Pastor’s Points of Perspective. Hello my dear brothers and sisters of Saint Christopher’s Parish Family. This weekend we welcome Father Anthony Sebamalai to preach our annual mission appeal in support of the Archdiocese of Detroit’s assistance to the Society of The Propagation of the Faith for missions throughout the world. Father Anthony is from the of Mannar, Sri Lanka, which, has experienced thirty years of civil war in the region.

Questions from our Parish Family. Question #30. Why did Pope Paul VI give an indult to the United States approving the liturgical abuse of communion in the hand, knowing it would reduce the belief in transubstantiation, and ensure profanation? This question itself may be confusing to the general population who is not aware that receiving Holy Communion in the hand, while currently permitted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, is still against the universal norm of the Church to receive on the tongue, and prior to 1969, receiving Holy Communion in the hand was considered to be a “liturgical abuse” of the Eucharist, which was occurring in several countries for several years prior. I am unsure if Pope Paul VI knew communion in the hand would reduce the belief in transubstantiation and ensure profanation of the Eucharist; this would seem obvious, but is likely a matter of deep historical research – after all, I do not know what the Pope understood at the time of his decision. What is clear, however, is that Pope Paul VI did approve the indult (permission) for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops per their request to allow each to permit receiving Holy Communion in the hand against the universal norm of receiving Holy Communion on the tongue. So, it is still up to each diocesan Bishop to permit Holy Communion in the hand for his diocese or forbid it.

Several years before this permission was granted, several conferences of bishops throughout the world were requesting this permission to receive Holy Communion in the hand since, again, it was already being done without permission in certain countries. The indult (permission) would remove the “liturgical abuse” formally, juridically, but not in practice, and thus save many people from the sin of profaning the Eucharist, which is a sin that can only be forgiven by a bishop, unless that has been given to priests. Therefore, my educated guess would be that these reasons aforementioned was why Pope Paul VI gave the indult, for pastoral concern. In addition, along with the permission to receive Holy Communion in the hand, was supposed to be a thorough catechesis to the faithful so that extreme reverence for the Eucharist and excessive caution for the protection of any particles falling to the ground to avoid profanation must be observed, but bishops who have allowed the exception of receiving Holy Communion in the hand to be the norm have not insured this catechesis in their . Thus, we have today’s casual, lackadaisical attitude towards the Eucharist for many resulting in irreverence and disbelief of the Eucharist as the real, living, breathing, beating heart of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Bishops should have ensured the thorough catechesis called for by Pope Pius VI wherever the indult was Page 2 St. Christopher, Marysville
