Cassettes get played in the car an awful lot, cutting down on radio listening. Does this mean cassettes are the future, or is this the audience reacting to the current state of radio? Any answers or thoughts out there?"

Record Action

MICHAEL PLEN, I.R.S. (212-826-0477): "The Go Go's went 20-18 on the Hard Retail Index last week! I don't know what will happen this week but look to find out anyway. More than likely it will go up. Remember, that list is made up of the 20 top markets and the bands they're surrounded by ain't chopped liver either... Alternative T.V.: Check out 'Ancient Rebels', British pop at its best...Wall Of Voodoo, synthesized rock and roll. Listen to 'Good Times' and 'Full Of Tension'...The Payola$--Vancouver rock. Notice that a lot of bands from Vancouver are being played on the radio today like Red Rider, Bryan Adams, Chilliwack--why not play the Payola$? C'mon, have you really listened? Try 'In A Place Like This', 'I'm Sorry' and 'Too Shy To Dance'...Coming soon: Suburban Lawns, Rennaissance. (Yes, the band that used to be on Sire. Rennaissance was pretty much of a low-key group whose classical input was way ahead of its time); the Humans. All will be out in October...Coming soon on Faulty Products: Alley Cats, the Human Switchboard and Donald Kinsey, Peter Tosh's guitarist...Today starts my new section called 'Vejur Destruction'. Just like radio people used to blow up disco and New Wave records on the air, I'm starting a thing where I'm blowing up Program and Music Directors because they don't fit the format. ThisweeksVejur Blowup is radio personality Ed Levine-- kaboomilmill" JUDY LIBOW, ATLANTIC (212-484-6063): "Foreigner's '81-82 tour kicked off in Cape Cod, MA this past week and if the frenzy of their first U.S. audience is any indication of what can be expected around the country-- Watch out!! There will be some surprises along the way, including the added musicianship of Mark Rivera, Bob Mayo and Peter Reilich who are traveling and performing with the band. You can expect the new single to be released shortly and 'Waiting For A Girl Like You' is well worth the wait. (So is the new mix!). Don't miss the show! Just watch where you're walking!...On the—iiaio: The new single and 12" from Genesis entitled 'No Replay At All'. It's contagious, sparkling, and a damn good record! I don't think any 'proof' of legitimacy is necessary for that kind of sound. It speaks for itself--and we've been there before... Also on the way: Mink DeVille's new single 'You Better Move On' with the track 'Just Give Me One Good Reason' on the B side of the 12". This forthcoming Lp will be an '81 classic. (I'll go on record with that statement)...Kix continues to break new ground coast to coast! 'The Itch' is getting phones where it's getting played. What are you waiting for?...Rose Tattoo (featuring the blistering talents of Angry Anderson) is just being released. Production credits go to the notable team of Vanda and Young. Check your mail for this one...More records: John Entwistle's incredible solo effort featuring the talents of and (Talk Dirty' is a definite standout); the new and different Gary Numan; Alvin Lee's second effort entitled 'RX5'. Think we've got some product???It's awesome!...0ther great stuff: The Police, the Police, the Police...Currently preparing for the Fire Island onslaught and collecting my winnings on the Hearns/ Sugar Ray bout. (At last, Bill, we agree on something!)" BILL McGATHY, RCA (212-920-4095): "Five albums charted in the Hard Sheet! I've died and gone to heaven! The RCA album team has come a long way in the last year. Our product is better, the airplay is better and the follow-through is great! We are breaking groups again at the home of the Nipper...Coming this week Charlie's 'Good Morning America', possibly the best installment in a series of wonderful albums. Please audition 'Good Morning America' and 'Roll The Dice'. Also on its way to you in September, the second Lp from Jack Green called 'Reverse Logic'which is even better than the first...Also a new one from Bruce Cockburn titled 'Inner City Fron .C;Lp's from Bow Wow Wow, Polyrock and Kiki Dee." JIMMY DEL BALZO, POLYDOR (213-277-1367): "I can't remember there ever being as much quality product on the streets as there is right now. It would be enough to devastate the average new band! Fortunately, Novo Combo is far from an average band and the quality of their debut album has allowed them to keep growing while many other records have faded out of sight. Unfortunately there are still quite a few people who admit to being crazy about the record but are still not playing it. To these folks I say, let your instincts be your guide. If you love the record, your listeners may also get excited about it. Put it on-the-air and you'll see...Thanks to Phil Strider, Dave Lange, Larry Bruce, and Bob Buchman for being among the newcomers to the party. Special thanks to all the folks who were there in the beginning and especially to John DeBella and the staff at WLIR who made Novo Combo Screamer Of The Week. Make sure you catch the band when they appear on 'Solid Gold' performing 'Up Periscope' the first week in October...By now you should already be wearing your Martin Briley berets. Tommy Nast has found it goes extremely well with his whips, but then again we all know about Tom! Make sure you listen to 'The Man I Feel' from Martin...Def Leppard is knocking young rock and rollers on their tush with their live show. These kids are a class rock and roll act and definitely not of the 'dumb rock' variety that several people have bunched them in with. Seeing is believing...You should already have your Benny Mardones advance cassette. The music speaks for itself... Welcome back to Rob Lipshutz...Congrats to Charlie Kendall and Lisa Richards and Mr. and Mrs. Bittens, as well as my good friend Bob Waugh and his new wife...Question of the week: What Northeastern Program Director will be the next one to bite the dust?...Finally, I can't believe that CBS is having to struggle to get airplay on Bob Dylan. Album radio should re-evaluate their opinions of what their audience wants to hear. Good luck to Messrs. Rappaport, and McKeon."
