to obtain a representative sample of what occurs within the state. The Genetic History Of The Otomi In The Central Mexican Valley Abstract The Otomí, or Hñäñhü, is an indigenous ethnic group in the Central Mexican Valley that has been historically marginalized since before Spanish colonization. To investigate the extent by which historical, geographic, linguistic, and cultural influences shaped biological ancestry, I analyzed the genetic variation of 224 Otomí individuals residing in thirteen Otomí villages. Results indicate that the majority of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes belong to the four major founding lineages, A2, B2, C1, and D1, reflecting an overwhelming lack of maternal admixture with Spanish colonizers. Results also indicate that at an intra-population level, neither geography nor linguistics played a prominent role in shaping maternal biological ancestry. However, at an inter-population level, geography was found to be a more influential determinant. Comparisons of Otomí genetic variation allow us to reconstruct the ethnic history of this group, and to place it within a broader-based Mesoamerican history.     Sistemas de riego en Ixmiquilpan, Tetepango y Tula, siglos xvii-xix Verenice Cipatli Ramírez Calva* UNIVERSIDAD AuTÓNOMA DEL ESTADO DE HIDALGO El presente artículo tiene como objetivo central analizar las pugnas y acuerdos por el uso, control y acceso al agua, surgidos entre elites regionales y pueblos de indios de las jurisdicciones de Tetepango, Ixmiquilpan y Tula en los siglos xviii al xix. Estos procesos claramente tienen sus raíces en la nueva conforma- ción económica. Entre finales del siglo xvii y principios de la centuria siguien- te, la economía regional viró hacia el cultivo de granos, pero sin dejar de lado la cría de ganado destinado a la arriería y la matanza. [email protected] Resumen Desde el siglo XVI la jurisdicción de Huichapan, anexa a la provincia de Xilotepec, se constituyó en una región productora de ganados mayores y, en menor medida, de maíz y trigo a diferencia de sus vecinas Ixmiquilpan y Tula en las que la principal producción se orientó a la cría de ovejas. Su posición estratégica en la red de caminos que comunicaban las minas de Pachuca con las de Ixmiquilpan y Zimapán, y a su vez con el Valle de México, el altiplano queretano, el bajío michoacano y guanajuatense la hicieron un punto por donde transitaban comerciantes y trajinantes de las zonas aledañas, pero igualmente su ubicación y giro productivo la llevaron a ser un comercializador de carne en la ciudad de México y semillas en Michoacán.
