Open Letter to all Parents & Teachers from Faith Barr (author/composer/teacher):

Has someone in your family expressed an interest in learning to play music? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn to play an instrument yourself? You may have found it difficult or impossible to find a good teacher and/or the cost of lessons and transportation on a weekly basis to be prohibitive. Maybe you purchased music instruction books in the past and found them to be ineffective. If you can relate to any of those statements, you’ve come to the right place!

The “Learn to Play” series was developed especially for homeschool families to learn to play music at home — even if no one in the family had previous musical training. Each page of music is clear and understandable. There is a com- prehensive “Teaching Manual”. And NOW there are more than 1,500 step-by-step videos and live interactive online classes to make it even easier for your family to learn to play in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Is it expensive? Absolutely not! Our mission is to give every student & family the opportunity to learn to play mu- sic together. ALL our online classes & more than 1,500 instructional videos are available to you for only $19.95 per month —for the entire family! —NOT per person! What if everyone in your family (Mom, Dad, and Grandma, too) wants to learn to play all 15 instruments? It’s still only $19.95! Is there a long-term commitment? No, it’s just month by month; you can stop at any time. (If you wish, you can pay for a year at a time and receive 2 months free.) You can also add or subtract students and/or instruments at any time. No additional charge. What if you have a question that isn’t answered in the books, classes or videos? Just call us or email us. We want you to be successful, so your teacher is always available to help.

What makes the Learn to Play series different? We use the “easy reader” concept. That’s why we produced this series of more than 650 music books. As music teachers for many years, we could never find enough easy music for students to become proficient at reading and playing. All the instructional methods available moved too quickly, con- stantly introducing new notes & musical concepts with hardly any songs to play. Students ended up playing the same few songs over and over, without ever getting comfortable at reading music, making each new page difficult to mas- ter. Many students became discouraged and quit, thinking that it was their fault, that they were somehow not “talented” musically or that learning to read music was too difficult. Perhaps you had a similar experience. For us as teachers, it was like trying to teach someone to read the English language with 1 or 2 easy readers. That’s not enough for a student to become a good reader; as a result, the student won’t enjoy reading and won’t be motivated to read more books. However, if you give that student lots of easy readers, each one slightly more challenging than the last, the student will gradually become an excellent reader and will love to read.

It’s the same way with music. If you give a beginner lots and lots of easy music to play, that student will easily and painlessly become an excellent music reader, will love to play, and continue playing for the rest of his/her life. The Learn to Play method does exactly that. For example, while learning to play the first 3 notes, students will practice nearly 30 songs — just on those first 3 notes! They will become proficient playing those 3 notes before it’s time to learn 3 more new notes. Because of that, even small children can do very well with the Learn to Play series. And, at the same time, there are so many beautiful melodies to play, even older children and adults never get bored. There’s such a nice variety of music: folk songs & fiddle tunes from America and around the world, children’s songs (& nursery rhymes), cute, funny little songs about animals, and even easy classical music — all playable in the very first level! A well-rounded out musical course, music history & composer biographies are included, along with all the verses and chord symbols for singing and accompaniment.

Another feature that makes the Learn to Play series different is that all the music for all the different instru- ments matches. This means that even if everyone in your family is learning to play a different instrument, you can all play together! All the folk songs match, the fiddle tunes match, the children’s songs match, etc.

How do the “live” classes and videos work? We do all the classes “live” every week (using GoToMeeting), so that we can actually see the students (if they choose to share their webcams) and we can interact during the classes. We record all these classes and upload them to our website (usually the same day). So, the live classes and the videos are exactly the same. Using the videos, students can access and replay each class anytime they wish, as often as they want to. This allows each student to progress at his/her own speed. A very young student (ages 3-6, for example) might spend 2-3 weeks or more on one video, perhaps just playing 10-15 minutes of the video at a time; an older child or adult may be able to do 2 or 3 videos per week. The videos also have “pause”, “rewind”, “replay” features, and mul- speeds. For those reasons, most member families choose to use the videos exclusively, rather than the “live” classes. Some use a combination of both.

To get started right away, you need: (1) a computer, tablet, or smart phone, or landline, or DVDs to connect to your classes or videos, (2) music books for the instrument (s) of your choice, either an individual book, Starter Pak, or the Complete Set, and (3) 555 Club lessons/classes/videos: $19.95 for the entire family (+$10 signup fee 1st month only) (4) an instrument to practice. That’s it! Sign up today. See you in class!

If possible, try different sizes to see which is the most comfortable. Important: If in doubt, opt Violin size: To measure, have the student hold out his/her for the smaller of the two sizes. A student can play an left arm toward the front; measure from the base of the instrument that is too small for many years, but it’s neck to the middle of the left palm in inches. Keep in mind, very difficult to play one that’s too big. it’s better for the violin to be too small than too big.

All instruments: If possible, start with the right size instrument. Do not use an over-sized instrument. It’s better to use an instrument that is too small, than one that is too big. If an instrument is too large, it will feel awkward and cumbersome; the student may have difficulty reaching the notes and could easily become discouraged. You also want to obtain the best quality instrument you can afford; while a student can learn on any instrument in working order, better quality instruments sound better and are much easier to play. That being said, you also don’t need the most expensive instrument. The instruments we offer are the best quality at the least price, enabling entire families to learn to play — without breaking the bank!
